Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any pattern of behavior in which one partner abuses the other physically, emotionally, psychologically, or financially is considered domestic violence. It has many faces and affects people of all sexes, ages, and socioeconomic statuses. As a pervasive and deplorable social problem, domestic violence has devastating effects on its victims and their loved ones. The following are examples of frequent forms of domestic violence: - The use of physical force against or for the purpose of controlling a partner is an example of physical violence. Physical violence can take the shape of any of the following actions: hitting, slapping, punching, kicking, choking, etc. - One form of abuse is known as "emotional or psychological abuse," and it entails exerting control over a partner's feelings and thoughts. Abusive behavior can take many forms, such as relentless criticism, insults, humiliation, threats, intimidation, isolation, and gaslighting (which causes the victim to question their own view of reality). - When one partner pressures or intimidates another into sexual activity against their will, this is sexual abuse. Any sexual act that is not mutually agreed upon is included in this category. - Economic or financial abuse occurs when one spouse uses their access to or use of money resources to exert dominance and control over the other. Money can be withheld, the victim's career or education might be sabotaged, and the victim can be saddled with debt. - Abuse in the digital or cyber realm refers to the use of electronic devices for the sake of power and control or harassment of a relationship. Some examples of this kind of behavior are eavesdropping on conversations and tracking where people go online or on their phones, and cyberbullying. - The term "stalking" refers to a set of unwelcome and intrusive actions taken with the intent to threaten, harass, or intimidate a partner. This can be done in a variety of ways, such as by following them, calling them repeatedly, or sending them unwelcome texts. - Some abusers will try to control and manipulate their victims by appealing to their religious or spiritual beliefs. Be aware that domestic violence can take many forms and might worsen over time. Injuries, trauma, anxiety, sadness, and low self-esteem are just some of the physical and psychological consequences that victims of domestic violence often endure. Domestic abuse is a serious problem that requires immediate attention. Many services exist to help victims of domestic violence, such as crisis lines, shelters, and advocacy groups. Always put your own well-being and safety first.

Book Ending Domestic Violence Captivity

Download or read book Ending Domestic Violence Captivity written by Ludy Green and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Ludy Green's introduction to the battered women's movement took place when she volunteered in a shelter in Washington, D.C. many years ago. She immediately saw the need to assist victims of abuse and trafficking by placing them in the workforce--her theory being that financial independence would fulcrum these women away from their abusers, by providing them with the necessary skills to earn a living. Under the careful guidance of Dr. Green, Second Chance Employment Services has assisted women by outfitting them with new clothing, training and the commensurate confidence with which to interview for and hold a job. This concept of establishing employment for victims of abuse and trafficking is a solution oriented step in overcoming abuse. Along the way, Dr. Green tapped a nerve--engaging politicians, CEOs of large corporations, Congress and the United Nations to acknowledge and embrace her vision. In 2013, she was instrumental in providing some new language for the updated Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). Through employment a woman can gain her independence, her well being and her dignity to ultimately distance herself from her abuser. Dr. Green's book is a road map for this journey.

Book excerpt: Strength. Courage. Resilience. Share one woman's personal journey as she speaks out against abuse and stands her ground after a lifetime of trauma. Every day, domestic abuse hotlines in the US field over 20,000 phone calls, mostly from women. Those calls are from people who recognize that they need help... and who are able to summon the strength and courage to speak out. But what about those who don't feel safe enough to call? What about those who dismiss their experiences as 'normal' or 'deserved'? Domestic abuse can take many forms -- and it's fast becoming a global epidemic. If it's something you've been through, you know only too well how isolating it can feel. There's no one you can talk to, and no matter how hard you try to avoid repeating old patterns, it's all too easy to get sucked back into a cycle of abuse. But how does this happen... and how can you recognize the signs so it doesn't happen again? Trauma Bonds offers more than a self-help guide ever could: it's an open and honest memoir detailing one woman's harrowing story as she overcomes abuse after abuse. Through frank and compelling accounts like this, it's possible to see your own story reflected in her words. Your story may not be the same, but there will be patterns you recognize; accounts that make you want to shout, "Me too!" It's through writing like this that you feel seen... and that is how we raise awareness of an issue that affects a troubling number of women worldwide. In Trauma Bonds, you'll find a heart-wrenching and captivating account of one woman's determination to not only survive, but thrive. You'll discover: An honest and detailed memoir capturing the most difficult and painful details in a cycle of abuse that follows the writer from the UK, to Africa (Nigeria), and to the USA How a seed can be planted at a shockingly young age and set the stage for a lifetime of abuse The value of hindsight in piecing together past wrongs you didn't realize were examples of abuse (the author was in her mid-40s before the puzzle pieces fell into place) How abusers seek to keep their actions hidden... but sometimes those actions can be hidden in plain sight The stark reality of what it's like to be haunted by your experiences of childhood sexual abuse How a lifetime of recurring abuse can take its toll on your mental health Informative and helpful subheadings to break up the text and guide you to a deeper understanding The value of spirituality and therapy in overcoming trauma and taking back power A deeper understanding of the Cycle of Abuse and how child grooming can teach you to ignore your own feelings (without you even realizing) An empowering tale of strength and resilience, giving you the courage to help you find your own And much more. Seeing the truth of your own experiences can be painful and difficult. When someone is willing to hold a mirror up to your story with a vulnerable account of their own, it can help you see patterns and cycles you weren't aware of. Whether you have abuse of your own to unravel or you're simply a compassionate and curious ally, Alexis Taiwo's account is an enlightening insight into the extraordinary power and resilience of those who survive abuse. Content note: this book contains references to sexual and physical violence toward both adults and children.
