Book Three Masks of the Japanese Mountain God

Download or read book Three Masks of the Japanese Mountain God written by John Foster and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-04-24 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three masks of the Japanese mountain god are given definition by the land and its memory and how these in myth and myth-acting in festivals help provide a model for character. The oldest of the masks pertains to passage into the mountains for purposes of skillful action such as hunting; the second mask is associated with sacred space and by extension protection of kinship groups and ancestor relations; the third mask is linked to the social environment of rice farming, which came to help model behavior related to rice and human fertility as well as what it means to be a good member of the extended kinship group. These are the three masks of the Japanese mountain god. This book is about these ancient Japanese myths. It is about their meaning, their history and their fate in the modern world. It is a book intended for non-specialists who are interested in Japanese religion and culture and those interested in how myth has been applied to solving problems historically and in ultramodern Japan.

Book Japanese Prehistory

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nelly Naumann
  • Publisher : Otto Harrassowitz Verlag
  • Release : 2000
  • ISBN : 9783447043298
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book Japanese Prehistory written by Nelly Naumann and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2000 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existing literature on Japanese prehistory is mostly focussed on describing material culture; this new study surveys the early artifacts and shows that they were either neglected in previous studies or reported of by unfounded and fantastic speculation. The author identifies prehistoric ideas concerning hunting and fishing, the cult of the dead, and the after-life. The cosmological implications of burial topography and stone-circles are as well examined as older written texts from other parts of the world aiding in elucidating the symbols recognized on these remains. This helps to link the Jo-mon materials to other remains of similar or older age from the ancient Near East, China, the Pacific, and ancient America and proves that prehistoric Japan was never really isolated from the rest of the world. Although the method developed in this study, which rejects speculation and bases itself entirely on archaeological remains, permits only the elucidation of a part of the rich spiritual culture of prehistoric Japan; it reveals an abundance of new information concerning the most important religious ideas of mankind: the constant renewal of life, and the belief that death is not the ultimate end.

Book Creating Circles and Ceremonies

Download or read book Creating Circles and Ceremonies written by Oberon Zell-Ravenheart and published by Red Wheel/Weiser. This book was released on 2006-07-07 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating Circles and Ceremonies is the accumulation of decades of circles, ceremonies, rituals, Mystery plays, initiations, rites of passage, and other magickal workings co-created by the Zell-Ravenhearts, today's foremost Wizard/Witch couple. For more than 30 years, Oberon and Morning Glory have traveled widely throughout the worldwide magickal community--participating in gatherings, conducting workshops, and creating rituals for groups large and small. They have met and made Magick with the leaders of many traditions: Celtic Shamanism, British Dianic, Italian Strega, Welsh Witchcraft, Faerie Trad, Ceremonial Magick, Ozark Druidry, the New Reformed Order of the Golden Dawn (NROOGD), Hinduism, Native American tribes, Greek and Egyptian mythology, and the futuristic Church of All Worlds. Here, in one easy-to-read volume, is their collection of chants, invocations, circle-castings, quarter-callings, spells, and ceremonies. It is also a "kit" to use to assemble your own rituals, for any season or reason: Book I presents a basic ritual outline. Each element is followed by numerous examples which may be "plugged in" to customize your own ceremony. Book II gives numerous examples of actual ceremonies: Esbats (full Moons) and special occasions; Rites of Passage; Mysteries and Initiations; spells and consecrations. These can be adapted and modified as needed for any size group--from small family gatherings in your living room, to huge outdoor celebrations involving thousands of people. Book III provides an assortment of full rituals and ritual elements for celebrations of the eight great seasonal festivals called the Wheel of the Year. Versions of these have been commemorated for millennia in most traditional cultures of the Northern Hemisphere; and today are universal throughout the worldwide Pagan community.

Book Astonishment and Evocation

Download or read book Astonishment and Evocation written by Ivo Strecker and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All societies are shaped by arts, media, and other persuasive practices that can awe, captivate, enchant or otherwise seem to cast a spell on the audience. Likewise, scholarship itself often is driven by a sense of wonder and a willingness to be open to what lies beyond the obvious. This book broadens and deepens this perspective. Inspired by Stephen Tyler’s view of ethnography as an art of evocation, international scholars from the fields of aesthetics, anthropology, and rhetoric explore the spellbinding power of elusive meanings as people experience them in daily life and while gazing at works of art, watching films or studying other cultures. The book is divided into three parts covering the evocative power of visual art, the immersion in ritual and performance, and the reading, writing, and interpretation of texts. Taken as a whole, the contributions to the book demonstrate how astonishment and evocation deserve an important place in the conceptual repertoire of the human sciences.

Book The Way of the Living Sword

Download or read book The Way of the Living Sword written by Yagyu Munenori and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-08 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Way of the Living Sword is the final installment in D.E. Tarver's popular Warrior Series. It stands beside The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi as one of the greatest writings of the warrior mind. In The Way of the Living Sword, Munenori gives an in-depth explanation of the connection between physical martial arts and the mental process of Zen. While Munenori and Musashi were both avid students of Zen, Munenori was more fascinated by the academic aspects of the philosophy. Munenori stretches the consciousness of even the most enlightened martial artist. Martial arts devotees will experience many flashes of revelation as Tarver explores the various aspects of Munenori's approach. Read and grow!
