Book Three dimensional Photography of Facial Morphology of Adult African Americans Compared to Various Population Sets

Download or read book Three dimensional Photography of Facial Morphology of Adult African Americans Compared to Various Population Sets written by Leslie McNeil Talbert and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to compare the facial morphologies of an adult African-American population to an adult Caucasian-American population using three-dimensional surface imaging. Materials and Methods: Three-dimensional facial images were captured via a stereo-photogrammetric camera system (3dMDfac[TM] system). One hundred images of each population (African-American and Caucasian-American) were taken. Subjects were between 19-30 years of age, normal BMI, and no gross craniofacial anomalies. All facial images were aligned and combined using Rapidform 2006 Plus Pack 2 software to produce a male and female facial average for each population. The facial averages were then superimposed for comparison and the differences quantified and described. Results: Distinct differences were noted between the two populations. These differences were mostly in the forehead, alar base, and perioricular regions. The average facial difference between the African-American and Caucasian-American females was 1.18 ± 0.98 mm. The African-American females had a broader face, wider alar base, and more protrusive lips. The Caucasian-American females had a more prominent chin, malar region, and lower forehead. The average facial difference between the African-American and Caucasian-American males was 1.11 ± 1.04 mm. The African-American males had a more prominent upper forehead and periocular region, wider alar base, and more protrusive lips. However, there was no notable difference in chin points between the two male populations. Conclusions: Average faces can be created from three-dimensional photographs and used to compare the facial morphological differences between various populations and genders. African-American males tend to have a more prominent upper forehead and periocular region, wider alar base, and more protrusive lips. Caucasian-American males show a more prominent nasal tip and malar area. African-American females tend to have generally broader face, wider alar base, and more protrusive lips. Caucasian-American females show a more prominent chin point, malar region, and lower forehead.

Book The Comparison of 3 dimensional Soft tissue of Adult Korean Chinese and Houstonian Caucasian Patients with Class I Malocclusion

Download or read book The Comparison of 3 dimensional Soft tissue of Adult Korean Chinese and Houstonian Caucasian Patients with Class I Malocclusion written by Jamie Youngshin Kim and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to compare the computer generated facial averages of Korean adults with Chinese and Houstonian Caucasian faces using a three-dimensional surface imaging system. Materials and Methods: Three-dimensional images of Korean adults (Seoul, Korea) with Class I malocclusion were captured using the 3dMDTMface, which combines structured light and stereo-photogrammetry techniques. The images of 138 Koreans were processed to generate average male and female facial shells using Rapidform 2006 Plus Pack 2 software. The average Korean facial shells were superimposed and compared to the average shells of Chinese adults (Xi'an, China) and Caucasian adults (Houston, Texas) from previous studies. Results: The average Korean male and female faces were wider with prominent malar and zygomatic areas when compared with the Caucasian average faces. The average Caucasian male and female faces showed more protrusion in the glabella, nasion, rhinion, and the soft-tissue pogonion than the average Korean faces. The average Korean male face was retrusive at the masseteric region while having more prominent lips, nasal tip, and supraglabella than the Chinese counterpart. The average Korean female face was narrower than the average Chinese female face, but there was more protrusion in the peri-orbital, nasal tip, and malar region seen in the Korean female face. Conclusions: Although the average faces of Chinese and Korean populations in this study showed remarkable similarities, there were distinct differences seen in the facial morphology of the two Asian groups. Three-dimensional imaging can be effectively used to establish population facial norms as well as quantifying the variations seen between different ethnicities.

Book Three dimensional Photography of Facial Morphology of African American Children Compared to Welsh Children

Download or read book Three dimensional Photography of Facial Morphology of African American Children Compared to Welsh Children written by Don Franklin Norris and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to compare the facial morphology of African- American children to Welsh children using three-dimensional imaging. Materials and Methods: Three-dimensional images were captured using a stereo-photogrammatic camera system (3dMDfaceTM). 107 African-American children were imaged with the 3dMDfaceTM system and were compared with 64 Welsh children which were previously imaged using two Minolta Vivid VI900 3D laser scanners arranged in a stereo pair. The subjects were between 10 and 13 years old, presented with a normal BMI, and had no major craniofacial deformity. The images were aligned, combined and averaged using Rapidform 2006 Plus Pack 2 software producing a single average shell for four subgroups (Welsh male and female and African-American male and female). The average shells were compared by superimposing the shells and quantifying and describing the differences. Results: The African-American and Welsh subjects had average ages of 11.6 years and 11.8 years respectively. The shells of the African-American males and females both have more prominent lips and eyes than did their Welsh counterparts. The noses of the African-American averages were distinctly flatter and wider than the Welsh averages. The comparison of African-American male and female groups had the highest percentage of similarity among all the comparisons followed by the Welsh male and female comparison. The least similar groups were the African-American female and Welsh female groups. Conclusions: Three dimensional imaging can be used to compare facial morphology of various populations and genders. In general, African-American children have more prominent eyes, a flatter and broader nose, more procumbent lips, and are more prominent in the center of the forehead than Welsh children. Females in both ethnic groups tend to have more prominent malar areas and a more prominent chin point than their male counterparts.

