Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital technologies' emergence has changed firms' innovation and entrepreneurship activities significantly. While the prior literature has investigated how digital technologies stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship, the challenges of the digital transformation process have received limited attention in the information systems (IS) literature. This dissertation aims to examine these challenges by studying policies and governance in the fields of intellectual property, data privacy, and digital infrastructure. In the first essay, I argue that the inefficient protection of employees' intellectual property rights hampers their innovation activities at work. The second essay evaluates data privacy regulations' impact on mobile app entrepreneurship. The third essay investigates how mobile platforms' open policy impedes the adoption of innovative features in operating system (OS) updates. These three essays provide theoretical contributions to the literature on digital transformation, innovation, and entrepreneurship. They also offer practical insights for policymakers and digital infrastructure professionals about how to address digital transformation challenges in innovation and entrepreneurship.

Book How Business Started

Download or read book How Business Started written by Peter Seidler and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2013 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three essays are the result of my research into the origins of economic thought and entrepreneurship. In undertaking this work, I found out more about the role economic action - in which I have taken an active part since fifty -years - plays in determining the prosperity of a society. I was moved by four questions, in particular: - Why is property a necessity? - Skills and emancipation of individuals - Behaviour and organisation of groups - How can socialism work? Action should be influenced by ethical foundations of economics und business. Important principles include responsibility, efficiency and subsidiarity. Coupled with the principle of freedom and the pursuit of technical progress, their implementation can lead a competing community to great prosperity, which then helps to solve the social problem of underprivileged minorities through self-help. The book begins by investigating the spiritual and economic conditions that paved the way for the industrial revolution in the High Middle Ages. The next section demonstrates that no wealth can be achieved without legal certainty. This is followed by an account of the agricultural region of Catalonia at the Mediterranean foot of the Pyrenees, which opened up to the world around the year 1000 and proceeded to gain a modest degree of prosperity. An economy that spanned Christianity and Islam shows signs of globalisation.

Download or read book Entrepreneurial Search Innovation and Initiative written by Xiaoming Yang and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the lean startup model, network theory, institutional theory, learning theory, and symbiosis view, this dissertation examines three important issues of entrepreneurship. This dissertation consists of three essays, each focusing on one specific aspect of entrepreneurship, namely: stage, network, and subsidiary initiative. Based on the lean startup model, the first essay focuses on the development processes of startups and the dominant cognition an entrepreneur might use at each stage. The second essay proposes an appropriateness perspective to examine the optimal configuration of network characteristics, learning experience, and legal environment that is most conducive to innovation performance. The third essay focuses on the relationship between informal institutional distance and subsidiary initiatives, investigating how the trust between headquarters and subsidiary mediates the relationship and how communication effectiveness moderates such relationship. As a whole, these three essays address important questions of entrepreneurship at different levels.

Book The Effect of Technological Complexity on Innovation Performance Employee Entrepreneurship and Mobility Three Essays

Download or read book The Effect of Technological Complexity on Innovation Performance Employee Entrepreneurship and Mobility Three Essays written by Martin Ganco and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technological innovation, knowledge diffusion and employee entrepreneurship and mobility are closely related phenomena. Multiple literature streams in strategy, entrepreneurship and technology management focus on explaining them. However, relatively little is known about the micro-level variation in technological tasks as their driver. To improve our understanding of the role technology plays in these phenomena, I examine how the complexity of the technological problems that employees solve affects innovation performance and employees0́9 choices about entrepreneurship and mobility. In essay 1 I examine whether modeling the innovative process as an iterative and adaptive search of boundedly rational agents is a valid approach. I develop a novel measure of technological complexity and empirically analyze how technological complexity affects innovation performance. In essay 2 I develop a model connecting attributes of technological tasks with the probability of idea rejection within incumbent firms. I show that rejection of profitable ideas within incumbent firms may occur without asymmetric information, incomplete contracts or resource constraints. In essay 3 I look at how technological complexity affects decisions to engage in employee entrepreneurship and mobility within the context of the U.S. semiconductor industry. The dissertation highlights a new driver of innovation patterns, knowledge flows and employee entrepreneurship and mobility with implications for firm performance and competitive dynamics.

Book Three Essays on Enabling Entrepreneurial Growth in Low Income Economies

Download or read book Three Essays on Enabling Entrepreneurial Growth in Low Income Economies written by Natalie Carlson and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While entrepreneurship is frequently touted as an engine for macroeconomic growth, and there is increasing policy interest in promoting entrepreneurship in lower-income countries, aspiring entrepreneurs in developing regions face unique constraints on their ability to grow successful businesses. This dissertation contains three empirical essays studying the factors that enable and constrain entrepreneurial growth in low-income contexts, drawing on data from a randomized field experiment studying an entrepreneurial training program in Zimbabwe. The first essay examines how entrepreneurial training impacts key hinge decisions on whether to continue pursuing an initial business idea, or to pivot to a new opportunity. The second essay studies how entrepreneurial training impacts subjective well-being, and the reasons why it might not track neatly with economic outcomes. The third essay studies innovation in the context of small informal enterprises, using text-based machine learning methods.
