Book Time cost Trade off Analysis for Highway Construction Projects

Download or read book Time cost Trade off Analysis for Highway Construction Projects written by Tesfu Oqubagabir Tedla and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The Construction industry, which can be in the form of residential building, commercial, public and utility buildings, or civil engineering building, has a huge influence on any nation’s economy. Its influence can be either manifested in its contribution to the economy or the service it provides to the community. In order to build any infrastructure project with a balanced cost, time, and quality, project managers search for alternatives that can satisfy these contradicting attributes. The traditional time-cost trade-off was enhanced with the three-dimensional time-cost- quality optimization in the last two decades. The optimization is aimed to minimize the time and cost as much as possible while increasing the quality of the infrastructure to be built. The issue of financing in developing countries has been a bottle neck of success in constructing infrastructure like highway. Many researchers have concluded in their studies the causes of time and cost overrun in high-way construction were, contractors’ financial problems, Inflation, progress payments delay by owner, political issues, variations, lack of managemental skills, cost fluctuation of materials during construction, environmental issues, Shortage in equipment, Inadequate contractor experience etc. The number of studies in the literature that deals with financial optimization and cash-flow analysis to address the problem of financing and inflation are getting more attention. The cash-flow analysis and maximum overdraft to be paid give a good indication to the main participants about the trends toward cost and time overrun. They can also help in making a proper decision right at the beginning. The purpose of this study is to deal with the optimization of time and profit of highway constructions taking in to consideration the amount of available credit and future value of the cost of each activity and cash-flow analysis in a comprehensive model. This type of analysis gives the contractor how its profit will be influenced with his allowable credits and the time associated with it. Besides, the model also generates a line of balance scheduling for the project as highways are among the repetitive projects. The cash-flow analysis gives extra information on the overdraft so that it can be optimized to find good combination of execution of the activities which will minimize the overdraft, interest paid to banks and most importantly maximize the profit to be gained by the project using GA approach. This type of analysis also gives alternatives for contractors how much profit would they like to gain by providing different amount of credits. At first the profit and time are optimized individually to get the maximum profit and minimum time for completing the project. Then the multi-objective optimization using goal programing takes place which tries to minimize the deviation from the optimum individual values by assigning importance weight to the individual objectives to find the near optimal solution. The model is tested for different allowable credits and its sensitivity analysis outcomes are plotted to see the relationship between the allowable credits and the profit. To validate the efficiency of the developed model, it is applied to a project from the literature that addresses scheduling and cost optimization of repetitive projects. It is found that the outcome of the model that maximizes the profit and minimizing the time outlooks the results of the literature with 4.65% and 0.38% improvement in duration and cost of the project respectively.

Book Time cost quality Trade off Analysis for Construction Projects

Download or read book Time cost quality Trade off Analysis for Construction Projects written by Mahmoud Mohamed El Bassuony and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The main objective of construction projects is to finish the project according to an available budget, within a planned schedule, and achieving a pre-specified extent of quality. Therefore, time, cost, and quality are considered the most important attributes of construction projects. The purpose of this study is to incorporate quality into the traditional two-dimensional time-cost trade-off (TCT) in order to develop an advanced three-dimensional time-cost-quality trade-off (TCQT) approach. Time, cost, and quality of construction projects are interrelated and have impacts on each other. It is a challenging task to strike a balance among these three conflicting objectives of construction projects since no one solution can be optimal for the three objectives. The overall performance of a project regarding time, cost, and quality is determined by the duration, cost, and quality of its activities. These attributes of each activity depend on the execution option by which the activity’s work is completed. It is required to develop an approach that is capable of finding an optimal or near optimal set of execution options for the project’s activities in order to minimize the project’s total cost and total duration, while its overall quality is maximized. For the aforementioned purpose, three various Microsoft Excel based TCQT models have been developed as follows: • First, a simplified model is developed with the objective of optimizing the total duration, cost, and quality of simple construction projects utilizing the GA-based Excel add in Evolver. • Second, a stochastic model is developed with the objective of optimizing the total duration, cost, and quality of construction projects applying the PERT approach in order to consider uncertainty associated with the performance of execution options and the whole project. • Third, an advanced multi objective optimization model is developed utilizing a self-developed optimization tool having the following capabilities: 1. Selecting an appropriate execution option for each activity within a considered project to optimize the objectives of time, cost, and quality. 2. Considering the discrete nature of duration, cost, and quality of various options for executing each activity. 3. Applying three various optimization approaches, which are the Goal Programming (GP), the Modified Adaptive Weight Approach (MAWA), and the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithms (NSGAII). 4. Analyzing both TCT and TCQT problems. 5. Considering finish-to-finish, start-to-start, and start-to-finish dependency relationships in addition to the traditional finish-to-start relationships among activities. 6. Considering any number of successors and predecessors for activities. 7. User-friendly input and output interfaces to be used for large-scale projects. To validate the developed models and demonstrate their efficiency, they were applied to case studies introduced in literature. Results obtained by the developed models demonstrated their effectiveness and efficiency in analyzing both TCT and TCQT problems.

