Book Timber Pests and Diseases

Download or read book Timber Pests and Diseases written by W. P. K. Findlay and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timber Pests and Diseases is an updated version of an earlier work entitled Dry Rot and Other Timber Troubles, which is out of print. The opportunity was taken to revise the text throughout, bringing it up to date and including the results of recent research work. A new chapter on Termites has been included. Detailed reference to wood preservatives has been omitted as modern works dealing with this subject have recently been published. The book begins with a discussion of the economic impact of timber pests and disease. Separate chapters cover the nature of wood; the causes of deterioration in timber; fungal decay; discolorations or staining in timber; destruction caused by wood-boring insects: Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, and Lepidoptera; and destruction of wood by Isoptera (termites). Subsequent chapters deal with diseases of standing trees; the care of timber after felling and conversion; the decay of timber in buildings; the protection of timber in farm and garden; decay in ships, boats and marine works; and decay in vehicles, aircraft, poles, mining timbers, cooling towers, packing-cases, fibreboards, plywood, etc.

Book excerpt: A companion to 'Urban Pest Management', this book builds on the issues of insect pests in urban settings to discuss control strategies that look beyond products. From an environmental and health perspective, it is not always practical to spray chemicals indoors or in urban settings, so this work discusses sustainable control and best practice methods for managing insects that are vectors of disease, nuisance pests and the cause of structural damage.

Book Bark and Wood Boring Insects in Living Trees in Europe a Synthesis

Download or read book Bark and Wood Boring Insects in Living Trees in Europe a Synthesis written by François Lieutier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-24 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, a synthesis on the research work done in Europe on all Bark And Wood Boring Insects In Living Trees (BAWBILT) is presented. As final product of a four-year research project gathering together 100 scientists from 24 countries, the book is the fruit of a real collective synthesis in which all European specialists have participated. It reviews and comments on all the European literature, while considering the biological (trees, insects, associated organisms, and their relationships) and forest management aspects. However, although focused on the European forest, it also compares the available information and interpretations to those concerning similar species in other continents. It ends with propositions of research priorities for Europe. The book is directed to all scientists and students concerned with forest entomology and ecology, as well as to forest managers and all scientific public interested in forest biology.

With other species, remedial action is unnecessary. In many situations, preventive measures can significantly reduce the damage caused by these wood-destroying insects.

Book Tropical Forest Insect Pests

Download or read book Tropical Forest Insect Pests written by K. S. S. Nair and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-05-10 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical Forest Insect Pests, first published in 2007, promotes a better theoretical understanding of pest population dynamics, and causes of forest insect outbreaks in the tropics. Covering pests of both natural forests and plantations, it examines the diversity of tropical forest insects; their ecological functions; the concept of pests; and the incidence of pests in natural forests, plantations, and stored timber. General issues on which foresters and forest entomologists hold strong traditional views, such as the severity of pest incidence in plantations vs. natural forests, in plantations of exotics vs. indigenous tree species, and in monocultures vs. mixed plantations are discussed. The final section looks in detail at specific insect pests of the common plantation tree species across the tropics, with recommendations for their control. This is a comprehensive resource suitable for graduate students and researchers in forestry and tropical forest entomology, and for forest plantation managers in the tropics.

Understanding Housing Defects provides a concise, coherent and comprehensive introduction to the causes, investigation and diagnosis of housing defects. It is aimed at all those students and practitioners who require a broad understanding of housing defects as part of a wider sphere of academic or professional activity. The book has three specific objectives, to explain why, and how, defects occur. To enable the reader to recognise and identify building defects and to provide, where appropriate, guidance on their correct diagnosis. The authors have worked in both public and private sectors and have, between them over 75 years' experience in dealing with housing and general building defects. Currently, they are all lecturers at the University of the West England, where they teach on a variety of undergraduate and post-graduate courses. They are also actively involved in carrying out research and consultancy for a number of property owning organisations throughout the UK.

Book Wood Destroying Insects

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. W. Creffield
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1996-03
  • ISBN : 9780643058286
  • Pages : 52 pages

Download or read book Wood Destroying Insects written by J. W. Creffield and published by . This book was released on 1996-03 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many species of timber can be attacked by wood-destroying insects such as wood borers and termites. When dealing with timbers, it is important to be aware of the existence and habits of these insects. With some species of wood borer or termite, an infestation can result in serious damage necessitating treatment and repair or replacement of the affected timber. With other species, weakening of the timber is unlikely to occur, and unless a good appearance must be maintained, remedial action is unnecessary. In many situations, preventative measures can significantly reduce the damage caused by these wood-destroying insects. The aim of this handbook is to provide architects, engineers, builders, surveyors, foresters, members of the pest control and timber industries, and the general public with a ready source of reference to the more important wood borers and termites encountered in Australia. Most of the wood borers dealt with are pests of seasoned timber.
