Download or read book Naked Masks written by Luigi Pirandello and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1957-09-01 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special one-volume edition features five great plays by one of the most celebrated and fascinating dramatists of the twentieth century. Pirandello, awarded the Nobel Prize in 1934, was the playwright par excellence of the conflict between illusion and reality. His modern and sensationally original plays dramatize with force and eloquence the isolation of the individual from society and from himself. The editor, Eric Bentley, is an international theater authority. In addition to the Introduction and the biographical and bibliographical material in the Appendices, Mr. Bentley has prepared for this volume the first English translations of the play Liolà and Pirandello’s important “Preface” to Six Characters in Search of an Author. Included Plays: Liolà It Is So! (If You Think So) Henry IV Six Characters in Search of an Author Each in His Own Way
Download or read book Antarctica written by Gabrielle Walker and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed science writer presents a wide-ranging exploration of Antarctica’s history, nature, and global significance in this “rollicking good read” (Kirkus). From the early expeditions of Ernest Shackleton to David Attenborough’s documentary series Frozen Planet, the continent of Antarctica has captured the world’s imagination. After the Antarctic Treaty of 1961, decades of scientific research revealed the true extent of its many mysteries. Now former Nature magazine staff writer Gabrielle Walker tells the full story of Antarctica—from its fascinating history to its uncertain future and the international teams of researchers who brave its forbidding climate. Drawing on her broad travels across the continent, Walker weaves all the significant threads of life on the vast ice sheet into a multifaceted narrative, illuminating what it really feels like to be there and why it draws so many different kinds of people. She chronicles cutting-edge science experiments, visits to the South Pole, and unsettling portents about our future in an age of global warming. “We are all anxious Antarctic watchers now, and Walker's book is the essential primer.”—The Guardian, UK

While the region is primarily a remote and mountainous glaciated wilderness, walking is easily accessible with clear trails, good public transport and regular mountain huts and campsites. The centrepiece of this dramatic area is the 10-11 day Torres del Paine Circuit (also known as the 'O' Circuit), while the shorter Half Circuit (the 'W') visits much of the same sights in 4-5 days. The guidebook also includes four shorter day walks, a multi-day trek in Argentina's Los Glaciares national park, and several excursions from Puerto Natales and El Calafate. This guidebook includes advice on getting to and around the regions, languages, visa, currency, accommodation and facilities in the National Parks, as well as useful guidance on what to take and expect on the treks. Also featured is background information on the geology, history, wildlife, flora and cultures of the regions, resulting in an excellent companion guide to help you explore the region.

Download or read book PATAGONIA Torres Del Paine National Park written by Oleg Senkov and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the 2nd edition of my travel guide about wonderful Torres del Paine National Park. I updated: 1) all factual information, prices and conditions for current season 2020-2021; 2) added miles/foot data to all measures in metric system as km/m; 3) added 1x big general map, and 6x hiking maps for each trail, so that now the guide contains 8x maps in total. This is a unique and the most complete "smart" travel guide, which I made, at first, to be solely used in my own, after buying so many travel guides and still feeling - they aren't good enough for my adventures to explore wilderness as a biologist and wildlife/travel photographer. I was missing it during my trip to Patagonia in 2017, otherwise, I would be much more efficient as a wildlife photographer and traveler. I hope the book will be a good "practical tool", an all-to-know set of guide books for you (for me as well), while you are exploring the world with responsible mind and open heart as a truly nature lover. The book contains 100+ GPS coordinates of important to know places, 50x website links, covering all the important campsites, hotels, viewpoints, trails, key sightseeing, it has 8x detailed trekking maps, and 15x photographs I made in March-April 2017. The book first describes how to get in/out the park, all park's updated rules and prices, then how to design your trekking route and how to book all accommodation in the park and nearby. In addition to popular "W" and "O" trekking circuits in the park, I give information about another 6 less-known, secret "off-the-bitten-pass" trails with hiking maps for each. I also give all the details for wild and paid camping, hotels, hostels, domes, cabins, food stores, roads conditions, travel scenarios, public buses, prices for touristic services, paid tours, wildlife safaris, fishing, kayaking, horseback riding. At the end of the guide, I give detailed information what kind of wild animals and where you can meet in the park (puma, condors, huemul, guanaco, fox) and their behavior. I also describe where you can find fossils from Jurassic Era of ichthyosaur, of a large prehistoric marine dolphin-like predator, or to see ancient cave paintings of indigenous tribes lived here 3000-8000 years ago. The book can be equally useful for "budget" adventure seekers, solo/group travelers, "fast & easy" with a rented car/campers or travel agency users as well as for paid wildlife and travel photographers on a mission. Printed versions of the book just went far beyond of my anticipation; quality is highest standard possible, they are rather small (15x23 cm), light-weight (only 150 g each), fully colorful inside with maps and GPS coordinates, pages are robustly made and glued, the cover is made of water-repellent paper, books are flexible, you can bend them, nothing will happen... though, they are ideal to put them into your backpack and use them while you travel through wonderful Patagonia... Enjoy and take care!

Download or read book Patagonia Chronicle written by Susan Alcorn and published by Appalachian Trail Conference. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Patagonia Chronicle: On Foot in Torres del Paine" enables readers to gain a sense of the rewards and challenges of travel south of the 40th parallel in Chile and Argentina-in the area known as Patagonia. Through a combination of journal entries, interviews, historic documents, and essays on subjects unique to the region, the reader samples the richness of the land and its peoples past and present. In addition, readers will find a wealth of practical information including tips on pre-trip planning, transportation, and accommodations. The book is for anyone contemplating a hike in Chile's most famous park. Hikers en route to Torres del Paine will benefit from the detailed park information. They'll find descriptions of the accommodations, trekking routes, and trails as well as maps, time and mileage charts, suggested itineraries, and a trail elevation profile. However, "Patagonia Chronicle" is more than a guide to trekking in that spectacular park: it casts a much larger net. As such, this book will appeal not only to hikers, but also to travelers of all stripes. Besides Torres del Paine, readers discover the gateway towns that most Patagonian travelers enjoy exploring such as: Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales, and El Calafate. They visit Los Glaciares National Park-home of Perito Moreno Glacier and Mount Fitz Roy. Travelers will also find insider information about touring Chile's and Argentina's more temperate Lake Districts and several other national parks inside and outside of Patagonia. They'll learn about Ushuaia-the "End of the World," and hub for visits to Antarctica. And, because most travelers to Patagonia will spend some time in Santiago or Buenos Aires on their way farther south, they'll find the colorful chapters on those capital cities helpful. Finally, an underlying question raised in the book: how to gauge the risks and confront the fears that must be overcome when seeking adventure in unknown territory can be helpful and inspiring to any hiker, backpacker, or climber. In "Patagonia Chronicle" we learn that the author wants to backpack the Torres del Paine back country circuit, but she knows that the trek can range from a moderate activity to a life-threatening one-depending on the extremely unpredictable weather. In life there are always demons to slay: how does one decide when to continue on and when to turn back?