Book Integrated Cost and Schedule Control for Construction Projects

Download or read book Integrated Cost and Schedule Control for Construction Projects written by Frederick W. Mueller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management and administrative processes within the construction industry have been undergoing major changes in the last several decades. These changes have involved significant adjustments in management science and manage ment techniques, brought about by the need for contemporary valid informa tion with which to manage the construction process. In short, management in the construction industry is changing significantly; change will continue at an accelerated pace at least through the next decade. The responses required of construction industry management are now resulting in a movement away from an entrepreneurial management style to professional management tech niques and procedures. THE COMPELLING ECONOMIC ISSUES The issues forcing these changes are economic. The rising costs of construction and of money are forcing the buyers of construction services to be more demanding. Their demands are for more construction economies, more pro duction, and more productivity than at any time in the past. Nowhere has this been more evident than in the Business Roundtable on construction and in the response of the construction industry to it.· To be successfully responsive, management in the construction industry will be required to use the best project management methods available for cost control, schedule control, and for financial and accounting controls. But responsive professional management can survive and will flourish within this more demanding eco nomic environment.

Book Network Scheduling Techniques for Construction Project Management

Download or read book Network Scheduling Techniques for Construction Project Management written by M. Hajdu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial, financial, commercial or any kinds of project have at least one common feature: the better organized they are, the higher the profit or the lower the cost. Project management is the principle of planning different projects and keeping them on track within time, cost and resource constraints. The need for effective project management is ever-increasing. The complexity of the environment we live in requires more sophisticated methods than it did just a couple of decades ago. Project managers might face insurmountable obstacles in their work if they do not adapt themselves to the changing circumstances. On the other hand, better knowledge of project management can result in better plans, schedules and, last but not least, more contracts and more profit. This knowledge can help individuals and firms to stay alive in this competitive market and, in the global sense, utilize the finite resources of our planet in a more efficient way.

Book Time cost Trade off Problem for Repetitive Activities in Construction Projects

Download or read book Time cost Trade off Problem for Repetitive Activities in Construction Projects written by Daniela Montalvo Senior and published by . This book was released on 2017* with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the principal construction projects objective is to schedule its activities in order to minimize the duration of the project at the lowest possible cost, this is addressed in the time-cost trade-off problem. On the other hand, there is a technique used to schedule construction projects known as Line-of-Balance, which determines the number and size of crews to be employed in each repetitive activity. Existing optimization models are capable of identify, from a set of models, the optimum model for each activity in a repetitive activities project so that the cost is minimized. However this models don't take into account the Line-of-Balance scheduling technique, which is ideal for construction projects. In this order of ideas this paper proposes an optimization model for scheduling project activities holistically, that takes into account multimode activities, the time-cost trade-off problem, and activities constraints to simulate real environments for repetitive activities in construction projects using the Line-of-Balance scheduling technique. The objective is to minimize the overall cost of the project. This optimization model is tested in a concrete bridge case study.
