Book Thrusters and Sleepers

Download or read book Thrusters and Sleepers written by A PEP Report and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1965. This book is of compelling interest to all concerned with the good management of industry. This report examines the attitudes of managers towards the problems that confront them. The attitude of managers can be divided in to two broad categories, described in the report as 'thrusting' and 'sleeping'. The research conducted in this report shows that the managements of 'thrusting' firms are characterized, first, by a determination to expand, secondly by a precise knowledge of the environment in which they operate and, thirdly, by the systematic use of techniques which enable them to make rational decisions. In order to find possible ways in which more firms might achieve a similar 'self-awareness' PEP staff had discussions with nearly 100 businessmen, senior civil servants, scientists and educationalists. As a result of these investigations PEP has formulated some suggestions as to how the gap between thrusters and sleepers might be narrowed to the benefit of the whole economy.

Book Management Strategies

Download or read book Management Strategies written by Samuel Eilon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wide range of possible performance criteria for business enterprises raises serious questions of definition and measurement. Indeed, measurement is at the heart of the analysis of success and failure of business operations, and much depends on the quality of the information that is available. The evaluation of business performance comes into sharp focus with the pUblication of companies' annual and semi-annual accounts, which are then followed by commentaries from stockbrokers and business analysts in reports to investors and in articles in the financial press. Captains of industry may not have to suffer the indignity of frequent public opinion polls that gauge the popularity of politicians. Nevertheless, they are plagued by a similar phenomenon, in that views expressed by analysts, customers, shareholders and investors, serve as powerful reminders to senior executives that the business world is subject to many upheavals and that even the most seemingly secure can suddenly fall from grace.

Book Principles of Behavioral Economics

Download or read book Principles of Behavioral Economics written by Peter E. Earl and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-28 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is unique among modern contributions to behavioral economics in presenting a grand synthesis between the kind of behavioral economics popularized by Richard Thaler, earlier approaches such as those of the 1978 Nobel Laureate Herbert Simon, evolutionary psychology, and evolutionary economics from Veblen and Marshall through to neo-Schumpeterian thinking. The synthesis employs a complex adaptive systems approach to how people think, the lifestyles they build, and how new production technologies and products are gradually adopted and produce changes. Using a huge range of examples, it takes behavioral economics from its recent focus on 'nudging' consumers, to the behavior of firms and other organizations, the challenges of achieving structural change and transitioning to environmentally sustainable lifestyles, and instability of the financial system. This book will be of great interest to academics and graduate students who seek a broader view of what behavioral economics is and what it might become.

Book The Rise and Decline of Small Firms Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The Rise and Decline of Small Firms Routledge Revivals written by Jonathan Boswell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-27 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1973, this title examines the development patterns of small businesses. It considers why people found firms; the factors that contribute to entrepreneurial success; problems of management succession and inheritance; the strengths and weaknesses of family firms; the reasons why small firms are taken over; and the social, economic and managerial context of their growth, decline, and revival. Based on a survey of sixty-four firms, each employing fewer than five hundred people, in engineering, hosiery, and knitwear, and on the records of 370 similar organisations, a striking gap in performance and management attitudes emerges as between dynamic, mostly founder-run firms and stagnant, mostly inherited ones. Where many books are either minutely specialised or highly abstract and over-generalised, Jonathan Boswell’s work is practical and diagnostic, probing the inner recesses of the small firm sector. With particular relevance to the difficulties faced by entrepreneurs in today’s economic environment, this title advances selective measures to deal with old firms and inheritance, and a wide range of policies to encourage new entrepreneurship.

Book The Making of Modern Management

Download or read book The Making of Modern Management written by John F. Wilson and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2006-08-24 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management has always been part of human organization, but it is only in the last two centuries or so that it has been the central driver of economic activity, as companies have moved from family firms to hugely complex, multinational corporations with many layers of management. The term management is commonly used in three ways: as a process or activity; as a structure in any organization; and as a group or class of people carrying out certain roles in an organization. This book is the first detailed account of the evolution of management in all three senses. The focus is mainly on the UK, but throughout the broader question of why corporate management structures developed so impressively in the USA, Germany and Japan is borne in mind, while arguably little progresswas made in this regards in the UK.Equally the authors consider why, given that management is now so widely studied, so little careful research has been undertaken into the evolution of the practice and the profession of management. The book is divided into four sections. Part One provides An Introduction to Management History; Part Two, Management and Organization, explores the historical development through the 19th and 20th centuries; Part Three, Managers in Context, looks at the social and cultural context of management and managers; and Part Four considers three key functional areas, labour, marketing, and accounting and finance. This rich, detailed, and path-breaking book will be essential reading for anyone wanting to understand the evolution of management as we now understand it, whether academics, students or managers themselves.

Book Managing for Profit

Download or read book Managing for Profit written by R. R. Gilchrist and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, first published in 1971, the author develops and tests a productivity system based on Added Value as the measure of company income and output. The theory behind the system is that the behaviour of a company can best be explained in terms of its need to create an income. From this, it follows that its effectiveness depends on the efficiency with which it uses all the resources at its disposal to create this income. If it is accepted that the need is to create an income, then the efforts of the employees, the objectives of individuals, the pricing procedures, and the control systems must be co-ordinated to achieve this end. This title will be of interest to students of management, economics, and business studies.