Book The Social Psychology of Facial Appearance

Download or read book The Social Psychology of Facial Appearance written by Ray Bull and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several years ago Coleman (1981) reported that in 1979 one of the many in ternational cosmetics companies had an annual sales figure of $2. 38 billion, nearly 1. 25 million sales representatives, and over 700 products, the majority of these being for the face. Cash and Cash (1982) noted that in 1979 U. S. consumers spent over $4 million on cosmetic products. They stated that, "Although this practice would seem to be a fascinating aspect of human be havior on the basis of its generality and resilience, social-behavioral scientists have largely ignored the phenomenon so plainly (or pleasingly) in front of their eyes. " Why should people be so concerned with their facial appearance? Many psychologists have argued (e. g. , Kleck & Rubenstein, 1975) not only that facial information is usually the first that is available to the perceiver, but also that it is continuously available during social interaction. Maruyama and Miller (1981) stated that "appearance is often the first dimension upon which a stranger can be evaluated. Since people tend to see others as integrated and consistent units, rather than as collections of situation-specific behaviors, a potent and immediately evident basis for an evaluation, such as physical appearance, should intrude into and affect any overall and subsequent evalua tion.

Book Indigenous People and Poverty in Latin America

Download or read book Indigenous People and Poverty in Latin America written by George Psacharopoulos and published by Ashgate Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indigenous people constitute a large portion of Latin America's population and suffer from severe and widespread poverty. They are more likely than any other groups of a country's population to be poor. This study documents their socioeconomic situation and shows how it can be improved through changes in policy-influenced variables such as education. The authors review the literature of indigenous people around the world and provide a statistical overview of those in Latin America. Case studies profile the indigenous populations in Bolivia, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru, examining their distribution, education, income, labour force participation and differences in gender roles. A final chapter presents recommendations for conducting future research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the field of forensics, there is a critical need for genetic tests that can function in a predictive or inferential sense, before suspects have been identified, and/or for crimes for which DNA evidence exists but eye-witnesses do not. Molecular Photofitting fills this need by describing the process of generating a physical description of an individual from the analysis of his or her DNA. The molecular photofitting process has been used to assist with the identification of remains and to guide criminal investigations toward certain individuals within the sphere of prior suspects. Molecular Photofitting provides an accessible roadmap for both the forensic scientist hoping to make use of the new tests becoming available, and for the human genetic researcher working to discover the panels of markers that comprise these tests. By implementing population structure as a practical forensics and clinical genomics tool, Molecular Photofitting serves to redefine the way science and history look at ancestry and genetics, and shows how these tools can be used to maximize the efficacy of our criminal justice system. - Explains how physical descriptions of individuals can be generated using only their DNA - Contains case studies that show how this new forensic technology is used in practical application - Includes over 100 diagrams, tables, and photos to illustrate and outline complex concepts

It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.

Book Understanding Racial and Ethnic Differences in Health in Late Life

Download or read book Understanding Racial and Ethnic Differences in Health in Late Life written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-09-08 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the population of older Americans grows, it is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse. Differences in health by racial and ethnic status could be increasingly consequential for health policy and programs. Such differences are not simply a matter of education or ability to pay for health care. For instance, Asian Americans and Hispanics appear to be in better health, on a number of indicators, than White Americans, despite, on average, lower socioeconomic status. The reasons are complex, including possible roles for such factors as selective migration, risk behaviors, exposure to various stressors, patient attitudes, and geographic variation in health care. This volume, produced by a multidisciplinary panel, considers such possible explanations for racial and ethnic health differentials within an integrated framework. It provides a concise summary of available research and lays out a research agenda to address the many uncertainties in current knowledge. It recommends, for instance, looking at health differentials across the life course and deciphering the links between factors presumably producing differentials and biopsychosocial mechanisms that lead to impaired health.

Book excerpt: AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! From celebrated anthropologist Jennifer Raff comes the untold story—and fascinating mystery—of how humans migrated to the Americas. ORIGIN is the story of who the first peoples in the Americas were, how and why they made the crossing, how they dispersed south, and how they lived based on a new and powerful kind of evidence: their complete genomes. ORIGIN provides an overview of these new histories throughout North and South America, and a glimpse into how the tools of genetics reveal details about human history and evolution. 20,000 years ago, people crossed a great land bridge from Siberia into Western Alaska and then dispersed southward into what is now called the Americas. Until we venture out to other worlds, this remains the last time our species has populated an entirely new place, and this event has been a subject of deep fascination and controversy. No written records—and scant archaeological evidence—exist to tell us what happened or how it took place. Many different models have been proposed to explain how the Americas were peopled and what happened in the thousands of years that followed. A study of both past and present, ORIGIN explores how genetics is currently being used to construct narratives that profoundly impact Indigenous peoples of the Americas. It serves as a primer for anyone interested in how genetics has become entangled with identity in the way that society addresses the question "Who is indigenous?"
