Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlemagne: Or Romance of the Middle Ages One of Thomas Bulfinch's books, in which he sought to clear a way into the great and entrancing jungle of the earlier ages, has already appeared in this series.1 He had a distinct feeling for the needs of Everyman and of those who like himself had to give most of their days to commerce, for he sat at the desk of the accountant and the bank-clerk through all his long life. He was born at Boston in 1796, went to school there and to Harvard University, lived on through the days when Emerson, Hawthorne, and Longfellow were coming and going in that city, spent the last thirty years of his life as a clerk in the Boston Merchants' Bank, and died in 1867. The American Civil War befell during his last decade, and he saw manyphanges but his chief events were books, and the exploits of Charlemagne engaged him at the very time when North and South were at their mortal struggle. It is no easy thing to condense a whole confused literature into a single volume, as he did in the case of the romances and histories of Charle magne; and when he did it, he had not at command as we have now the eleven or twelve volumes of the English Charlemagne Romances published by the Early English Text Society. His book is on the face of it a kind of primer, meant to induct its readers into the region of Orlando, Rinaldo, Astolfo, the brave revolter Ogier the Dane, and Malagigi the Enchanter. Presently it is hoped to add to Everyman's Library one or more of the actual romances; and meanwhile this book will serve to arouse an interest in the world whose threshold was lit with the morning sun. Book Words that Tear the Flesh

Download or read book Words that Tear the Flesh written by Stephen Alan Baragona and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rhetorical trope of irony is well-trod territory, with books and essays devoted to its use by a wide range of medieval and Renaissance writers, from the Beowulf-poet and Chaucer to Boccaccio and Shakespeare; however, the use of sarcasm, the "flesh tearing" form of irony, in the same literature has seldom been studied at length or in depth. Sarcasm is notoriously difficult to pick out in a written text, since it relies so much on tone of voice and context. This is the first book-length study of medieval and Renaissance sarcasm. Its fourteen essays treat instances in a range of genres, both sacred and secular, and of cultures from Anglo-Saxon to Arabic, where the combination of circumstance and word choice makes it absolutely clear that the speaker, whether a character or a narrator, is being sarcastic. Essays address, among other things, the clues writers give that sarcasm is at work, how it conforms to or deviates from contemporary rhetorical theories, what role it plays in building character or theme, and how sarcasm conforms to the Christian milieu of medieval Europe, and beyond to medieval Arabic literature. The collection thus illuminates a half-hidden but surprisingly common early literary technique for modern readers.

Book Narrating the Crusades

Download or read book Narrating the Crusades written by Lee Manion and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Narrating the Crusades, Lee Manion examines crusading's narrative-generating power as it is reflected in English literature from c.1300 to 1604. By synthesizing key features of crusade discourse into one paradigm, this book identifies and analyzes the kinds of stories crusading produced in England, uncovering new evidence for literary and historical research as well as genre studies. Surveying medieval romances including Richard Cœur de Lion, Sir Isumbras, Octavian, and The Sowdone of Babylone alongside historical practices, chronicles, and treatises, this study shows how different forms of crusading literature address cultural concerns about collective and private action. These insights extend to early modern writing, including Spenser's Faerie Queene, Marlowe's Tamburlaine, and Shakespeare's Othello, providing a richer understanding of how crusading's narrative shaped the beginning of the modern era. This first full-length examination of English crusading literature will be an essential resource for the study of crusading in literary and historical contexts.

Book The Language of Heresy in Late Medieval English Literature

Download or read book The Language of Heresy in Late Medieval English Literature written by Erin K. Wagner and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-04-22 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vernacular writers of late medieval England were engaged in global conversations about orthodoxy and heresy. Entering these conversations with a developing vernacular required lexical innovation. The Language of Heresy in Late Medieval English Literature examines the way in which these writers complemented seemingly straightforward terms, like heretic, with a range of synonyms that complicated the definitions of both those words and orthodoxy itself. This text proposes four specific terms that become collated with heretic in the parlance of medieval English writers of the 14th and 15th centuries: jangler, Jew, Saracen, and witch. These four labels are especially important insofar as they represent the way in which medieval Christianity appropriated and subverted marginalized or vulnerable identities to promote a false image of unassailable authority.
