This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication and Affect: A Comparative Approach examines the communication of affective or emotional feelings from a broad phylogenetic and ontogenetic perspective. The book presents basic research findings and theoretical orientations with regards to affective responses and communication involving humans, machines, chimpanzees, monkeys, dogs, and rodents. Comprised of seven chapters, this volume begins with a discussion on the development of love in primates throughout its entire sequential course, from the mother-infant stage of pious, proper propinquity to the adult stage of seasoned, salacious, seductive success. In all the stages of love, much of the essential social information is supplied by unlearned communications which are rapidly overlaid by a veneer of learning. Subsequent chapters explore attachment and dependence; signs of language in children and chimpanzees; affective aspects of aesthetic communication; the communication of affect and the possibility of human-machine interaction as a dyad; and development of affect in dogs and rodents. This book should be of use to psychologists, linguists, and educators interested in the evolution and development of communication and affect in mammals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is largely based on what has been a mammoth-one person called it a "heroic" -research project. Both fieldwork and data analyses were laborious and time-consuming, and the work could not have come to fruition without the cooperation of many people. Above all, I owe a debt of gratitude to the mothers and fathers who recognized the importance of such an investigation in building a secure knowledge base concerning human development and who kindly allowed us to come into their homes. The children, at 2 V2, did not have such an appreciation, but naturally I am very grateful to them for the star roles they played in the work. I have to thank all my collaborators for their help in various aspects of the research: Walter Zwirner was statistical consultant to the project, and Pat Olsen and Arlene Grineau were the chief research assistants-! owe particular thanks to them. Others who helped generously with data collection or data analysis (including program writing) were Pat Bachor, Valerie Becker, Rob Black, Doreen Darby, Judy Eser, Con Ferris, Susan Horsley, "Jagan," Ann Johnson, Wayne Miller, Sambhu Nath, Deanna Piwowar, Bruce Roe, Ken Ryba, Laurel Saville, Cecilia Schnurr, Terry Taerum, Debbie Twaddle, and John Wrenshall. Sherry Pitcher kindly prepared the index. Dorice Conway and Reginald Sauve collaborated in the analysis of identical-fraternal twin differences (Chapter 4); Nicholas Martin and Lindon Eaves were chiefly responsible for the biometric-genetic analysis of the data (Chapter 9).

Book New Developments in Behavioral Research Theory Method and Application

Download or read book New Developments in Behavioral Research Theory Method and Application written by Barbara C. Etzel and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1977, these examples of research and scholarly argument were collected in honor of Professor Sidney W. Bijou. In the language of academics, they constitute a Festschrift: a festival of scholarly writing, performed to celebrate the career of a person who produced, and stimulated others to produce, exactly such contributions throughout a long, valuable, and productive professional history. Since 1955, Dr Bijou had worked almost exclusively within the approach variously labelled as the functional analysis of behavior, the experimental analysis of behavior, operant conditioning, or Skinnerian psychology. From his point of view, it seems clear, the first of these labels was the correct one. It was the principle of objective, direct, observable analysis that attracted him.

Book Child Influences on Marital and Family Interaction

Download or read book Child Influences on Marital and Family Interaction written by Richard M Lerner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child Influences on Marital and Family Interaction: A Life-Span Perspective book grew out of a conference sponsored by the Division of Individual and Family Studies in the College of Human Development at the Pennsylvania State University in April, 1977. The chapters for this volume are revised versions of the papers originally presented at the conference. The book explores the conceptual, methodological, and empirical issues in the study of the child and his or her family. It details how the age-normative and atypical development of the child contributes to the parents' marital quality and to the entire family's interaction patterns across the life-span of both the child and parents. Consequently, the child is seen as capable of contributing to marriage and family relationships not only when he or she is in utero, a neonate, or an infant, but also when the child reaches middle and late childhood, adolescence, and the adulthood and aged years as well.
