Download or read book On Global Linkages of Economies and Economic Integration in Latin America written by Hem C. Basnet and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the fast pace of globalization, interdependence among economies is accelerating across the globe. Consequently, the economic and financial linkages between countries around the world are deepening more and more. Similarly, economic cooperation and policy coordination have been guiding principles to the policy makers, financial agents, and trade partners alike. Information flows from one corner of the world to another just in the blink of an eye. A small disturbance in USA for instance can create ripples and tides at the same time all over the world. The European integration has been a successful and an iconic example of economic integration in other regions. This dissertation consists of three essays. The first essay investigates the transmission of US and Euro area shocks to emerging market economies by analyzing their influences on real and monetary sectors. The second essay investigates the feasibility of economic integration in Latin America by considering the seven largest economies in the region i.e. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela. Lastly, the third essay examines the role of exchange rates dynamics in Latin American countries considered in the second essay.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hofman, a researcher with the Chile-based Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, uses growth accounting methods and previously unavailable long-term series data to assess the economic performance of the region during the century from a comparative and historical perspective. In particular he compares Latin American economies to those of advanced capitalist economies, to newly industrialized economies, and to Spain and Portugal because of the historical ties. He looks at the reasons for the poor or negative growth during the 1980s and the apparent recovery in the 1990s and at such problems as debt, income inequality, high inflation, cyclical instability, and political and policy instability. Book Regional Integration in Latin America and the Caribbean

Download or read book Regional Integration in Latin America and the Caribbean written by V. Bulmer-Thomas and published by University of London Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is a sober assessment of the state of regional integration in Latin America and the Caribbean. It studies the question from four perspectives: economic, institutional, political, and in relation to the rest of the world. It considers the questions raised by LAC countries' efforts to use 'new' regionalism to address the challenges of globalization and to explore the nature and meaning of open regionalism. This thematic treatment draws on the experience of the different schemes currently in place in the region: NAFTA, CACM, CARICOM, the Andean Community and MERCOSUR. It also examines the nature of globalization, including concerns over the relationship between regionalism and the multilateral system. There is now a broad consensus among LAC countries that regional integration can help them adjust to the new world order, but there is much less agreement on how to achieve it and what reforms are needed to bring it about.

It contains six essays, focused on salient and cross-cutting themes, that try to construct a thread or narrative about the highly diverse region, highlighting its main idiosyncrasies and analyzing where it might be headed in coming years. While the essays recognize considerable advances, they also point out setbacks and missed opportunities that have stood in the way of sustained progress. Strengthening state capacity emerges as a significant challenge.
