Book Medicinemaker

Book excerpt: In the brilliant visionary tradition of Carlos Castaneda, anthropologist Hank Wesselman first documented his spiritual journey in the acclaimed account Spiritwalker. Now he continues his travels through the spirit world in this astonishing book, leading us into the heart of one of the greatest mysteries of existence. Dr. Wesselman's inspiring quest began with a dramatic encounter on the island of Hawaii. Though he had feared his connection to Nainoa, a kahuna initiate and fellow mystic traveler, would be severed when he moved to San Diego, Wesselman would continue to merge minds with Nainoa. Over the next five years, the true purpose of their profound yet cryptic contact took shape. Wesselman had gained access to some inner doorway, putting him in the presence of a transcendent life force and intelligence. On the threshold of a dazzling new understanding of nature, he was a shaman in training, an initiate into the sacred, secret healing powers of the spirit world. This remarkable book gives us an unprecedented glimpse into the origin and the destiny of our species. Hank Wesselman has brought back from his extraordinary travels an extraordinary message: the keys to personal power and to the healing of all humankind.

Book Letters By A Modern Mystic Excerpts from Letters Written at Dansalan Lake Lanao Philippine Islands to His Father

Download or read book Letters By A Modern Mystic Excerpts from Letters Written at Dansalan Lake Lanao Philippine Islands to His Father written by Frank C. Laubach and published by Mockingbird Press. This book was released on 2022-06-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letters by a Modern Mystic is a collection of excerpts from the letters of missionary Frank C. Laubach. Written between January 1930 and January 1932, these intimate writings show a faithful man's work to become closer to God through daily, hourly, and minute-by-minute practice. Frank C. Laubach (1884-1970) was an American missionary and literacy advocate. After graduating from Princeton University (1909), Union Theological Seminary (1913), and Columbia University (Ph.D., 1915), he and his wife Emma sailed to the Philippines to begin their missionary life. They worked among the local Catholic population and spent seven years building evangelical churches on Mindanao, one of the largest Philippine islands. Laubach was later appointed to the faculty of Union Theological Seminary, helping to establish the campus in Manila. During this time, he wrote the book The People of the Philippines, a history of the islands and of religious life there. After 14 years in the Philippines, Laubach traveled to Dansalan (renamed Malawi in 1956) to work with the Muslim Moros people. Finding them resistant to his evangelical message, he thought that a focus on literacy would be a better method for reaching them. He felt that approaching the Moros people with education and "a divine love which will speak Christ to them though I never use his name" would lead to greater results. His "each one teach one" method of learning to read spread quickly, leading to an explosion of literacy on the island. During his time at Dansalan, Laubach was alone, his wife and son remaining on another island for health and education purposes. Laubach combatted his loneliness by writing letters to his father about his work, his faith, and his "deep mystic experience of God." One might expect an evangelical Christian missionary from 1930 to be hostile to the ideas of another religion. But in fact, Laubach seems to welcome the Muslim perspective. "Living in the atmosphere of Islam is proving-thus far-a tremendous spiritual stimulation. Mohammed is helping me..." He found strength in some fundamentals of Islam. "Submission [to God] is the first and last duty of man [in Islam]", he writes. "That is exactly what I have been needing in my Christian life." He felt that he had not, to this point in his life, made enough of an effort to live minute-by-minute with the will of God. This concept of living each minute for God comes up again and again. As he puts it into practice, Laubach seems to find a rapture and connection to God and his fellow man that he's never known before. Written as personal letters rather than as a piece of literature, this short work is both intimate and readable. It provides valuable insight into the mind of a spiritual man, as well as inspiration for how the modern Christian can try to lead a more Christ-filled life. Even his failures provide encouragement. In a letter of April 1930, he confesses that the constant submission to God is difficult and that he often falls short. In 1935, Laubach began to spread his literacy method to other countries. After retiring from his missionary work, he founded Laubach Literacy which has helped nearly 3 million people worldwide learn how to read. In 2002, the program merged with Literacy Volunteers of America to become Pro-Literacy, which still works to spread the written word globally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Charles Laubach was an Evangelical Christian missionary and mystic known as "The Apostle to the Illiterates." One of his most widely influential devotional works was a pamphlet entitled "The Game with Minutes." In it, Laubach urged Christians to attempt keeping God in mind for at least one second of every minute of the day. In this way Christians can attempt the attitude of constant prayer spoken of in the Epistle to the Colossians. The pamphlet extolled the virtues of a life lived with unceasing focus on God.

