Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MacLaynes have built a good life on their homestead at Shiloh. After several extended separations, their family is finally together. Mac's obligations beyond Craighead County are over, and he has promised that he will not be separated from his family again. Laurel lives in bliss in the Spring of 1861, declaring that she has all she'd ever dream of at Shiloh. Even the threat of impending war brings no real threat to her happiness because Mac is staunchly opposed to the Southern cause. He declared to the entire community that he will remain neutral throughout the war. Neither of them imagined the conflict, disappointment, and heartache that will impact their community in Northeast Arkansas during the next four years. Laurel staunchly declares "No War Will Come to Shiloh" in an embroidered sampler hanging across her mantle. Little did she know that shortly, The Star of the West would fire the opening shots at Fort Sumpter and officially begin the Civil War. Arkansas is a long way from that Carolina seaport, but the distance could not keep loss from Shiloh and Arkansas. Battles at Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove bloody Arkansas soil early in the war. Battles in Chalk Bluff and Helena bring soldiers and death to Northeast Arkansas. Skirmishes along the major rivers in Arkansas and even in Jonesboro are witnessed by members of the MacLayne family. Laurel and her MacLayne family must face the challenges if they are to survive. Like all families caught up in this national tragedy, they will use their courage, intelligence, and faith to help them survive. Only with the grace of God will they be able to rebuilt the life they'd known at Shiloh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Targum Onkelos (or Unkelus) is the official eastern (Babylonian) targum (Aramaic translation) to the Torah. However, its early origins may have been western, in Israel. Its authorship is attributed to Onkelos, a famous convert to Judaism in Tannaic times (c. 35-120 CE). According to Jewish tradition, the content of Targum Onkelos was originally conveyed by God to Moses at Mount Sinai. However, it was later forgotten by the masses, and rerecorded by Onkelos. Some identify this translation as the work of Aquila of Sinope in an Aramaic translation (Zvi Hirsch Chajes), or believe that the name "Onkelos" originally referred to Aquila but was applied in error to the Aramaic instead of the Greek translation. The translator is unique in that he avoids any type of personification. Samuel D. Luzzatto suggests that the translation was originally meant for the "simple people." This view was strongly rebutted by Nathan Marcus Adler in his introduction to Netinah La-Ger. In Talmudic times, and to this day in Yemenite Jewish communities, Targum Onkelos was recited by heart as a verse-by-verse translation alternately with the Hebrew verses of the Torah in the synagogue. The Talmud states that "a person should complete his portions of scripture along with the community, reading the scripture twice and the targum once (Shnayim mikra ve-echad targum)." This passage is taken by many to refer to Targum Onkelos.

Book excerpt: In the Civil War Battle of Shiloh, two soldiers are among the many thousands wounded or killed. One is Stanley, a Yankee, shot, his leg broken. The other is a Confederate, mortally wounded, the son of a local Christian family. Stanley tells Davina, the Confederate's mother, where her son is--on the condition that she will nurse him back to health. In spite of her anger that a Yankee should demand this of her, she agrees. Before her son dies, he urges his mother to take care of the Union soldier as if he were her own son. Davina's family is outraged that the soldier whose army killed their brother is being allowed to recover in their home. But her youngest son, Willy, who is blind, befriends Stanley. Eventually her teenaged daughter, Anna, and Stanley fall in love. But the oldest remaining son, Luke, resists Stanley with all his heart. Stanley befriends a slave family, the Jacksons, and they lead him to faith in Christ. But Luke's bitterness grows, and after wounding Stanley, he betrays him to a slave trader. Can Stanley escape and remain with the family he has come to love? Until Shiloh Comes is a story of love--love between Stanley and Anna, and love among the members of the two families on the farm, one white, one black. It is a story of honor and loyalty. It is a story of personal choices and their consequences. And once you have begun this new novel, you won't be able to put it down.

Download or read book Fair Clear and Terrible Second Edition written by Shirley Nelson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the century, a young man named Frank Weston Sandford, proclaiming himself the fulfillment of certain Biblical prophecies, founded a movement called Shiloh, its central location on a hill in the town of Durham, Maine. The movement's purpose was sweeping and ultimate--to prepare the world for the Second Coming of Christ and the cataclysmic events which would usher it in. The enactment of this mission spanned twenty-five years, involving many hundreds of people. Sandford, an appealing and volatile leader, erected a complex of buildings in Durham, opened stations in major American cities, then set sail on the high seas in a racing schooner with a select group of followers. Their intention was to circle the globe for Christ. Instead, they headed for doom. As the movement expanded, so did its dangers. In the court trials that structure the story, Sandford was finally convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to prison. Shirley Nelson, whose parents grew up in this unusual society, tells Shiloh's powerful story with understanding and grace. She captures the inner dimensions of an intense religious culture and deals poignantly with the frightening phenomenon of one personality in control of many others.
