Book Three Dimensional Unsteady Reactive Two Phase Flow Analysis to Predict Detonation Transition in Fragmented High Explosives Warheads

Download or read book Three Dimensional Unsteady Reactive Two Phase Flow Analysis to Predict Detonation Transition in Fragmented High Explosives Warheads written by Herman Krier and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to fuse initiation, metal containment wall failure and fragmentation of the high explosive can result from the impact forces between the warhead and the hardened target. The detonation that is expected to occur under totally confined conditions may be reduced to an unsteady, rapid deflagration with much less damage to the target. The principal work presented in the report is the development of a three-dimensional unsteady flow model which can be used to predict whether detonation will occur after the impact of a ruptured warhead filled with fragmented high explosive. The delay of detonation transition can be quite significant if there is sufficient mass loss through container walls. This is clearly demonstrated here, where significant detonation delays could be predicted when using even a quasi, one-dimensional assumption. This report includes significant new findings and is the culmination of more than two years of effort to solve the two- and three-dimensional flow in a reactive gas/solid mixture. The results demonstrate that it may be possible to predict whether a warhead with case failure (and filled with fragmented high explosive) will produce a low order detonation which is weaker than one required to damage structures. A major portion of the report deals with the numerical methods required in order to carry out such solutions. Results include not only pressure histories but flow velocities, reaction from loci, and temperature distributions.

Book A Fully Viscous Two Dimensional Unsteady Flow Analysis Applied to Detonation Transition in Porous Explosives

Download or read book A Fully Viscous Two Dimensional Unsteady Flow Analysis Applied to Detonation Transition in Porous Explosives written by Herman Krier and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes significant new progress towards solving the two-dimensional fully viscous unsteady flow in a reactive solid/gas mixture. The results demonstrate that it may be possible to predict whether a warhead with case failure (and filled with fragmented high explosive) will produce a low order detonation which is weaker than the one required to damage a structure. The loss of mass, momentum, and energy though a warhead case opening is a multi- dimensional problem even through the reaction front may progress axially through the damaged explosive. Mass is ejected in a basically radial direction and necessitates a multi-dimensional problem formulation in order to model the deflagration to detonation transition event accurately enough to make meaningful predictions. The appropriate equations of state and continuity equations are formulated and are solved by a finite differencing scheme. Run-up length to detonation in the fragmented explosive bed from a case opening through which mass is ejected should be married with a model of probabilistic case failure on impact to predict warhead lethality.

Book Detonation and Two Phase Flow

Download or read book Detonation and Two Phase Flow written by S Penner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Astronautics and Rocketry, Volume 6: Detonation and Two-Phase Flow compiles technical papers presented at the ARS Propellants, Combustion, and Liquid Rockets Conference held in Palm Beach, Florida on April 26-28, 1961. This book provides an excellent illustration of research and development on a selected group of problems relating to detonations, two-phase nozzle flow, and combustion in liquid fuel rocket engines. This volume is divided into two parts. Part 1 covers the entire range of physical conditions under which detonation may be initiated or sustained, such as high explosives, solid propellants, liquid sprays, and gases. Experimental and theoretical studies are also discussed, including the significant progress of the basic phenomena involved in transition from deflagration to detonation, and nature of stable detonations in dilute sprays and other systems. The perennial problems associated with high frequency instabilities in liquid fuel rocket engines are considered in Part 2. This publication is valuable to students and investigators working in the field of propulsion research and development.

Book Advances in Two Phase Flow and Heat Transfer

Download or read book Advances in Two Phase Flow and Heat Transfer written by Sadik Kakaç and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, two-phase flow and heat transfer problems associated with two-phase phenomena have been a challenge to many investigators. Two-phase flow applications are found in a wide range of engineering systems, such as nuclear and conventional power plants, evaporators of refrigeration systems and a wide vari ety of evaporative and condensive heat exchangers in the chemical industry. This publication is based on the invited lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on the Advances in Two-Phase Flow and Heat Transfer. The Horkshop was attended by more than 50 leading scientists and practicing engineers who work actively on two-phase flow and heat transfer research and applications in dif ferent sectors (academia, government, industry) of member countries of NATO. Some scientific leaders and experts on the subject matter from the non-NATO countries were also invited. They convened to discuss the state-of-the-art in two-phase flow and heat transfer and formulated recommendations for future research directions. To achieve these goals, invited key papers and a limited number of contributions were presented and discussed. The specific aspects of the subject were treated in depth in the panel sessions, and the unresolved problems identified. Suitable as a practical reference, these volumes incorporate a systematic approach to two-phase flow analysis.

Book Reactive Flow Modeling of the Interaction of TATB Detonation Waves with Inert Materials

Download or read book Reactive Flow Modeling of the Interaction of TATB Detonation Waves with Inert Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ignition & Growth model for the shock initiation and detonation of solid explosives is applied to calculating the main features of detonation waves in the triaminotrinitrobenzene (TATB) based high explosives LX-17, PBX 9502 and EDC-35. Under detonation conditions, TATB based explosives exhibit reaction zone lengths of 2 to 3 mm depending on the interactions between the detonation wave and the surrounding inert materials. This paper describes comparisons of Ignition & Growth calculations with data from several two- and three-dimensional experiments in which various materials are used to confine the TATB based explosives. The calculated unconfined failure diameters of PBX 9502 are normalized to the measured values at five initial temperatures. Failure diameters for LX-17 are then estimated by changing only the fraction ignited near the shock front. Fabry-Perot data on spherically divergent LX-17 snowball experiments is also compared to calculations. Calculated detonation velocities, wave front curvatures, and metal acceleration velocities are compared to experimental detonation data for TATB-based high explosives in tantalum, copper, PMMA, brass, and beryllium confinement. Three-dimensional prism failure test results on PBX 9502 are also stimulated using the ALE3D code.
