I have to thank the proprietors of the Times for allowing me to reprint them. They are reprinted just as they were first published except for a few corrections. Some objec tion has been made by correspondents to the article called The Illusions of War, on the ground that it is dispiriting and mawkish. I wrote it as a sermon for myself and my own more violent feelings. Chris tianity tells us to love our enemies. I cannot pretend that I have succeeded in doing so but that article and passages in the other articles are attempts to attain to a state of mind in which the Christian command shall not seem a foolish impossibility; and they are not, I think, inconsistent with a belief that we are fighting for a good cause. Book The Reformation of War Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Reformation of War Classic Reprint written by John F. C. Fuller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformation of War Philosophy is a love of wisdom, and wisdom is the power of forming the fittest judgments from whatever premises are under consideration. Philosophy is, therefore, an evolutionary system of thought which has as its Objective the survival of the fittest thoughts. While animals progress through the struggles of body, humankind, as distinct from animals, progresses through the struggles Of mind, but with this difference: that, while in animal life every unit must struggle in order to sur vive, in human life the struggles of one great brain will, on occasion, remould an epoch. We find, therefore, that human beings may be divided into two categories-the masters (super men) and the slaves (super-monkeys); in fact, into creators and imitators. This has always been so, and is likely to remain so, for without the second there can be no opposition to the first, and opposition is the manure of progress, and progress, seemingly, is of the will of God. If the aim Of wisdom is to arrive at the fittest judgments, then, indeed, is common-sense the true philosophy of life. To do the most appropriate thing at any moment is what is generally known as a common-sense act in other words, common-sense may be defined as: thought and action adapted to Circum stances. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Neglected Aspects of War The cause of Universal Peace, upon which so much of the world's attention has been fixed this summer by the Hague Conference, can progress surely to success only upon the same conditions by which any other movement for good reaches its goal. It will not be advanced, but retarded, by neglecting diligently and calmly to consider facts, to look them straight in the face; to see things as they are, and not merely as one would wish to see them now, or as it is possible that our descendants may be privileged to see in a future happier age. Among many perversions of thought and resultant exaggerations of statement, by the unconditional advocates of Arbitration, there is one which underlies all others. Book War Memories Classic Reprint

Download or read book War Memories Classic Reprint written by Frank A. Holden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Memories Here it is - a little book which reflects upon every page the intimate heart-life of the American boy in France, during the World War - what he saw and felt and thought and did, not only in the great crises of battle; but on the march and in the camp - setting forth the first impressions made upon a soldier's mind, under foreign skies, at the cannon 's mouth, and revealing the fact that everywhere and always his thoughts were of the dear ones at home, thousands of miles across the seas. It is like a mirror in its faithful reproduction of the simpler elements which enter into vast and splen did scenes. We have heard much of general move ments; of grand climaxes; of superb exhibitions of man-power, in rthe aggregate; of millions, upon one side, confronting millions upon another; and so vast has been the picture presented to our minds that we have utterly failed to grasp it, except in its out standing characteristics. We have heard too little of the human side of the great wan - too little ofthe things which carry a direct appeal to the deep heart of America. We have been hungry for the minor details - for the smaller threads for the frag mentary episodes and incidents - for the rare and delicate and tender touches of color which are need ed to complete the picture, and to give it beauty, pathos, power and charm. Ever since, in the lone solitudes of the night, we first began to wonder where our boys were, on the other side - if they were still safe - we have longed for such a book; and so far as our personal observa tion extends it is the very first book of this character to appear in print, on either side of the water. The experiences of one soldier are not unlike those of another; and every fond parent who reads this book will feel that his or her boy is writing, though it may be that his spirit now looks down upon them from the unseen halls of the Great Valhalla. Book excerpt: There are two ways of looking at the war: one as a journalist, the other as a theologian. The journalist tells you what happens; the theologian not only why it happens, but also what matters. If we look at this war through the eyes of a journalist or a commentator, it will he only a succession of events without any remote causes in the past, or any great purpose in the future. But if we look at the war through the eyes of God, then the war is not meaningless, though we may not presently understand its details. It may very well be a purposeful purging of the world’s evil that the world may have a rebirth of freedom under His Holy Law, for: Every human path leads on to God, He holds a myriad finer threads than gold, And strong as holy wishes, drawing us With delicate tension upward to Himself. Our approach is from the divine point of view, first of all, because it is the only explanation which fits the facts; secondly because the American people who have been confused by catchwords and slogans are seeking an inspiration for a total surrender of their great potentialities for sacrifice, both for God and country. The great mass of the American people are frankly dissatisfied with the ephemeral and superficial commentaries on what is happening. Being endowed with intelligence, they want to know why it is happening. We all know what we are fighting against; we want to know what we are fighting for. We all know that we are in a war; we want to know what we must do to make a lasting peace. We know whom we hate; but we want to know what we ought to love. We know we are fighting against a barbarism that is intrinsically wicked; we want to know what we have to do to make the resurrection of that wickedness impossible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of the War This bulletin makes no pretense of being either a thorough or a final treatment of the war. Its purpose is merely to gather in concise form the more significant phases of the war, so that these may be taught in the schools of Texas. A heavy responsibility rests upon all teachers in our present crisis, for their instruction will have great in uence upon the opinions of their pupils. Amid the bitterness and hatred that war develops, it becomes increasingly necessary for as many people as possible to keep clearly in mind the main issues of this con ict. Disloyalty and intrigue are abroad, and Ameri cans should one and all so understand our part in this war that no doubt or faintheartedness can turn us aside from what we have undertaken to do. Book Reflections on the Art of War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reflections on the Art of War Classic Reprint written by Sir Reginald Clare Hart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reflections on the Art of War The numerous favourable reviews of the first edition of this book, and the encouraging notice that has been taken of it by officers whose opinions carry weight, have induced me to venture upon a new and greatly enlarged edition which, with its detailed index, will, I trust, be found useful to officers studying the art of war, and to all who require a work of reference to incidents connected with the great battles of ancient and modern times, and with the generals - good and bad - who have left their names in history. By dwelling on the characteristics of many of the greatest commanders of all ages, I have endeavoured to make the first chapter an interesting introduction to the study of war. A certain familiarity with the characters of those who have been leaders of men in battle is absolutely essential to the right understanding of military operations. This preliminary study will assist and fortify the reader, because the acts and sayings of the men who have actually made history are everywhere brought forward by me as credible evidence in support of what I urge as sound teaching of the art of war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genesis of War and the Foundation of Peace In proceeding to disentangle and lay straight in our understanding the elements of any one of the complex problems that harass the life of the race, it is necessary to trace pres ent conditions from the1r pomt of origin. It may be said, strictly, that the finite mind is not capable of dealing with origins. But we can greatly aid our thinking by excluding inc1 dentals and thereby reducing the complexity of the problem to its simplest terms; we can return, in our thought, to that stage of de velopment Where human life included only the simple, fundamental relations and experi ences. Today it includes essentially no more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
