This book was released on 2016 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of whether and how firms learn continues to fuel debate amongst strategic management scholars. Within its answer lies the potential for identifying and capitalizing upon valuable drivers of firm performance advantage. In this dissertation, I take aim at this question by investigating the viability and efficacy of three different learning processes in the context of corporate divestiture. This approach not only permits a comprehensive examination of firm learning, but also affords the opportunity to advance our understanding of a heretofore understudied, but important, mode of corporate development.

Book Three Essays on Organizational Learning in Multibusiness Firms

Download or read book Three Essays on Organizational Learning in Multibusiness Firms written by Zhi Cao and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, I examine the process and consequence of organizational learning in multibusiness firms by developing three interrelated empirical essays. In essay 1, I examine how multibusiness firms respond to social and historical performance comparison by internal and external restructuring, operationalized as business unit recombination and acquisition of external units or firms respectively. I build a theory on when multibusiness firms are more likely to rely on recombination to respond to performance feedback by highlighting the roles of the opportunity to restructure internally. In essay 2, I shift attention to examine how multibusiness firms respond to internal performance comparison between business units. I argue that multibusiness firms have two tendencies to respond to internal performance comparison-problem solving and winner rewarding. I also identify the conditions under which multibusiness firms are more problem solving or winner rewarding to respond to internal performance comparison. I highlight the roles of the business units' attention capturing and the multibusiness firms' risk aversion that jointly determine multibusiness firms' problem solving and winner rewarding tendencies. In essay 3, I investigate the influence of pre-entry learning on the performance of new entrants. This essay is the first step of my inquiry of how learning in multibusiness firms influences industry evolution and entrepreneurship. Focusing on the experience accumulated via learning before entry, I examine the relationship between pre-entry experience and new venture performance by conducting a meta-analysis.

Book Essays on the Locus of Learning and Innovation

Download or read book Essays on the Locus of Learning and Innovation written by Carolyn Jiaming Fu and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation comprises three essays that explore the locus of learning and innovation in organizations and their environments, and the resulting impact on firm strategy. The first essay examines how firms can learn from a diverse set of sources. The returns to social learning are expected to be low in contexts rife with interdependencies, where practices from one context may be incompatible with those from another. Using a computational simulation, this essay shows that centralized social learning proves surprisingly robust to this challenge, and that to resolve it, firms should counterintuitively double down on social learning. The second essay examines how firms can leverage the market for systemic innovation. This is a task typically understood to be best accomplished through vertical integration, where the firm can easily explore alternative resource combinations. However, using a qualitative archival analysis of an opera company and a computational simulation, this paper shows that specialized producers' reputational concerns lead them to undertake systemic innovation, the value of which a firm can in fact undercut by trying to vertically integrate. The third essay examines how firms should take audience learning into account during experimentation. While firm learning calls for its experiments to be conducted as separately as possible from their core activities, audience learning (especially in cultural markets) often necessitates their integration in order to properly value an innovation. This essay uses a qualitative archival analysis of a ballet company to elucidate the challenge this creates for experimentation, and how firms can address this by strategically choosing their audience, and periodically replacing their experimentation units.

Book Three Essays in Financial Markets The Bright Side of Financial Derivatives Options Trading and Firm Innovation

Download or read book Three Essays in Financial Markets The Bright Side of Financial Derivatives Options Trading and Firm Innovation written by Iván Blanco and published by Ed. Universidad de Cantabria. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do financial derivatives enhance or impede innovation? We aim to answer this question by examining the relationship between equity options markets and standard measures of firm innovation. Our baseline results show that firms with more options trading activity generate more patents and patent citations per dollar of R&D invested. We then investigate how more active options markets affect firms' innovation strategy. Our results suggest that firms with greater trading activity pursue a more creative, diverse and risky innovation strategy. We discuss potential underlying mechanisms and show that options appear to mitigate managerial career concerns that would induce managers to take actions that boost short-term performance measures. Finally, using several econometric specifications that try to account for the potential endogeneity of options trading, we argue that the positive effect of options trading on firm innovation is causal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the mysterious powers and forces peculiar to both individual and community that can turn our lives into either good or bad lives, I wish to point to two such powers being at the same time different in their own nature and yet closely related to each other: The powers that emerge from exemplary persons and leaders. Understood as basic to both sociology and the philosophy of history, it comes to us as no surprise that the problem of exemplary persons and leaders - along with the questions of the qualities types, selections and education of leaders; forms of unison existing be tween leaders and their followers, all of which belonging to the subdivisions of this problem - must be a burning problem for a people whose historical leaders from all walks of life have, in part, been swept away by wars and revolutions. This fact we also find in all salient epochs of history characterized more or less by changes in leadership. It is precisely for this reason that in our own time every group appears to struggle ever so hard with this problem, namely, who their leaders should be. This pertains equally to a group within a party, to a class, to occupations, to unions, to various schools or present-day youth movements, and even to religious and ecclesias tical groupings. Beyond any comparison, there is yearning everywhere for lead ership.

Book Three Essays on Productivity RLE Business Cycles

Download or read book Three Essays on Productivity RLE Business Cycles written by Mark J. Lasky and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-27 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behaviour of US productivity since this book was originally publishedin 1994, has added new relevance to the relationship between profits and productivity. In the long run, productivity growth determines the economic standard of living. This book is divided into three parts: the basis of the first is the empirical finding that, controlling for normal business cycle effects, productivity grows faster when profits have been low than otherwise. The second part discusses how to measure marginal cost using time series data and the third tests a basic assumption that productivity growth is exogenous to labour and capital.
