Book Threatened Turtle Species in Ohio and Michigan

Download or read book Threatened Turtle Species in Ohio and Michigan written by Austin C. Hulbert and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation efforts are urgently needed to reduce global biodiversity loss and to keep natural ecosystems intact. Turtles (Order Testudines) are important components of their ecosystems but are one of the most threatened vertebrate groups in the world due to habitat destruction, overexploitation, climate change, invasive species, and disease. To effectively conserve turtles, we need a detailed understanding of their spatial and population ecology, knowledge which is lacking for many declining species. Advancing technological methods are allowing researchers to address these research needs. One technological advancement is the reduction in battery size, which now allows researchers to attach miniature radio transmitters to hatchling and juvenile turtles and track them in their natural habitat. The ability to radio-track the early life stages of turtles allows researchers to study their survival, movements, and habitat needs, which are severely understudied compared to the adult life stages. Battery size reduction also allows for smaller GPS devices which automatically record locations, and which substantially reduces the time and labor required to physically locate individual animals. With this size reduction, researchers have started deploying GPS devices on small turtles; however, this method is in its early stages and requires assessment of its accuracy. Here, I used miniature radio transmitters to study the survival and dispersal of the hatchling stage of two threatened turtle species, the spotted turtle (Clemmys guttata) and Eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina), in oak savanna habitat of the Upper Midwest. I found hatchlings survival rates of both species from nest emergence through overwintering. Box turtle hatchling survival increased with less nest shade cover, which is associated with warmer nests, shorter incubation durations, and earlier nest emergence dates. Therefore, it is important for managers to maintain a range of ground cover microhabitats in nesting areas so turtles can match nest incubation conditions with current local conditions, while also maximizing hatchling survival. Additionally, I deployed GPS devices on adult spotted and Eastern box turtles to assess the reliability and accuracy of automatically recorded locations on small turtles across a range of habitat types. I found mixed support for habitat affecting accuracy of locations, but the number of satellites received and HDOP had large effects on accuracy of locations recorded by GPS devices. After screening locations based on number of satellites and HDOP, location accuracy was greatly increased. GPS devices are unlikely to be accurate for small, semi-aquatic turtle species but show promise for small, terrestrial turtle species. However, proper testing of GPS devices and methods of filtering their location data are needed to demonstrate their effectiveness when deployed on small turtle species, because unfiltered data can cause bias in ecological calculations, such as home range sizes. Overall, through the use of advancing technologies to track turtles, my research provides rare ecological data on hatchlings of threatened turtle species in the Oak Openings region, while also quantifying the effectiveness of GPS devices on these species.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A report submitted by the Committee on Sea Turtle Conservation, addresses threats to the world's sea turtle populations to fulfill a mandate of the Endangered Species Act Amendments of 1988. It presents information on the populations, biology, ecology, and behavior of five endangered or threatened turtle species: the Kemp's ridley, loggerhead, leatherback, hawksbill, and green sea turtle. The report includes an examination of the relationship between sea turtle and human activity for the purpose of providing information for an assessment of the effectiveness of and need for regulations requiring the use of turtle excluder devices (TED's) by commercial shrimp trawlers. The sources of turtle mortality investigated include activities involving fisheries, dredging, boat collisions, removal of oil platforms, and plastics and debris. Conservation measures are analyzed that seek to protect sea turtle habitat. The report includes the rationale and objectives of a recovery plan, and discussion about education and technology transfer. Appendices are as follows: (1) Endangered Species Act Amendment of 1988; (2) interim report, committee on sea turtle conservation; (3) illustrations of TEDs; (4) aerial survey data of sea turtles in fishing zones; (5) sea turtle stranding data; (6) shrimp fishing efforts; (7) annotated and chronological list of educational efforts on TEDs for fishermen by the National Marine Fisheries Service; (8) annotated and chronological list of educational efforts on TEDs for fishermen by Sea Grant; (9) newsletters and notices pertaining to TEDs; and (10) biographies of committee members. The conclusions drawn from the study suggest conservation measures including the use of TED's, and increased protection for the turtles. Recommendations are also made to improve data bases, establish long-term population surveys, and initiate experimental programs to increase population sizes. (319 references) (MCO)

Book The Ecology Exploitation and Conservation of River Turtles

Download or read book The Ecology Exploitation and Conservation of River Turtles written by Don Moll and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-08 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The underlying theme of this book is that a widespread, taxonomically diverse group of animals, important both from ecological and human resource perspectives, remains poorly understood and in delcine, while receiving scant attention from the ecological and conservation community. This volume proposes a comprehensive overview of the world's river turtles' ecology, conservation, and management. It begins with a categorization of taxa which inhabit flowing water habitats followed by information on their evolutionary and physical diversity and biogeography. Within the framework of ecology, the authors discuss the composition of river turtle communities in different types of lotic habitats and regions, population dynamics, movements, reproductive characteristics and behavior, predators, and feeding relationships. In a conservation and management section, the authors identify and evaluate the nature and intensity of factors which threaten river turtle survival--almost all of which involve direct human exploitation or indirect effects of human induced habitat alteration and degradation. They then list and evaluate the various schemes which have been proposed or employed to halt declines and restore populations, and make recommendations for future management plans for specific species and regions. In closing, they state their viewpoint concerning future research directions and priorities, and an evaluation of future prospects for survival of the world's river turtle species.
