Book Volumetric Three Dimensional Display Systems

Download or read book Volumetric Three Dimensional Display Systems written by Barry G. Blundell and published by Wiley-IEEE Press. This book was released on 2000-03-17 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive study of approaches to three-dimensional visualization by volumetric display systems This groundbreaking volume provides an unbiased and in-depth discussion on a broad range of volumetric three-dimensional display systems. It examines the history, development, design, and future of these displays, and considers their potential for application to key areas in which visualization plays a major role. Drawing substantially on material that was previously unpublished or available only in patent form, the authors establish the first comprehensive technical and mathematical formalization of the field, and examine a number of different volumetric architectures. System level design strategies are presented, from which proposals for the next generation of high-definition predictable volumetric systems are developed. To ensure that researchers will benefit from work already completed, they provide: * Descriptions of several recent volumetric display systems prepared from material supplied by the teams that created them * An abstract volumetric display system design paradigm * An historical summary of 90 years of development in volumetric display system technology * An assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of many of the systems proposed to date * A unified presentation of the underlying principles of volumetric display systems * A comprehensive bibliography Beautifully supplemented with 17 color plates that illustrate volumetric images and prototype displays, Volumetric Three-Dimensional Display Systems is an indispensable resource for professionals in imaging systems development, scientific visualization, medical imaging, computer graphics, aerospace, military planning, and CAD/CAE.

Book excerpt: Three dimensional (3D) displays are part of a growing market. These 3D displays are often seen in home entertainment and film industries. The most common three dimensional techniques require the use of glasses with special lenses to add the effect of "depth" in an animation. This project attempts to prove that a true three dimensional display can be made using low cost and accessible materials. The display is made from 625 Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) on a Peggy 2LE LED matrix display. The Peggy 2LE board is spun around 15 Hz and held tight between two cylindrical bearings. Blender, an open source animation software, in tandem with Mathematica, a technical computing application, was used to convert three dimensional animation objects into a precise sequence of LED flashes. The sequence of abrupt LED flashes over the sweeping volume of the LED matrix created the appearance of a true three dimensional object. The three dimensional display created in this project had almost no loss of occlusion, enabling the display to be viewed with near perfect perspective at all angles without the need of special glasses. This report will include an introduction explaining how volumetric displays work as well as what other 3D technologies exist today. Then a generalized methodology explaining how the project was put together and finally the results of the project will be discussed.

Book Volumetric Display Unabridged Guide

Download or read book Volumetric Display Unabridged Guide written by Gary Gonzales and published by Tebbo. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complete, Unabridged Guide to Volumetric display. Get the information you need--fast! This comprehensive guide offers a thorough view of key knowledge and detailed insight. It's all you need. Here's part of the content - you would like to know it all? Delve into this book today!..... : Three-dimensional imagery is perceived due to persistence of vision, in that a collection of voxels is projected at different locations within the volume over a time period such as 1/30 sec; they are visually integrated into one reconstructed 3-D scene. ...For example, a standard 24 bits per pixel, 1024x768 resolution, flat/2D display requires about 135 MB/s to be sent to the display hardware to sustain 60 frames per second, whereas a 24 bits per voxel, 1024x768x1024 (1024 pixel layers in the Z axis) volumetric display would need to send about three orders of magnitude more (135 GB/s) to the display hardware to sustain 60 volumes per second. As with regular 2-D video, one could reduce the bandwidth needed by simply sending fewer volumes per second and letting the display hardware repeat frames in the interim, or by sending only enough data to affect those areas of the display that need to be updated, as is the case in modern lossy-compression video formats such as MPEG. Furthermore, a 3-D volumetric display would require two to three orders of magnitude more CPU and/or GPU power beyond that necessary for 2-D imagery of equivalent quality, due at least in part to the sheer amount of data that must be created and sent to the display hardware. There is absolutely nothing that isn't thoroughly covered in the book. It is straightforward, and does an excellent job of explaining all about Volumetric display in key topics and material. There is no reason to invest in any other materials to learn about Volumetric display. You'll understand it all. Book Laser Based 3 D Volumetric Display System The Improved Second Generation

Download or read book Laser Based 3 D Volumetric Display System The Improved Second Generation written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NRaD, the RDT & E Division of the Naval Command, Control and Ocean Surveillance Center (NCCOSC), has developed and improved its second-generation device for displaying data, information, and scenes in a three-dimensional volume of image space. The device incorporates a 36-inch diameter double helix that spins at approximately 10 revolutions per second, providing a means to address a cylindrical volume. Under computer control, a laser beam is directed to illuminate certain discrete volume points (voxels) on the helix needed to create a scene. The laser light scatters from the surface of the helix, so, to the observer, each voxel appears to emanate from specific points in space. Each point has x-y coordinates determined by the position of the laser beam and a z coordinate determined by the height of the point on the helical surface. Any point within the cylindrical image volume can be computer-addressed to appropriately synchronize the laser beam, the Acousto-Optic (AO) Scanner, and the phase of the helix. Using a novel Acousto-Optic (AO) Random-Access Scanner, up to 40,000 laser-generated voxels refreshed at 20 Hz per color are projected onto the reflective surface of the rotating helix. (This is about 10 times more than the current state of the art.) The higher resolution allows improved color images, updated in real-time, for group viewing with the naked eye.
