Book My Reminiscences of East Africa Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Reminiscences of East Africa Classic Reprint written by General Von Lettow-Vorbeck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Reminiscences of East Africa N all the German colonies, though but a few decades old, a life full of promise was discernible. We were beginning to under stand the national value of our colonial possessions; settlers and capital were venturing in; industries and factories were beginning to flourish. Compared with that of other nations, the colonizing process of Germany had progressed peacefully and steadily, and the inhabitants had confidence in the justice of German administration. This development had barely commenced when it was destroyed by the world war. In spite of all tangible proofs to the contrary, an unjustifiable caign of falsehood is being conducted in order to make the world believe that the Germans lacked colonizing talent and were cruel to the natives. A small force, mainly composed of these very natives, opposed this development. Almost without any external means of coercion, even without immediate payment, this force, with its numerous native followers, faithfully followed its German leaders throughout the whole of the prolonged war against a more than hundredfold superiority. When the armistice came it was still fit to fight, and imbued with the best soldierly spirit. That is a fact which cannot be controverted, and is in itself a sufficient answer to the hostile mis-statements. Book America s Covert War In East Africa

Download or read book America s Covert War In East Africa written by Clara Usiskin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clara Usiskin has spent eight years investigating the "War on Terror" and its effects in the East and Horn of Africa, documenting hundreds of cases of rendition, secret detention and targeted killings. As a result of her work exposing abuses carried out by regional governments and their international partners, Clara was deported from Kenya and Uganda and is currently persona non grata in both countries. Her book sets out the historical background to today's covert war, including the early Somali jihads and British repression in colonial Kenya, through to the 1998 US Embassy Bombings in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, and President Clinton's early rendition programme. America's Covert War in East Africa then looks at the US Military's new Africa Command, with its emphasis on counterterrorism, alongside increasing use of targeted killings by security forces in the region, and continued renditions and secret detention. Finally, Usiskin investigates the shorter and longer term consequences of such intensive militarisation, and the proliferation of surveillance and other technologies of control in East Africa and its surrounding waters, focussing in particular on their impact on vulnerable ethnic and religious groups in a highly volatile region.

Book The East African Force 1915 1919

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The East African Force, 1915-1919: An Unofficial Record of Its Creation and Fighting Career; Together With Some Account of the Civil and Military Administrative Conditions in East Africa Before and During That Period The record of the doings of the East African Force here set out is not taken from official documents, I must, therefore, crave indulgence for errors. The only written record I have referred to is a kind of diary, written up at irregular intervals during the time I spent on military duty in' East Africa, and giving my idea of the happenings there. By far the greater part of this is written entirely from memory. It gives the impressions that I received at the time, as one who was, to a certain extent, behind the scenes. I saw no actual fighting so have not tried to describe it. The opinions expressed, and the comments made, are entirely my own, and derived from what I saw and heard. Much of what I heard came to me unofficially. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book African Kaiser written by Robert Gaudi and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incredible true account of World War I in Africa and General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, the last undefeated German commander. “Let me say straight out that if all military histories were as thrilling and well written as Robert Gaudi’s African Kaiser, I might give up reading fiction and literary biography… Gaudi writes with the flair of a latter-day Macaulay. He sets his scenes carefully and describes naval and military action like a novelist.”—Michael Dirda, The Washington Post As World War I ravaged the European continent, a completely different theater of war was being contested in Africa. And from this very different kind of war, there emerged a very different kind of military leader.... At the beginning of the twentieth century, the continent of Africa was a hotbed of international trade, colonialism, and political gamesmanship. So when World War I broke out, the European powers were forced to contend with one another not just in the bloody trenches, but in the treacherous jungle. And it was in that unforgiving land that General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck would make history. With the now-legendary Schutztruppe (Defensive Force), von Lettow-Vorbeck and a small cadre of hardened German officers fought alongside their fanatically devoted native African allies as equals, creating the first truly integrated army of the modern age. African Kaiser is the fascinating story of a forgotten guerrilla campaign in a remote corner of Equatorial Africa in World War I; of a small army of ultraloyal African troops led by a smaller cadre of rugged German officers—of white men and black who fought side by side. But mostly it is the story of von Lettow-Vorbeck—the only undefeated German commmander in the field during World War I and the last to surrender his arms.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the War in South Africa, 1899-1900 The war in South Africa has been no exception to the general rule that the origin of current events is to be sought in the history of the past, and their present course to be understood by an appreciation of existing conditions, which decisively control it This is especially true of the matter here before us; because the southern extreme of Africa, like to that of the American continent, has heretofore lain far outside of the common interest, and therefore of the accurate knowledge, of mankind at large.
