Can it be an open question among those who accept the Reformed confessions as faithful summaries of the teachings of revelation ? In one sense, this is not an open question among any who can of right be called Christians. Still less room for debate remains among those who agree in that interpretation of Scripture which makes salvation wholly of grace. But even among these, there is a vast diversity, not merely in the style of their preaching, but in the matter or substance of it. This does not imply that they necessarily contradict one another. It does not necessarily imply that any impugn, or even that they do not confess and abide by every article of the Confession in their discourses. But it implies something more than that diversity of gifts, by which different men are endowed with special qualifications for commending the same gospel to different classes of minds. The difference lies in the different proportions, surroundings, applications in which they set forth the different elements of the same body of truth; in what they signalize by frequent and 'emphatic iteration, and what they omit or touch lightly and charily, and in the foreign matter with which they illustrate, obscure, or encumber it. How else shall we account for the fact that one preacher has power chiefly in the aptness and force of his appeals to the impenitent; another, in awakening de vout feeling in the hearts of Christians; a third, in his lucid statement and unanswerable vindication of Christian doctrines; a fourth, in the enforcement of the moralities of the gospel; a fifth, in his extraordinary tact at working up occasional, miscellaneous, and semi-secular sermons ? Even among those then, who acknowledge fealty to the great principle...

Download or read book Deep Preaching written by J. Kent Edwards and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2009 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. Kent Edwards recalls a story that late pastor J. Vernon McGee told about seeing children in South Africa playing a game of marbles in the dust with real diamonds. The precious stones were being handled with no regard for their true worth. Edwards fears the same thing happens today when preachers offer Scriptural truth to listeners without being completely overwhelmed by its greatness themselves in the process. Deep Preaching is his call to "rethink" preaching. Edwards helps preachers learn to preach the word in ways that will powerfully change the lives of hearers. He contends that sermons "need not settle comfortably on the lives of the listeners like dust on a coffee table." He encourages preachers to join him in casting off the lines that moor their ministries to the status-quo and make every effort to steer their preaching out of the "comfortable shallows." He urges them to preach deep sermons rather than superficial ones, moving "beyond the yawn-inspiring to the awe-inspiring, from the trite to the transforming."

This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on Preaching, Being Contributions to Homiletics It had long been the cherished wish of Dr Alexander to prepare a volume on Homiletics, for the use of young ministers and students; and with this object in view, he was in the habit of jotting down, in his private journals, in the form of paragraphs, such thoughts as occurred to him on the subject. In one of his later journals I find the following entry: "If the Lord should spare me below, it will be well for me some day to look over all my dailies, and collect what I have written from time to time on Ministerial Work. It is already enough for a volume. It might do good when I am gone." But death defeated his plans. To carry out his purpose as far as it is now possible, I have collected these paragraphs, and print them just as they occur in his journals, without any attempt to arrange them in the order of subjects. I have also added to them several articles on the same subject, contributed by him to the Princeton Review, and a series of letters to young ministers, published in the Presbyterian, thus giving to the public, in a permanent form, all that he has written upon these important topics. Book Thoughts on Preaching and Pastoral Ministry

Download or read book Thoughts on Preaching and Pastoral Ministry written by James M. Garretson and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Thoughts on Preaching and Pastoral Ministry, James M. Garretson provides a detailed narrative of James W. Alexander’s life in order to better understand his approach to gospel labors. Garretson draws deeply from Alexander’s correspondence, tracking the spiritual development of his life as it shaped his practice of pastoral ministry. In addition, assessments of Alexander’s sermons, books, and especially reviews provide valuable personal statements that shed light on his character and convictions. Throughout, Alexander is allowed to speak for himself so that the reader may enter into the spiritual pulse that animated his life and actions. Bracing, heartening, and at times frustrating, Alexander’s growth as a Christian and development as a minister is the story of a man subdued by God’s grace and a life marked by a growing conformity to the likeness of Christ. For those whose privilege it is to serve as ministers of the gospel, Alexander’s life and instruction provide inspiration and wisdom for how to do pastoral ministry well and with all of one’s heart.

Book Homiletics or the Theory of Preaching

Download or read book Homiletics or the Theory of Preaching written by Alexander Vinet and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work by Vinet is one of the most quoted volumes in the history of teaching ministers the science of homiletics. Homiletics is the study of sermon preparation and preaching the Word of God with boldness, faithfulness and precision. The office of the Evangelical Ministry consists of different elements, among which the Word of God has the predominance. The Christian religion, the religion of liberty and persuasion, is a word. Jesus Christ, who is at once the Author and the Object of Christianity, is called the Word (John 1:1). The Word is the pastor’s great instrument. The minister speaks either on the part of man to God, or on the part of God to man; in doing the first he prays, in doing the second he preaches. It is of the second that this work treats. The Word is of the highest importance, and a minister is essentially a man who heralds the Word of God. This act of preaching has been reduced down into a teachable art. It gives preachers eloquence in their preaching if the rules of homiletics are faithfully followed, and as they are biblically solidified. The nature of ecclesiastical discourse involves differences from regular public speaking, and adds specific biblical rules which constitute a particular art under the name of Homiletics. Here the minister, if he is to preach the Word of God effectively, and for the glory of Christ, would be required to master his language, gestures, looks, etc., in order to be more eloquent in faithfully, biblically and precisely preaching the Word of God to the people of God. Eloquence in this way is a gift, and a gift of the soul. It is the gift of thinking and feeling with others as they think and feel, and of suiting to their thought the words and the movement of the minister’s biblical discourse; of preaching the thoughts of God. This volume constitutes one of the greatest courses on homiletics given in the history of the Christian church. It would serve any minister well who desires to faithfully feed his flock in both the act of sermon preparation and preaching from the pulpit. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.
