Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Endura, or Three Generations: A New England Romance The author conceived the idea of making a rascal, unwittingly, furnish the sin ews of war, with the full hope and expectation of enjoying the fortune, as the result which was accomplished, according to the following story, would never have been reached if a great many heirs had been interested and consulted. It was a great stake for a gambler to play for, and, had not Providence interfered, he might have won. Such an accident as the friend of the family's discovering the fraud, could easily have happened. But it was a great question with the author, as to whether the lawyers who had the case in charge, having received retaining fees and large amounts of money from time to time, could honorably abandon his interests, even though the conviction was forced upon them that he was an impostor. The author consulted a number of able attorneys upon the subject, whose opinions differed greatly. And there appeared to be no better way out of the dilemma than that the impostor, himself, should be put out of the way; and nothing was more natural than that his accomplice should be the one to make way with him, when said accomplice became convinced that he had been robbed and fooled by the cunning rascal. Book Gender Fantasy and Realism in American Literature

Download or read book Gender Fantasy and Realism in American Literature written by Alfred Habegger and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of the 19th-century American novel, the author demonstrates the imaginative continuity between sentimental and realistic fiction and sets out to establish that realism is the central and preeminent literary type in America, a mode grounded in the tradition of women's popular fiction which shaped the nation's reading habits in the mid-19th century. He examines this feminine literature, with its common technique of symbolizing deeper social conflicts through patterns of courtship, marriage, and gender roles. Contends that Howells and James owe much of their fictional domain to the often-disparaged household dramas of these female precursors.

This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 2385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American poet and essayist Louise Imogen Guiney was a prominent figure of the Boston literary circle of her day. She is chiefly known for her lyrical, Old English-style poems, recalling the conventions of seventeenth-century poetry. Informed by her religious faith, Guiney's works exhibit a concern for the Catholic tradition, while emphasising moral rectitude and heroic gallantry. By the end of the nineteenth century, Guiney was regarded as a major contributor to American literature. In later years, she turned to scholarship, concentrating on neglected poets. The Delphi Poets Series offers readers the works of literature’s finest poets, with superior formatting.
