Download or read book Thou and You in Early Modern English Dialogues written by Terry Walker and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a corpus-based study examining thou and you in three speech-related genres from 15601760, a crucial period in the history of second person singular pronouns, spanning the time from when you became dominant to when thou became all but obsolete. The study embraces the fields of corpus linguistics, historical pragmatics, and historical sociolinguistics. Using data drawn from the recently released A Corpus of English Dialogues 15601760 and manuscript material, the aim is to ascertain which extra-linguistic and linguistic factors highlighted by previous research appear particularly relevant in the selection and relative distribution of thou and you. Previous research on thou and you has tended to concentrate on Drama and/or been primarily qualitative in nature. Depositions in particular have hitherto received very little attention. This book is intended to help fill a gap in the literature by presenting an in-depth qualitative and quantitative analysis of pronoun usage in Trials, Depositions, and, for comparative purposes, Drama Comedy.
Download or read book Holier Than Thou written by Jackie Hill Perry and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If God is holy, then He can’t sin. If God can’t sin, then He can’t sin against you. If He can’t sin against you, shouldn’t that make Him the most trustworthy being there is? Bestselling author Jackie Hill Perry, in her much anticipated follow-up to Gay Girl, Good God, helps us find the reason we don’t trust God— we misunderstand His holiness. In Holier Than Thou, Jackie walks us through Scripture, shaking the dust off of “holy” as we’ve come to know it and revealing it for what it really is: good news. In these pages, we will see that God is not like us. He is different. He is holy. And that’s exactly what makes Him trustworthy. As it turns out, God being “holier than thou” is actually the best news in the world, and it’s the key to trusting Him.

Download or read book You and Thou in Shakespeare written by Penelope Freedman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romeo and Juliet always use 'thou' to each other, but they are the only pair of lovers in Shakespeare to do this. Why? All the women in Richard III address Richard as 'thou', but no man ever does. Why? When characters address the dead, they use 'thou' – except for Hamlet, who addresses Yorick as 'you'. Why? Shakespeare's contemporaries would have known the answers to these questions because they understood what 'thou' signified, but modern actors and audiences are in the dark. Through performance-oriented analysis of extracts from the plays, this book explores the language of 'trulls' and termagants, true loves and unwelcome wooers, male impersonators, smothering mothers, warring spouses and fighting men, as well as investigating lèse-majesté, Freudian slips, crisis moments and rhetorical flourishes. Drawing on work with RSC actors, as well as the author's experience of playing a range of Shakespearean roles, the book equips the reader with a new tool for tracking emotions, weighing power relations and appreciating dazzling complexity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the nineteenth century Jacques-Auguste de Thou (1553-1617) was among the most famous and most valued of historians. While his first fame was a succes de scandale - the History of His Time was placed on the Index in 160g - de Thou's work quickly found favor with the humanistically-educated learned class throughout Europe. The esteem in which the History was held transcended religious divisions. The historian received letters of praise from staunchly orthodox Spain and Portugal as well as from heretic England and Germany; through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries his History was read with enthusi asm by certain cardinals at the very curia which condemned it; and so staunch a champion of orthodoxy as Bishop Bossuet did not hesitate to appeal to "such a great author" for support in his own historical works. ! To the philosophe of the Enlightenment de Thou's impartiality in de scribing the impassioned times through which he lived and the exact yet eloquent style with which he wrote the History of His Time were familiar touchstones. Voltaire appealed to the "truthful and eloquent de Thou" again and again in his works,2 William Pitt rose in the House of Commons to quote the words of the "great historian of France" during the early years of the French Revolution,3 Lessing 4 and Herder 5 praised him with poetic hyperbole, and Edward Gibbon re ferred to "the authority of my masters, the grave Thuanus and the philosophic Hume . . . .

Download or read book An Analysis of Martin Buber s I and Thou written by Simon Ravenscroft and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-05-20 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Buber’s I and Thou argues that humans engage with the world in two ways. One is with the attitude of an ‘I’ towards an ‘It’, where the self stands apart from objects as items of experience or use. The other is with the attitude of an ‘I’ towards a ‘Thou’, where the self enters into real relation with other people, or nature, or God. Addressing modern technological society, Buber claims that while the ‘I-It’ attitude is necessary for existence, human life finds its meaning in personal relationships of the ‘I-Thou’ sort. I and Thou is Buber’s masterpiece, the basis of his religious philosophy of dialogue, and among the most influential studies of the human condition in the 20th century.

Download or read book Lucifer How Art Thou Fallen written by Ellen G. White and published by TEACH Services, Inc.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation from the Spirit of Prophecy (the writings of Ellen G. White) covers the history of Lucifer from his creation to his fall, thru his warfare on earth, down to his final destruction. The purpose of this book is not to exalt Satan, but rather to show his character works, and methods as he wars against God, Christ, and the Church. As the Apostle Paul warned, "Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices" (2 Corinthians 2:11), we are vulnerable in our ignorance. God's people need to be aware of the serpent's cunning, so as not to fall under his power and influence. That knowledge alone, however, will not keep us safe. We must "Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." (Ephesians 6:11) The tremendous amount of material on this subject presented a challenge in compiling that which could tell the high points of the history, provide the best possible lessons and warnings for God's people, extend hope and encouragement for these last days (when Satan and his hosts are making "war with the remnant"), while keeping it within the confines of the cover of this small volume. Our hope and prayer is that we have succeeded in this challenge, presenting the reader with a priceless aid in preparation for earth's final conflict, as well as the day-to-day trials and struggles with the powers of darkness. The Lord be magnified!
