This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian and Oriental Philosophy of Art Let us assume that we are considering an exhibition Of Greek Objects, and call upon Plato to act as our Docent. He knows nothing of our distinction Of fine from applied arts. For him painting and agriculture, music and carpentry and pottery are all equally kinds Of poetry or making. And as Plotinus, following Plato, tells us, the arts such as music and carpentry are not based on human wisdom but on the thinking there. Whenever Plato Speaks disparagingly of the base mechanical arts and of mere labour as distinguished from the fine work Of making things, it is with refer ence to kinds of manufacture that provide for the needs Of the body alone. The kind of art that he calls whole some and will admit to his ideal state must be not only useful but also true to rightly chosen models and therefore beautiful, and this art, he says, will provide at the same time for the souls and bodies Of your citizens. His music stands for all that we mean by culture, and his gymnastics for all that we mean by physical training and well-being he insists that these ends of culture and physique must never be separately pursued the tender artist and the brutal athlete are equally contemptible. We, on the other hand are accustomed to think of music, and culture in general, as useless, but still valuable. We forget that music, traditionally, is never something only for the ear, something only to be heard, but always the accompaniment Of some kind of action. Our own conceptions of culture are typically negative. I believe that Professor Dewey is right in calling our cultural values snobbish. The lessons of the Museum must be applied to our life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Browning: As a Philosophical and Religions Teacher In order to do even this successfully, it is essential that every judgment passed should be exclusively ruled by the principles which govern art. Fine art is not real art till it is free that is, till its value is recognized as lying wholly within itself. And it is not, unfortunately, altogether unnecessary to insist that, so far from enhancing the value of an artist's work, we only degrade it into mere means, subordinate it to uses alien, and therefore antagonistic to its perfection, if we try to show that it gives pleasure, or refinement, or moral culture. There is no doubt that great poetry has all these uses, but the reader can enjoy them only on condition of for getting them; for they are effects that follow the sense of its beauty. Art, morality, religion, is each supreme in its Own Sphere; the beautiful is not more beautiful because it is also moral, nor is a painting great because its subject is religious. It is true that their spheres overlap, and art is never at its best except when it is a beautiful representa tion of the good; nevertheless the points of View of the artist and of the ethical teacher are quite different, and consequently also the elements within which they work and the truth they reveal. Book Thought and Religion Or the Mutual Contributions of Philosophy and Theology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Thought and Religion Or the Mutual Contributions of Philosophy and Theology Classic Reprint written by James William Lowber and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thought and Religion or the Mutual Contributions of Philosophy and Theology The purpose of this work is to show the mutual contributions of philosophy and theology. The history of philosophy and the history of theology have much in common, and if the theologian will study the history of philosophy it may be the means of saving him from many extremes and many errors. Philosophy has made important contributions to almost every department of theology. In the following departments it has certainly made important contributions: The Nature of God; The Nature of Man; God's Revelation to Man; Man's Duties to God; Man's Duties to Man; The Doctrine of a Future State. Philosophy is the highest and truest science, for it specially pertains to effects, causes and principles; it has for its object the investigation of those fundamental principles upon which all knowledge and all being ultimately rest. Various definitions have been given by philosophers of the science of first principles. According to Ueberweg, one of the most full and complete writers on the history of philosophy, philosophy is the science of first principles; it is included under the general name of science, but differs from the remaining sciences in that it is not occupied with a limited province of things, but with the nature and laws of whatever actually exists. Lord Bacon confines philosophy to that part of human learning which specially pertains to the reason. Sir William Hamilton substantially accepts the Aristotelian view of philosophy, that it is equivalent to a knowledge of things in their origin and causes. The word philosophy, which means a love of wisdom, is first found in the writings of Herodotus. It is attributed to Pythagoras, who selected it as a more modest title than sophist or wiseman. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of a Philosophy of Religion The date, October, 1882, at which I find my wife began this task, soon pushed aside to make way for her translation of Scherer's History of German Literature, resumed after a while, but at the last left unfinished recalls the movement in favour of church reform tch was then astir in Oxford, and in which she felt a keen interest. Of that movement during its brief continuance Arnold Toynbee was the life and soul, and he it was who by his earnestness and eu thusiasm kindled in others sympathy with a scheme which, in its leading particulars, alas! Had but little chance Of success. Toynbee wished that the English Church might become in fact, what it is in theory, the very nation itself in a religious aspect. He saw and valued the actual comprehensiveness of the Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Studies in the Philosophy of Religion Classic Reprint written by George Galloway and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Philosophy of Religion Without denying the high merits of Hegel's work, it is clear to us that