Book excerpt: Work has many faces, sometimes a heavy touch and sometimes a light touch. This work was being performed by little boys, nimble but shockingly young to the modern mind. The Life of a Mill Boy was written by a mill boy himself. Lucky enough to be literate, to retain some semblance of good health and the clear eyed memory to bring his world to life. The life of poor Al Priddy will grip you and then break your heart. He loses his parents, he crosses the Atlantic Ocean, he is illegally re-aged and graduates from school and it seems as though every glimmer of hope fades away. The resilience, optimism and fair mindedness of this tender youth lifts the spirits of the reader and makes reading on utterly necessary, just to follow the twisting path with him. This may be from Al's perspective but the insight you gain into his world is certainly wider than a little boy's personal thoughts. His Aunt, furious about her circumstances, her husband, his drinking and their debt. His Uncle, kind but weak, hoping for a better life for his family but wallowing in his incapacity to deliver it. The characters fly by, even a white haired, angelic school teacher who helps Al to get a few clothes without holes in them. The world is harsh but in every person, no matter how harshly we wish to judge them, there is a glimmer of pity, humanity or regret. Any account can give the bare details of a mill boy's life but Through the Mill is truly special in showing the thoughts and feelings of the people living in this harsh world. Korl we call it here: a light, porous substance, of a delicate, waxen, flesh-colored tinge. Out of the blocks of this korl, Wolfe, in his off-hours from the furnace, had a habit of chipping and moulding figures,—hideous, fantastic enough, but sometimes strangely beautiful: even the mill-men saw that, while they jeered at him. It was a curious fancy in the man, almost a passion.” - Rebecca Harding Davis, Life in the Iron Mills Life in the Iron Mills is one of the first American novels that depicts the precarious state of the impoverished working class. ‘Molly Wolfe’ is a member of this class working 12 hours a day, six days a week to earn a living. Because of his condition, he cannot develop his innate artistic talent. His cousin, Deborah tries to help him but the consequences are devastating. Xist Publishing is a digital-first publisher. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vision of a Mother's Heart is the story of Isabel Greene, an ordinary ten-year-old girl from an ordinary southern family that is living off the land in the 1920s. They are hardworking, God-honoring, fun-loving people who are considered poor by some but think of themselves as quite happy. Isabel's Mama teaches her the joys of cooking, sewing, doing laundry, and taking care of children, while always turning each chore into a time of singing and laughter and striving to instruct her children in the truth by planting seeds of faith in their hearts. When tragedy strikes, life drastically changes for the Greene family. Although the family attempts to press on, they are faced with further calamity when a fire ravages their home. Despite their escape, they are left with difficult questions: Where is God in tragedy and suffering? Why does He allow people to face hardships when all they want to do is honor Him? What if their worst fear-separation from one another-is realized? Can the Greene family trust God when everything around them is falling apart? The Vision of a Mother's Heart was inspired by the author's grandmother, Isabel. Her mother's life, love, and instruction sewed seeds of faith in the hearts of her children that now have been passed to the next generation. The story weaves a heartwarming tale that will leave you thinking about the long-term impact of your everyday decisions.

Book A Memoir of Robert Blincoe

Download or read book A Memoir of Robert Blincoe written by John Brown and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-03-29 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Blincoe (c. 1792-1860) became famous during the 1830s for his popular "autobiography" detailing the horrific account of his childhood spent as a labourer in English cotton mills. This work, however, is not technically an autobiography as his story was told to journalist John Brown, who wrote the manuscript but died before publishing it. The manuscript was given to a friend who published the resulting book, A Memoir of Robert Blincoe, in five episodes in the magazine The Lion in 1832. Historian John Waller has asserted that Charles Dickens based his character Oliver Twist on Blincoe, but no firm documentary or anecdotal evidence exists that this is true. Still, the publication of Blincoe's "memoir" had an impact on bringing the horrors of child labour to a wider audience, which in turn led to legislation to limit working hours and improve working conditions for child labourers.
