Book excerpt: In the fourth tale in this beloved series, villainous Sebastian Eels returns to Eerie-on-Sea, thrusting Herbie and Violet into a new adventure involving a missing girl, a spooky wax museum, and a dangerous clockwork robot. Herbie Lemon, Lost-and-Founder at the Grand Nautilus Hotel, and his fearless friend Violet Parma have unearthed many secrets in their village of Eerie-on-Sea: secrets lurking beneath the waves, lapping onto the beaches, and lying behind locked doors. When their brilliant and ruthless nemesis, Sebastian Eels, returns with a plan to open the long-shuttered waxworks museum, Herbie and Violet suspect nefarious motives. Their investigation leads them into the dark Netherways below the town—and into the tragic past of the famous toymaker and inventor Ludovic Festergrimm and his doomed daughter, Pandora. Sebastian Eels is convinced that within the story of Festergrimm is the key to Eerie’s deepest secret—a secret in which Herbie himself plays a crucial part—and he’ll stop at nothing to uncover it, including bringing a terrifying clockwork legend back to life. With echoes of fairy tales and monster movies, plus a dismembered finger or two, this is a deliciously creepy addition to a fantastical mystery series that is perfectly calibrated to thrill middle-grade readers.

It’s winter in the town of Eerie-on-Sea, where the mist is thick and the salt spray is rattling the windows of the Grand Nautilus Hotel. Inside, young Herbert Lemon, Lost and Founder for the hotel, has an unexpected visitor. It seems that Violet Parma, a fearless girl around his age, lost her parents at the hotel when she was a baby, and she’s sure that the nervous Herbert is the only person who can help her find them. The trouble is, Violet is being pursued at that moment by a strange hook-handed man. And the town legend of the Malamander — a part-fish, part-human monster whose egg is said to make dreams come true — is rearing its scaly head. As various townspeople, some good-hearted, some nefarious, reveal themselves to be monster hunters on the sly, can Herbert and Violet elude them and discover what happened to Violet’s kin? This lighthearted, fantastical mystery, featuring black-and-white spot illustrations, kicks off a trilogy of fantasies set in the seaside town.

Download or read book Born of War written by Thomas Taylor and published by McGraw-Hill Companies. This book was released on 1988 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'A man of genius, a man of destiny,' was Churchill's epitaph for the most original and controversial warrior of the twentieth century, Orde Wingate. Extolled by American and Israeli allies, grudgingly admired by Italian and Japanese foes, the iconoclastic Wingate fought his bitterest campaigns against the hierarchy of his own British army, which he led to its first victories on two continents during World War II. Even before, he had gained enduring fame. Like his cousin, Lawrence of Arabia, Wingate developed the embryo of a guerrilla army in the Middle East; in its ranks were the founding fathers of Israel, whom he was ready to lead against the Nazis. Rebuffed by the British high command, he worked himself into the service of the emperor of Ethiopia, a king on crusade to regain his kingdom from Mussolini's empire--an impossibly romantic mission in which only Wingate believed. Closely escaping death, Wingate then embarked on what British generals thought to be another sacrificial adventure--to oust the seemingly invincible Japanese army from Burma. Wingate was tossed like a grenade into the Japanese rear, leading a suicide expedition to cut Japanese supply lines while the British army recovered from defeat. He called his patchwork forces 'the Chindits,' a light brigade that became the American model for Merrill's Marauders. He named his behind-the-lines strategy 'long-range penetration,' the forerunner of today's extended battlefield and air-mobile warfare. At the same time Wingate was the first general since Hannibal to use elephants, the last to walk into battle and kill with his own hands. By Whatever methods, he won; against whatever odds, he prevailed--until his final, mysterious disappearance. Mixing historical fact with novelistic technique, [this book] is a tour de force of military adventure writing and a fascinating literary sojourn into the life of an enigmatic and haunting character."--Dust jacket.

Book Thomas Jefferson s Education

Download or read book Thomas Jefferson s Education written by Alan Taylor and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a Pulitzer Prize–winning historian comes a brilliant, absorbing study of Thomas Jefferson’s campaign to save Virginia through education. By turns entertaining and tragic, this beautifully written history reveals the origins of a great university in the dilemmas of Virginia slavery. It offers an incisive portrait of Thomas Jefferson set against a social fabric of planters in decline, enslaved black families torn apart by sales, and a hair-trigger code of male honor. A man of “deft evasions” who was both courtly and withdrawn, Jefferson sought control of his family and state from his lofty perch at Monticello. Never quite the egalitarian we wish him to be, he advocated emancipation but shrank from implementing it, entrusting that reform to the next generation. Devoted to the education of his granddaughters, he nevertheless accepted their subordination in a masculine culture. During the revolution, he proposed to educate all white children in Virginia, but later in life he narrowed his goal to building an elite university. In 1819 Jefferson’s intensive drive for state support of a new university succeeded. His intention was a university to educate the sons of Virginia’s wealthy planters, lawyers, and merchants, who might then democratize the state and in time rid it of slavery. But the university’s students, having absorbed the traditional vices of the Virginia gentry, preferred to practice and defend them. Opening in 1825, the university nearly collapsed as unruly students abused one another, the enslaved servants, and the faculty. Jefferson’s hopes of developing an enlightened leadership for the state were disappointed, and Virginia hardened its commitment to slavery in the coming years. The university was born with the flaws of a slave society. Instead, it was Jefferson’s beloved granddaughters who carried forward his faith in education by becoming dedicated teachers of a new generation of women.

It is the purification, indeed, from material irrationality, and the mortal body; but the perfection, in consequence of being the resumption of our proper felicity, and a reascent to the divine likeness. To effect these two is the province of Virtue and Truth; the former exterminating the immoderation of the passions; and the latter introducing the divine form to those who are naturally adapted to its reception.” Aeterna Press
