Book Community Crime Prevention Guidelines for California Law Enforcement

Download or read book Community Crime Prevention Guidelines for California Law Enforcement written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These guidelines provide law enforcement agencies with a framework of the basic elements necessary for the design, implementation, and evaluation of an effective community crime prevention program. The guidelines are applicable to all agencies regardless of size, geographic location, crime problems, etc. The guidelines prescribe a planning phase consisting of issuing a written policy directive from the chief administrator regarding the department's commitment to an active community crime prevention program; involving department personnel, community leaders and city administrators in developing the program; conducting a needs assessment; and establishing written goals for the community crime prevention program. Program preparation involves assigning a program director, providing orientation for all personnel, and developing written objectives and program goals. Community involvement approaches require utilizing the media, informing the public about local crime problems and the benefits of crime prevention programs, enlisting community participation in the program, and coordinating prevention activities with other agencies. The final evaluation phase must be a purposefully designed continuing process with monitoring of specific program activities. The appendixes contain forms and other sample material.

Book Punishment and Democracy

Download or read book Punishment and Democracy written by Franklin E. Zimring and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-02-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Getting tough on crime" has been one of the favorite rallying cries of American politicians in the last two decades, and "getting tough" on repeat offenders has been particularly popular. "Three strikes and you're out" laws, which effectively impose a 25-years-to-life sentence at the moment of a third felony conviction, have been passed in 26 states. California's version of the "three strikes" law, enacted in 1994, was broader and more severe than measures considered or passed in any other state. Punishment and Democracy is the first examination of the actual impact this law has had. Franklin Zimring, Sam Kamin, and Gordon Hawkins look at the origins of the law in California, compare it to other crackdown laws, and analyze the data collected on crime rates in Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco in the year before and the two years after the law went into effect. They show that the "three strikes" law was a significant development in criminal justice policy making, not only at the state level, but also at the national level. They conclude with an examination of the trend toward populist initiatives driving penal policy. The importance of the subject and the stature of the authors make this book required reading for policy analysts, criminal justice scholars, elected officials, and indeed any American seeking to know more about "get-tough" criminal sentencing.

Book Living in Fear in California

Download or read book Living in Fear in California written by Kerry Jackson and published by Pacific Research Institute. This book was released on 2019-04 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California was once a national leader in enacting tough-on-crime public safety protections such as Three Strikes and 10-20-Life. While controversial, these laws ensured justice for victims and safety for California's diverse communities. Years of prison overcrowding, followed by the appointment of a court-ordered prison receiver, led to a radical shift in policy in 2011 with the adoption of public safety realignment. Due to several questionable policy decisions in the Legislature and at the ballot box, many serious and repeat criminals now no longer serve time in state prison. Some receive a mere "slap on the wrist." In Living in Fear in California, Kerry Jackson explores California's current crime problem. Using government data and real-life anecdotes, he paints a portrait of California's crime problem in major cities, rural areas, schools, and communities where gangs openly operate. Jackson reviews the massive policy changes that have resulted in many Californians living in fear in their own homes. He also outlines several common-sense reforms to fix the major problems brought about by the state's public safety policy upheaval.

Book Criminal Justice Policy

Download or read book Criminal Justice Policy written by Stacy L. Mallicoat and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criminal Justice Policy provides a thematic overview of criminal justice policy and its relationship to the American criminal justice system. Scholars, practitioners, and politicians continually debate the value of these policies in their evaluations of the current system. As the nature of this subject involves a host of issues (including politics, public sentiment, research, and practice), the authors expertly highlight these concerns on criminal justice policy and address the implications for the overall system and society at large. This text is organized into three parts: Foundations of criminal justice policy focuses on the role of politics, best practices, and street level bureaucracy in criminal justice policy. Criminal justice policy in action provides an analysis of fifteen different policy issues in criminal justice, such as immigration, drugs, mental health and capital punishment. Each section begins with a basic summary of the policy, accompanied by a brief synopsis of the framing issues. This brief, but informative summary, draws students’ attention to essential concepts and ideas, provides a roadmap for what they can expect to learn, and ensures continuity throughout the text. The text concludes with a discussion about the future directions of criminal justice policy.
