Book excerpt: "Thoughts of a wanderer" is a collection of thoughts at different times in my life that came alive subsequently or during the course of interaction with situations or people from time to time. Many of the incidences mentioned in the book are real. The topics have not been selected purposely in any chronological order as human lives are not tailor made to sequential events. When one is alone and starts pondering over the past experiences many reminiscences pass through in the mind. I have attempted to put some of those experiences in an analytical manner. We are all wanderers, in some way or the other, in the journey of life. Sometimes, I feel firmly that life is not limited between one's span of birth and death. There may be differences of opinion on this but, when one considers the stream of thoughts popping up in one's mind, either in the waking stage or dream stage, can we confine them only to our present life! The presentation through this book is an attempt to touch upon human values and cohesiveness of the entire universe in a bond of unity within which each life form exists.

Book The Vagrant Thoughts of a Wandering Man

Download or read book The Vagrant Thoughts of a Wandering Man written by Mathews Abraham Athiyalil and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this bouquet of poems I present to you my humble thoughts in simple words on a variety of topics. I have sung about the beauty of love. I have tried to let you hear the sighs and sobs in silence of struggling and suffering people. I have expressed my concerns about our planet and the need to keep it clean and green. I have written about the bond between God and man and his despair despite the prayers he raises. I have also shown the dark side of humanity wondering how man can oppress, exploit, enslave and kill others and sadly, try to justify it. Here, you can hear the muffled, dying cries of a new born girl child. Some songs are my thoughts that loved to wander far on the wide wings of the flying wind. Through most of the poems on social themes I am appealing to the conscience of the people to abandon violence particularly against women, children and the weak and to build a beautiful world of peace and love. May the humorous poems bring a smile on your face and laughter in your soul. Hope you will enjoy reading the book.

The little boat is all alone, and while its aloneness gives it the chance to wonder at the fairy-tale world above and below the waves, that also means it must save itself when it storms. And so it does. Readers young and old will find the strength and inspiration in this quietly powerful story about growing, learning, and life's ups and downs.

Book The Only Street in Paris Life on the Rue des Martyrs

Download or read book The Only Street in Paris Life on the Rue des Martyrs written by Elaine Sciolino and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller "Sciolino’s sharply observed account serves as a testament to…Paris—the city of light, of literature, of life itself." —The New Yorker Elaine Sciolino, the former Paris Bureau Chief of the New York Times, invites us on a tour of her favorite Parisian street, offering an homage to street life and the pleasures of Parisian living. "I can never be sad on the rue des Martyrs," Sciolino explains, as she celebrates the neighborhood’s rich history and vibrant lives. While many cities suffer from the leveling effects of globalization, the rue des Martyrs maintains its distinct allure. On this street, the patron saint of France was beheaded and the Jesuits took their first vows. It was here that Edgar Degas and Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted circus acrobats, Emile Zola situated a lesbian dinner club in his novel Nana, and François Truffaut filmed scenes from The 400 Blows. Sciolino reveals the charms and idiosyncrasies of this street and its longtime residents—the Tunisian greengrocer, the husband-and-wife cheesemongers, the showman who’s been running a transvestite cabaret for more than half a century, the owner of a 100-year-old bookstore, the woman who repairs eighteenth-century mercury barometers—bringing Paris alive in all of its unique majesty. The Only Street in Paris will make readers hungry for Paris, for cheese and wine, and for the kind of street life that is all too quickly disappearing.

Book Thinking Again A Diary

Download or read book Thinking Again A Diary written by Jan Morris and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jan Morris, one of “Britain’s greatest living writers” (Times, UK), returns with this whimsical yet deeply affecting volume on life as a redoubtable nonagenarian. The irrepressible Jan Morris—author of such classics as Venice and Trieste—is at it again: offering a vibrant set of reminiscences that remind us “what a good, wise and witty companion Jan Morris has been for so many readers for so long” (Alexander McCall Smith, New York Times Book Review). “Like Michel de Montaigne” (Danny Heitman, Wall Street Journal), Morris waxes on the ironies of modern life in all their resonant glories and inevitable stupidities—from her daily exercise (a “statutory thousand paces of brisk walk”) to the troubles of Brexit; her enduring yet complicated love for America; and honest reflections on the vagaries and ailments of aging. Both intimate and luminously wise, Thinking Again is a testament to the virtues of embracing life, creativity, and, above all, kindness.

Book The Wandering Mind

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael C. Corballis
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2015-04-15
  • ISBN : 022623861X
  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book The Wandering Mind written by Michael C. Corballis and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corballis argues that mind-wandering has many constructive and adaptive features. These range from mental time travel?the wandering back and forth through time, not only to plan our futures based on past experience, but also to generate a continuous sense of who we are--to the ability to inhabit the minds of others, increasing empathy and social understanding. Through mind-wandering, we invent, tell stories, and expand our mental horizons. Mind wandering , hardly the sign of a faulty network or aimless distraction, actually underwrites creativity, whether as a Wordsworth wandering lonely as a cloud, or an Einstein imagining himself travelling on a beam of light. Corballis takes readers on a mental journey in chapters that can be savored piecemeal, as the minds of readers wander in different ways, and sometimes have limited attentional capacity.