it has also grave defects. In his reaction against Schleiermacher and the Romantic School, Hegel ignores the great import ance of feeling in the religious consciousness. If the feeling of dependence were the essence of religion, then, he remarks scornfully, the dog would be the most religious of creatures. The animal, we are told, feels, but it is the characteristic of man to think. True, but man also feels, and he does not feel as the animal feels. It is safe to say that if man were a purely thinking being, he would not be the religious being that experience shows him to be. Occupying the standpoint of an all-embracing idealism, Hegel gives no adequate psychological analysis of the religious consciousness. He does not treat of faith in its specific character; and though he indicates the dialectic movement by which feeling passes into representation, he fails to recognise how essential the interplay of sentiment, emotion, and idea is in the maturest spiritual experience. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of Philosophy, the Unification of Knowledge The cultivated mind, whatever its antecedents, holds a judicial position. That is to say, the educated and thought ful members of society are looked to, to pass impartial judgments upon questions concerning the general welfare. This impartiality is particularly necessary in philosophy, for thought is hedged about with prejudices, and almost every man represents some logical sect or school which he feels it his duty to support. Book The Philosophy of the Christian Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Philosophy of the Christian Religion Classic Reprint written by A. M. Fairbairn and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Christian Religion This book may be describe as an attempt to do two things: first, to explain religion through nature and; and, secondly, to consure Christianity through religion. The author conceives religion to be a joint product of the mind within man and the nature around him, the mind being the source of the ideas which constitute its soul, the nature around determining the usages and customs which build up its body. He does not think, therefore, that any one of its special forms can be explained without the local nature which begot and shaped it, or that its general being can be resolved and construed without the reason or thought which is common to the race. He sees in religion the greatest of all mans unconscious creations, and the most potent of the means which the past, while it was still a living present, formed for the making of the man and the times that were yet to be. The beliefs of the author are writ large on almost every page, and these he need neither explain nor justify here; but a word or two may be said as to the occasion which defined not so much the problem of the book as its scope and point of view. Some years ago he had the honour of being appointed by the University of Chicago lecturer on the Haskell foundation. The conditions of the endowment were that a certain number of lectures should be delivered in India, especially in the Presidency towns. His writings are sought for, read and translated both in England and on the continent of Europe, and it would be but refining gold to say aught in his praise. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Addresses on the Philosophy of Religion IT will be seen that the following Essays and Addresses were composed or delivered at various dates between 1904 and 1922. The second and sixth have already been privately printed; the ninth and tenth, of a slighter char acter than the others, appeared in The Student Movement and The Challenge respectively. The rest, as far as I have been able to ascertain, are now published for the first time. The earliest of these, Official Authority and Living Religion, was revised by Father George Tyrrell, and the author incorporated some of Tyrrell's suggestions into the substance of the essay. The address to which Baron von Huge] himself would probably have attached the most importance is the seventh, Suffering and God, which was prepared for the London Society for the Study of Religion, although only certain portions of it were actually read at the meeting. I feel confident that I am interpreting the Baron's wishes in dedicating the whole volume to the members of that Society, of which he was one of the founders, to which he devoted so much loving care and thought, and which so often had the inestimable privilege of listening to his words. Book The Christian Philosophy of Life

Download or read book The Christian Philosophy of Life written by Tilmann Pesch and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Philosophy of Life: Reflections on the Truths of Religion The author of "The Christian Philosophy of Life" has reached the close of his earthly pilgrimage. "Finita sunt omnia. In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti! Amen?" Such were his last words. On October 18, 1899, death came to end his sharp, prolonged sufferings. It found him an exile at Valkenburg, a small town in the Netherlands, and his mortal remains have been laid to rest in foreign soil, but we trust that his soul is at home once more in the land where light and peace reign eternally. Tilmann Pesch was born in Cologne on February 1, 1836, and entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus at Munster on October 15, 1852. He was consecrated to the priesthood in January 1866, by that splendid champion of the liberty of the Church, Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler, in the chapel of the episcopal palace at Munich, and made his solemn vows at Aix-la-Chapelle on February 2, 1871. For the space of many years he filled the post of lecturer on philosophy, first at Maria-Laach, and subsequently at Blijenbeck, in Holland. The numerous works for which we are indebted to his pen form no mean contribution to Catholic letters, and attest alike his intellectual gifts and industry, whilst through the medium of his spiritual writings, sermons and conferences, he has brought counsel and comfort to many souls. Wide learning, in his case, was accompanied by a childlike humility, and his gentle, benignant spirit knew neither fear nor compromise wherever principles were at stake.
