Book excerpt: Take a breathtaking plunge into the colorful world of the Coral Triangle, the waters that cradle Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste. One of the world’s most mature reef networks, home to 30 percent of all the world’s coral, this magnificent marine expanse boasts the highest diversity of coral and fish species on the planet. Underwater photographer Chris Leidy beautifully captures a vision of this wonderland through his lens and conveys the inherent complexities of each singular, fleeting scene, illustrating the vital magic of the Coral Triangle.

Book Computational Acoustics

Download or read book Computational Acoustics written by Manfred Kaltenbacher and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a state-of-art overview of numerical schemes efficiently solving the acoustic conservation equations (unknowns are acoustic pressure and particle velocity) and the acoustic wave equation (pressure of acoustic potential formulation). Thereby, the different equations model both vibrational- and flow-induced sound generation and its propagation. Latest numerical schemes as higher order finite elements, non-conforming grid techniques, discontinuous Galerkin approaches and boundary element methods are discussed. Main applications will be towards aerospace, rail and automotive industry as well as medical engineering. The team of authors are able to address these topics from the engineering as well as numerical points of view.

Book A Numerical Investigation of Astronomic Tidal Circulation in Puget Sound

Download or read book A Numerical Investigation of Astronomic Tidal Circulation in Puget Sound written by Richard A. Schmalz and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astronomic tidal circulation in Puget Sound, Washington, is investigated using the Waterways Implicit Flooding Model (WIFM) in two-dimensional, vertically-averaged context. The state of knowledge of general circulation characteristics is presented as a prelude to the numerical modeling investigation. A general tide prediction program had been developed which predicts both tidal evaluations and horizontal currents. Astronomic tidal characteristics are studied on a 70 (horizontal) by 103 (vertical) dimension global grid comprising 7,210 cells with a maximum spatial resolution of 3,750 ft. A 90-sec time-step was employed in all WIFM long-wave simulations resulting in a maximum Courant number of 4.1. Simulated tidal elevations and vertically-averaged currents were calibrated to predicted values for the 16-18 January 1981 spring tide period. Calibrated bottom friction mechanics were verified using the 13-15 January 1981 neap tide period. Simulated results corresponded to predicted values of elevation and current except for some discrepancies in the Southern Basin. Peak current magnitudes were tabulated at existing disposal sites for both calibration and verification of astronomic tide conditions. Meteorological effects and freshwater inflows were not considered. The 11-13 December 1985 extreme spring tide period was also simulated, and maximum current velocities and their associated times of occurrence were tabulated. Keywords: Finite difference method; Hydrodynamics; Mathematical models; Dredge disposal.

Book Hydrodynamics and Sediment Dynamics of Tidal Inlets

Download or read book Hydrodynamics and Sediment Dynamics of Tidal Inlets written by David G. Aubrey and published by Springer. This book was released on 1988-11-28 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along much of the shoreline of the world, tidal inlets play an important role in nearshore processes, providing links between the coastal oceans and protected embayments. Their study is of particular importance not only for the understanding of fundamental processes in coastal oceanography but also for engineering and the proper management of the delicate equilibrium of our shorelines. This volume, based on the International Symposium on Hydrodynamics and Sediment Dynamics of Tidal Inlets held at Woods Hole, MA, presents the reader with an overview of contemporary research on these important features. The coverage includes: - mathematical modelling, including a review of inlet hydrodynamics, - observations on hydrodynamics, - sedimentology and morphology, - tidal deltas, - processes and policies pertaining to sedimentation, and the - impacts of shore protection and dredging in beaches.