From the beginning of human creativity itself, image-makers have been drawn to these unknown spheres and have created curious artworks that transcend time and place – but what is it that attracts artists to these magical realms? From theosophy and kabbalah, to the zodiac and alchemy; spiritualism and ceremonial magic, to the elements and sacred geometry – The Art of the Occult introduces major occult themes and showcases the artists who have been influenced and led by them. Featuring prominent, marginalised and little-known artists, The Art of the Occult crosses mystical spheres in a bid to inspire and delight. Divided into thematic chapters (The Cosmos, Higher Beings, Practitioners), the book acts as an entertaining introduction to the art of mysticism – with essays examining each practice and over 175 artworks to discover. Book excerpt: The Christian mystics were seekers of God's wisdom and presence. They sought out, as described by the Celtic Christian tradition, those places "worn thin"; where earth and heaven lose their distinctions. They serve as guides to those "thin" places for the modern day spiritual seeker. The goal of this book is not to update the tradition, but to locate the ancient wisdom and spiritual insights in a modern context. In this book, the two thousand year long tradition of spiritual seekers, the Christian mystics, will be explored for the purposes of mining their insights and wisdom for today's seeker. Their wisdom has been passed to us through what is called the Contemplative or Mystical path. It is a tapestry threaded with ecstatic visions of divine love, personal revelation and a deep sense of God's direct presence. This book will introduce you to the history, major themes, characters and practices of the Christian mystics. The mystics will serve as your spiritual guides to the love of God. The purpose of this book is not to update the ancient Contemplative wisdom and practices of the Christian mystics. Instead, the intent is to understand their wisdom in the hope of articulating it in such a way that spiritual seekers from a modern context can understand and apply what is gained for the benefit of their spiritual life.

Book excerpt: "Hyman is awesomely consistent, brilliant, ascetic--more and more people say he is the best painter in America, and so he is." -Robert Lowell This important publication, the first of its kind, presents the paintings and drawings of an aesthetic and mystical searcher in the tradition of William Blake, Albert Pinkham Ryder and Odilon Redon, who strove for the moment when, in his own words, "the mood is as intense as it can be made." Hyman Bloom's work, influenced by his Jewish heritage (whose impression on his painting he described as a "weeping of the heart") and Eastern religions, touches on many of the themes of 20th-century culture and art: the body, its immanence and transience, abstraction and spiritual mysticism. Bloom was admired by leading figures in the art world of his time, including Alfred H. Barr Jr. and Dorothy Miller; Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning hailed him as "the first Abstract Expressionist." The poet Robert Lowell praised Bloom, writing in a letter to Elizabeth Bishop, "Hyman is awesomely consistent, brilliant, ascetic--more and more people say he is the best painter in America, and so he is." The book's illustrations include ten previously unpublished masterworks, plus images of the figure as powerful and provocative as the paintings by Francis Bacon that were once exhibited alongside them. Hyman Bloom(1913-2009) was born in Lithuania, now Latvia. He and his family immigrated to the United States in 1920, escaping anti-Semitic persecution. He lived and worked in the Boston area until his death. His work is held in many public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Whitney Museum of American Art and others.

Book The Modern Christian Mystic

Download or read book The Modern Christian Mystic written by Albert J. LaChance and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new work, Albert LaChance presents a complete reframing of Christianity as an experiential rather than dogmatic approach to the presence of Christ. It emphasizes the idea of Christ as the source and sustainer of the cosmos, the Earth, the life community, and global culture. As such, it takes a "unitive" approach, with Christianity understood as being in mystical union with global culture, and with the ecological realities of the Earth. In the author's view, Christianity thus joins hands with Buddhism, Hinduism, and Taoism in a unitive oneness with all that is. Consisting of twenty-eight short chapters, The Modern Christian Mystic focuses on the presence of God permeating and organizing the beginning of existence, in the form of consciousness giving birth to energy, and then the material reality of the universe. The author argues that just as St. Augustine introduced the "pagan" Plato to Christianity, and a millennium later St. Thomas Aquinas revitalized his faith with the "pagan" philosophy of Aristotle, so in the modern age the "non-theism" of Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism holds the key to a revivified mystical practice. The Modern Christian Mystic posits a nurturing new world based on commonality rather than conflict in the world of spirit.
