Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beards—they’re all the rage these days. Take a look around: from hip urbanites to rustic outdoorsmen, well-groomed metrosexuals to post-season hockey players, facial hair is everywhere. The New York Times traces this hairy trend to Big Apple hipsters circa 2005 and reports that today some New Yorkers pay thousands of dollars for facial hair transplants to disguise patchy, juvenile beards. And in 2014, blogger Nicki Daniels excoriated bearded hipsters for turning a symbol of manliness and power into a flimsy fashion statement. The beard, she said, has turned into the padded bra of masculinity. Of Beards and Men makes the case that today’s bearded renaissance is part of a centuries-long cycle in which facial hairstyles have varied in response to changing ideals of masculinity. Christopher Oldstone-Moore explains that the clean-shaven face has been the default style throughout Western history—see Alexander the Great’s beardless face, for example, as the Greek heroic ideal. But the primacy of razors has been challenged over the years by four great bearded movements, beginning with Hadrian in the second century and stretching to today’s bristled resurgence. The clean-shaven face today, Oldstone-Moore says, has come to signify a virtuous and sociable man, whereas the beard marks someone as self-reliant and unconventional. History, then, has established specific meanings for facial hair, which both inspire and constrain a man’s choices in how he presents himself to the world. This fascinating and erudite history of facial hair cracks the masculine hair code, shedding light on the choices men make as they shape the hair on their faces. Oldstone-Moore adeptly lays to rest common misperceptions about beards and vividly illustrates the connection between grooming, identity, culture, and masculinity. To a surprising degree, we find, the history of men is written on their faces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cult classic and collector’s item, Dali’s Mustache is the result of the astonishing artistic collaboration between surrealist Salvador Dalí and experimental photography pioneer Philippe Halsman. Dalí and Halsman were friends as well as professional collaborators for more than three decades. Subtitled A Photographic Interview, the concept of the book is one short question presented to Dalí, which Dalí answers, followed by a corresponding black-and-white photograph by Halsman. The photographs are intentionally absurd and hilarious. Early editions of this book came with a warning on the back that said “Warning! This book is preposterous.” Question: "I have the feeling, to have discovered your secret, Salvador. Could it be that you are crazy?" Answer: "I am certainly saner than the person who bought this book."

He is the senior forklift driver at Marr Freight in the flyover country city of Middleton. He has also lived the longest at the upscale Richland Townhomes apartments, in which he resides in apartment four, and which is located in one of Middleton's better suburbs. Larry has been divorced for many years, and has finally become comfortable with his single late middle-aged life. Everything seems set, and he seems to be set in his ways, until someone comes along to change all of that. Brandy Ames is a perky twenty-six. She is the recently hired receptionist at DCH Associates, PA, one of Middleton's most prestigious law firms. Brandy has become frustrated with the selfish ways of her current boyfriend, and has already decided to move out of his house. Anticipating a complete break with both her boyfriend and her recent past of troubles, she applies for and obtains a lease for apartment three at the Richland Townhomes, which is currently empty. She has no idea that her life is about to change as much as that of the new neighbor she is going to have next door. The wind of the autumn spring descends upon both Larry and Brandy when they first meet, and they are soon caught in its wonderful embrace. Both quickly discover that they have a lot in common despite their differences in age, and both quickly develop first a close friendship and then a traditional romance that follows the old-fashioned lines that Larry prefers and Brandy quickly comes to appreciate. As they come together first as friends and then as a couple, both know that their lives are never going to be the same, thanks to the blessing both have been granted by the breath of the autumn spring.

Book excerpt: Joseph Souza, acclaimed author of The Neighbor, brings readers into the dark heart of a small town in this riveting, relentlessly twisting new novel . . . Lucy Abbott never pictured herself coming back to Fawn Grove, Maine. Yet after serving time in Afghanistan, then years spent as a sous chef in New York, she’s realized her only hope of moving on from the past involves facing it again. But Fawn Grove, like Lucy herself, has changed. Lucy’s sister, Wendy, is eager to help her adapt, almost stifling her with concern. At the local diner, Lucy is an exotic curiosity—much like the refugees who’ve arrived in recent years. When a fifteen-year-old Muslim girl is found murdered along the banks of the river, difficult memories of Lucy’s time overseas come flooding back and she feels an automatic connection. At first glance, the tragedy looks like an honor killing. But the more Lucy learns about her old hometown, the less certain that seems. There is menace and hostility here, clothed in neighborly smiles and a veneer of comfort. And when another teen is found dead in a cornfield, his throat slit, Lucy—who knows something about hiding secrets—must confront a truth more brutal than she could have imagined, in the last place she expected it . . . “Delivers one devilish twist after another, pulling you into the story and never letting go. A tightly paced suspense drawn with compellingly real characters, Souza’s newest domestic thriller is a genre-defining tour-de-force.” —Steve Konkoly
