And the tears rolled down his cheeks. He almost wished that he could die. Then a patter, patter, sounded on the stony beach behind him. A glad throb shot through Bunny's heart, for he knew that light step. Before he could turn his head, a warm nose was poked in beside his face, and a bushy tail was waving about in the air. Carlo! Carlo! Cried the boy, clasping his dog-friend to his breast, and burying his face in the black, curly fur. You care for me, doggie, don't you? I wonder if God sent you to me? Book Material Cultures in Canada

Download or read book Material Cultures in Canada written by Thomas Allen and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Material Cultures in Canada presents the vibrant and diverse field of material culture studies in Canadian literary, artistic, and political contexts today. The first of its kind, this collection features sixteen essays by leading scholars in Canada, each of whom examines a different object of study, including the beaver, geraniums, comics, water, a musical playlist, and the human body. The book’s three sections focus, in turn, on objects that are persistently material, on things whose materiality blends into the immaterial, and on the materials of spaces. Contributors highlight some of the most exciting new developments in the field, such as the emergence of “new materialism,” affect theory, globalization studies, and environmental criticism. Although the book has a Canadian centre, the majority of its contributors consider objects that cross borders or otherwise resist national affiliation. This collection will be valuable to readers within and outside of Canada who are interested in material culture studies and, in addition, will appeal to anyone interested in the central debates taking place in Canadian political and cultural life today, such as climate change, citizenship, shifts in urban and small-town life, and the persistence of imperialism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of the Heart and Home Some of these poems have been widely circulated, not only in Canada, but in the United States and Great Britain and some appear for the first time in the pages of this book. They are ofi'ered solely upon their merits and upon those alone they must stand -or fall. Whatever there is in them calculated to stir the heart of our common Humanity, - to voice forth its joys or its sorrows, - to truly interpret its emo tions, - or to give utterance to its aspirations and its hopes, will live; that which does not thus speak for Humanity, has no right to live; and the sooner it finds a merited oblivion the better for its author and the world. Download or read book The Story of the Canadian Pacific Railway Classic Reprint written by Keith Morris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Canadian Pacific Railway Rom a deep canyon in the heart of a range F Of Canadian mountains there emerged on a September day a group of unkempt and weather-scarred men. They continued their stumbling march over a ground covered by masses of rock, fallen trees, long rank ferns, and poisonous devil's club. At mid-day they halted, wearied and hungry, and each man ate his perilously meagre rations. Then one Of the party, a tall, bearded man with a commanding presence and distinguished appearance, despite the raggedness Of his attire, turned to a younger man beside him and gave him a few words Of instructions. The younger man fired two rifle shots in rapid succession. All the men then listened intently. The report of a gun shot was heard in reply. The rifle emitted another three shots, and again a gun Shot was heard - once - twice - three times. Thank God! We have established our con nections! The tall, bearded man, evidently the leader, exclaimed. The longed-for supplies were there as arranged. All anxiety for the future was over. The party hurried forward, eagerly and excitedly overcoming the Obstacles underfoot. After a little time they halted to rest, and the young man again pilled the trigger Of his loaded rifle. Two shots, more distinct from their closer proximity, were heard. The men again advanced, elation marked on every countenance. Going straight in the direction of the sound, they strove to follow it. Soon they were out of the green woods and before them lay the waters of the Columbia. On the opposite shore, about a mile distant, they Observed the smoke of a camp. A series of hurrahs broke from the men - their friends from Kamloops were there at the appointed meeting-place. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada and the Empire OF the many interesting political and economic questions which have come to the front in the Opening years Of the twentieth century, one of the most fascinating is the future of Canada. It has captured the imagination Of mankind and aroused world-wide attention. It is not only of command ing interest in itself, but there is involved in it a much larger and more important question - the future of the British Empire. In the present eventful generation the whole range Of the civilised world has been undergoing profound changes, some caused by wars, some by peaceful revolu tions, but most of them by new developments of commerce and industry. NO nation or country has altogether escaped, and where on the surface they make the smallest Show they may underneath be the most active and disintegrating. A2 T he British E mpire in Transition. Great Britain, the head and heart of a mighty Empire once so stable and firm-rooted, is now plunging deeper and deeper in a vortex of new and strange movements. It is undergoing the most revolutionary changes in its long and eventful history - changes all the more dangerous for being little understood. They are least Of all understood by those who must bear the risk of them. Our Constitutional crises, our naval scares, and our electioneering contests are but the outward symptoms of profound organic unrest. The whole basis and groundwork Of the Empire are under going a Silent transformation. Its centre Of gravity is shifting and may not remain much longer within these Islands. Already London is in a much smaller degree the capital of the British Empire than it was in the infancy Of the colonies. Book Roughing It in the Bush Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Roughing It in the Bush Vol 1 of 2 written by Susanna Moodie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roughing It in the Bush, Vol. 1 of 2: Or, Life in Canada IN most instances, emigration is a matter of necessity, not of choice and this is more especially true of the emigration of persons of respectable con nections, or of any station or position in the world. Few educated persons, accustomed to the refinements and luxuries of European society, ever willingly re linquish those advantages, and place themselves beyond the protective influence of the wise and revered institutions of their native land, without the pressure of some urgent cause. Emigration may, indeed, generally be regarded as an act of Severe duty, performed at the expense of personal enjoy ment, and accompanied by the sacrifice of those local attachments which stamp the scenes amid which our childhood grew, in imperishable characters upon the heart. Nor is it until adversity has pressed sorely upon the proud and wounded spirit of the well educated sons and daughters of old but impoverished families, that they gird up the loins of the mind, and arm themselves with fortitude to meet and dare the heart-breaking conflict. The ordinary motives for the emigration of such persons may be summed up in a few brief words 5 the emigrant's hope of bettering his condition, and of escaping from the vulgar sarcasms too often hurled at the less wealthy by the purse-proud, common place people of the world. But there is a higher motive still, which has its orig1n In that love of independence which springs up spontaneously in the breasts of the high-souled children of a glorious land. They cannot labour in a menial capacity in the country where they were born and educated to com mand. They can trace no difference between them selves and the more fortunate individuals of a race whose blood warms their veins, and whose name they hear. The want of wealth alone places an impassable barrier between them and the more favoured Off spring of the same parent stock; and they go forth to make for themselves a new name and to find another country, to forget the past and to live in the future, to exult in the prospect of their children being free and the land of their adoption great.
