Book Three Pearls of Number Theory

Download or read book Three Pearls of Number Theory written by A. Y. Khinchin and published by . This book was released on 2014-12-10 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2014 Reprint of Original 1952 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. The author, one of the leading Russian mathematicians of the post-war period, attempts to present three important results in number theory in such a way as to promote interest in the subject by showing that elementary number theory is not yet a finished field and that highly interesting new results can still be obtained by ingenious methods. These three puzzles involve the proof of a basic law governing the world of numbers known to be correct in all tested cases - the problem is to prove that the law is always correct. Includes van der Waerden's theorem on arithmetic progressions, the Landau-Schnirelmann hypothesis and Mann's theorem, and a solution to Waring's problem. Proofs and explanations of the answers are provided.

Download or read book De Motu and the Analyst written by G. Berkeley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berkeley's philosophy has been much studied and discussed over the years, and a growing number of scholars have come to the realization that scientific and mathematical writings are an essential part of his philosophical enterprise. The aim of this volume is to present Berkeley's two most important scientific texts in a form which meets contemporary standards of scholarship while rendering them accessible to the modern reader. Although editions of both are contained in the fourth volume of the Works, these lack adequate introductions and do not provide com plete and corrected texts. The present edition contains a complete and critically established text of both De Motu and The Analyst, in addi tion to a new translation of De Motu. The introductions and notes are designed to provide the background necessary for a full understanding of Berkeley's account of science and mathematics. Although these two texts are very different, they are united by a shared a concern with the work of Newton and Leibniz. Berkeley's De Motu deals extensively with Newton's Principia and Leibniz's Specimen Dynamicum, while The Analyst critiques both Leibnizian and Newto nian mathematics. Berkeley is commonly thought of as a successor to Locke or Malebranche, but as these works show he is also a successor to Newton and Leibniz.

Book Solved and Unsolved Problems in Number Theory

Download or read book Solved and Unsolved Problems in Number Theory written by Daniel Shanks and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2024-01-24 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation of three problems, perfect numbers, periodic decimals, and Pythagorean numbers, has given rise to much of elementary number theory. In this book, Daniel Shanks, past editor of Mathematics of Computation, shows how each result leads to further results and conjectures. The outcome is a most exciting and unusual treatment. This edition contains a new chapter presenting research done between 1962 and 1978, emphasizing results that were achieved with the help of computers.

Book Studies in Pure Mathematics

Download or read book Studies in Pure Mathematics written by ERDÖS and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, written by his friends, collaborators and students, is offered to the memory of Paul Tunin. Most of the papers they contributed discuss subjects related to his own fields of research. The wide range of topics reflects the versatility of his mathematical activity. His work has inspired many mathematicians in analytic number theory, theory of functions of a complex variable, interpolation and approximation theory, numerical algebra, differential equations, statistical group theory and theory of graphs. Beyond the influence of his deep and important results he had the exceptional ability to communicate to others his enthusiasm for mathematics. One of the strengths of Turan was to ask unusual questions that became starting points of many further results, sometimes opening up new fields of research. We hope that this volume will illustrate this aspect of his work adequately. Born in Budapest, on August 28, 1910, Paul Turan obtained his Ph. D. under L. Fejer in 1935. His love for mathematies enabled him to work even under inhuman circumstances during the darkest years of the Second World War. One of his major achievements, his power sum method originated in this period. After the war he was visiting professor in Denmark and in Princeton. In 1949 he became professor at the Eotvos Lorand University of Budapest, a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and a leading figure of the Hungarian mathematical community.
