Book excerpt: with a memoir by William S. Heckscher Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968) was one of the preeminent art historians of the twentieth century. A new translation of his seminal work, Perspective as Symbolic Form, was recently published by Zone Books; now three remarkable essays, one previously unpublished, place Panofsky's genius in a different perspective: What Is Baroque?, Style and Medium in the Motion Pictures,andThe Ideological Antecedents of the Rolls-Royce Radiator. The essays are framed by an introduction by Irving Lavin, Panofsky's successor as Professor of Art History at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, discussing the context of the essays' composition and their significance within Panofsky's oeuvre, and an insightful memoir by Panofsky's former student, close friend, and fellow emigr & e ́, William Heckscher. All three essays reveal unexpected aspects of Panofsky's sensibility, both personal and intellectual. Originally written as lectures for general audiences, they are composed in a lively, informal manner, and are full of charm and wit. The studies concern broadly defined problems of style in art--the visual symptoms endemic to works of a certain period (Baroque), medium (film), or national identity (England)--as opposed to the focus on iconography and subject matter usually associated with Panofsky's "method." The essay on Baroque, which Lavin considers "vintage Panofsky" and which appears here for the first time, and the one on film were written in 1934. The Rolls-Royce piece was written in 1962.

Book excerpt: Researchers have been increasingly interested in the phenomenon of social networks in education, a research area that provides more opportunities to study the relationships among individuals or organizations in our educational system. The goal of this dissertation was to understand the effect of various social networks on outcomes by investigating various relationships in the educational system. To achieve the goal, three distinct, but related, essays comprised this dissertation. In the first essay, I examined the effects of interschool networks on student achievement. By using the data collected from the High Impact Leadership (HIL) program and employing the hierarchical linear model (HLM) method, I investigated how different interschool relationships, indicated by various interschool network measures, were associated with student mathematics and reading achievement, and the growth of student mathematics and reading achievement. Key findings included (a) schools that reported to have a stronger relationship with other schools had better, and more growth in, mathematics achievement; (b) schools with reciprocal relationships had better, and more growth in, mathematics and reading achievement; and (c) schools connected to more influential schools in the network had better, and more growth in, mathematics and reading achievement. In the second essay, I inquired into the relationship between teacher-to-teacher relationships and student achievement. By using the meta-analysis method, I specifically focused on (a) the relationship between teacher's individual relationship with other teachers and student mathematics and reading achievement; (b) the relationship between teacher-to-teacher relationship at the organization level (i.e., school or grade team) and student mathematics and reading achievement; and (c) how three frequently used theoretical frameworks in studying teacher-to-teacher relationships--teacher network, teacher collaboration and professional learning community (PLC), at either individual or organizational level--were related to student mathematics and reading achievement. Key findings included (a) teachers' individual relationships were not related to student achievement; (b) the relationships in schools or grade teams were significantly positively related to student mathematics and reading achievement; and (c) at the organizational level, different theoretical frameworks were not related to the level of student achievement, but did result in different levels of heterogeneity (i.e., heterogeneity was low for PLCs and teacher networks and was high for teach collaborations). In the third essay, I conducted a meta-analysis study on the relationship between (a) principals' network position in school-wide networks, measured by principals' degree centrality, and (b) school leadership, trust and innovation climate. I found that principals' network position had a strong positive relationship with leadership climate and a moderate relationship with trust and innovation climate, with low to moderate level of heterogeneity. The findings in the three essays have implications for policy, practice, and research. From the perspectives of policy and practice, generally speaking social networks in education are associated with better outcomes, and should be promoted in the educational system. Social networks appear to be an important vehicle to improve outcomes in the context of the bifurcated educational system. Directions for future research were also discussed.

Following a questionable logic that sees education as a means to economic ends, efforts to reform education have focused on keeping the US from slipping in international economic competition. Relying on testing as a standard, in the end we may have decreased our human potential and become less competitive. Our system has gotten worse at its core, in its philosophical tenets and in its ultimate effects, by placing unwonted pressure on our youth and in stifling their creativity. While this goes back decades, Respect for Teachers takes its title from a phrase --perhaps a codeword-- in President's 2011 State of the Union address and sits down to consider its implications. Connecting attacks on teachers, unions and schools and the misrepresentation of research to the promotion of new economic models in education, it suggests that the Obama administration may be, without quite realizing it, setting the stage for rapid privatization of the public system. Book excerpt: This dissertation comprises three essays that explore the locus of learning and innovation in organizations and their environments, and the resulting impact on firm strategy. The first essay examines how firms can learn from a diverse set of sources. The returns to social learning are expected to be low in contexts rife with interdependencies, where practices from one context may be incompatible with those from another. Using a computational simulation, this essay shows that centralized social learning proves surprisingly robust to this challenge, and that to resolve it, firms should counterintuitively double down on social learning. The second essay examines how firms can leverage the market for systemic innovation. This is a task typically understood to be best accomplished through vertical integration, where the firm can easily explore alternative resource combinations. However, using a qualitative archival analysis of an opera company and a computational simulation, this paper shows that specialized producers' reputational concerns lead them to undertake systemic innovation, the value of which a firm can in fact undercut by trying to vertically integrate. The third essay examines how firms should take audience learning into account during experimentation. While firm learning calls for its experiments to be conducted as separately as possible from their core activities, audience learning (especially in cultural markets) often necessitates their integration in order to properly value an innovation. This essay uses a qualitative archival analysis of a ballet company to elucidate the challenge this creates for experimentation, and how firms can address this by strategically choosing their audience, and periodically replacing their experimentation units.

Girls also derive more intrinsic gratification from performing well on a day-to-day basis, a crucial advantage in the learning process. By contrast, boys must often navigate a conflict between their emerging masculine identity and a strong attachment to school. Families and peers play a crucial role at this juncture. The authors show the gender gap in educational attainment between children in the same families tends to be lower when the father is present and more highly educated. A strong academic climate, both among friends and at home, also tends to erode stereotypes that disconnect academic prowess and a healthy, masculine identity. Similarly, high schools with strong science curricula reduce the power of gender stereotypes concerning science and technology and encourage girls to major in scientific fields. As the value of a highly skilled workforce continues to grow, The Rise of Women argues that understanding the source and extent of the gender gap in higher education is essential to improving our schools and the economy. With its rigorous data and clear recommendations, this volume illuminates new ground for future education policies and research.
