Book The Tigers and Yankees in 61

Download or read book The Tigers and Yankees in 61 written by Jim Sargent and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-04-27 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Detroit Tigers gave a memorable performance in the pennant race against the New York Yankees in 1961, the American League's first expansion season. Starting faster, the Tigers held first place for more than half the season, until the Yankees caught up in late July. They met in a climactic three-game series at Yankee Stadium. The Bronx Bombers swept all three, winning the pennant for the eleventh time in 13 seasons. But the 18 games the Tigers and Yankees played against each other were some of the most exciting contests of '61. The Yankees' saga is well known but the Tigers' tale has largely been ignored. This book chronicles the season highlights, such as the home run duel between Roger Maris, who slugged a record 61, and Mickey Mantle, who hit a personal best 54. Other outstanding performances were given by the Tigers' Norm Cash, who led the league with a .361 average, and Rocky Colavito, who hit 45 home runs.

Book excerpt: From her infancy the author has been fascinated by that most magnificent and elusive of beasts, the tiger. Her second book on India, [this] is a personal account of her pilgramage to India's great wildlife parks and tiger sanctuaries ... and provides a comprehensive study of Ranthambhore, Bandhavgarh, Kanha and Corbett Tiger Reserves as well as detailed backgrounds to Nagarahole, Kaziranga, Pench, Bharatpur and Gir National Park, home of the rare Asiatic Lion ... In addition, the author highlights the continuing threat to India's tigers and the on-going efforts to protect them ... Dobbie is a Hindi speaker and uses her many contacts and childhood reminiscences to great effect throughout this book. The reader will also find valuable information on some of India's historical gems such as Gwalior, Orchha, Sonagiri, Mandu, Sanchi and Bhimbetka as well as the hill station of Nainital. India: The Tiger's Roar is certainly not a travel guide, nor a guide to the wildlife of India, although it is an excellent source of information on both subjects. Instead it is a heady blend of travelogue and personal insight, cultural and political philosophy, anecdotes, cautionary tales, historical and religious references and a thesis on the state of Indian wildlife conservation.

Book Sixty One in 61

Download or read book Sixty One in 61 written by Robert M. Gorman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about Roger Maris and the historic summer of 1961 when he broke Babe Ruth's single-season home run record yet little is known about the pitchers on the other side of the tale. One of the many knocks against Maris was that he faced inferior pitching in an American League watered down by expansion from eight to 10 teams. But was that really the case? Did Maris face has-beens and never-weres while Ruth confronted the cream of AL pitching? Who were these starters and relievers and how good were they? Drawing on first-hand accounts, interviews and a range of contemporary sources, this study covers each of Maris' 63 home runs that season, including the lost one and his game-winning World Series dinger. Biographies of each of his 48 victims cover the pitcher's career, pitching style and the circumstances of the game. Maris faced some really fine pitching that summer despite what many contended then--and now.

Book Tigers Roar

Book excerpt: Despite Asia's protracted economic troubles, the region is poised to recover and perhaps become stronger than ever. This timely work identifies the major challenges facing Asia's Four Tigers (Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, and Hong Kong), Japan, China, and their Southeast Asian neighbors (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines) as the region increases it role and stature on the world stage. Highly regarded Asia policy makers and opinion shapers consider such key questions as: What is the appropriate response to China's ascent? Are there prospects for U.S.-Asian partnerships (in such areas as the environment)? Is economic cooperation between both sides of the Pacific realistic? How can Americans gain from Asia's attempts to rebuild her institutions? And will East Asia and the United States adjust to a multi-polar security and economic milieu?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bio-bibliography is the first book to examine the life and career of one of Hollywood's most durable leading men, Richard Widmark. Though never considered in the same star category as Burt Lancaster or Gregory Peck, his era, Widmark nonetheless established himself as a dependable and popular leading man in westerns, dramas, adventures, gangster and war films, and by 1984, he had appeared in 62 full-length films. From his earliest days in radio and on stage, to more recent appearances in films and on television, the entire performing arts career of Richard Widmark is chronicled in this volume, and documented with complete bibliographic entries. Respecting Widmark's reputation for privacy, Holston has focused on the public aspect of the actor's career, tracing the abundance of interesting on-screen events that have made up his life. The book begins with a chronology of significant dates and events in Widmark's career and is followed by a biographical sketch. Separate sections cite credits for radio, Broadway stage, film, and television appearances, as well as a complete listing of Widmark works that are available on home video. The book concludes with a lengthy annotated bibliography of works about Widmark, as well as a complete index. A number of illustrations are also included. As the only book devoted exclusively to Richard Widmark, this work will be a valuable resource to film fans and scholars, an important reference for courses on motion picture history and the development of the film industry, and a significant addition to university and public libraries.

The collection of approximately 400 articles, alphabetically arranged and written by some seventy faculty members and alumni in addition to the author, covers all aspects of Princeton life in the past as well as in the present. Of special interest are the biographies of eminent Princetonians, including the University's presidents, well-known trustees, distinguished deans, famous alumni, and some of Princeton's most prominent and popular professors. Other articles in the book embrace a wide range of topics: histories of academic departments, programs, and research units; descriptions of the honor system, the preceptorial method, the four-course plan, and coeducation; a historical survey of the University's acquisition of land and the development of its campus, together with articles on its principal buildings; pieces on student activities; accounts of alumni activities; articles on athletics; portraits of notable personalities; and commentaries on a host of lighter topics such as the cane spree, beer jackets, the Faculty Song, the proctors, and Veterans of Future Wars. Among the most important articles are one summarizing Woodrow Wilson's Sesquicentennial address, "Princeton in the Nation's Service," and a dozen others recording faculty and alumni achievements toward the goal encompassed by that phrase. Originally published in 1978. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions.
