Book 25 Years of Model Checking

Download or read book 25 Years of Model Checking written by Orna Grumberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-07-03 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Model checking technology is among the foremost applications of logic to computer science and computer engineering. The model checking community has achieved many breakthroughs, bridging the gap between theoretical computer science and hardware and software engineering, and it is reaching out to new challenging areas such as system biology and hybrid systems. Model checking is extensively used in the hardware industry and has also been applied to the verification of many types of software. Model checking has been introduced into computer science and electrical engineering curricula at universities worldwide and has become a universal tool for the analysis of systems. This Festschrift volume, published in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Model Checking, includes a collection of 11 invited papers based on talks at the symposium "25 Years of Model Checking", 25MC, which was part of the 18th International Conference on Computer Aided Verification (CAV 2006), which in turn was part of the Federated Logic Conference (FLoC 2006) held in Seattle, WA, USA, in August 2006. Model checking is currently attracting considerable attention beyond the core technical community, and the ACM Turing Award 2007 was given in recognition of the paradigm-shifting work on this topic initiated a quarter century ago. Here we honor that achievement with the inclusion of facsimile reprints of the visionary papers on model checking by Edmund Clarke and Allen Emerson, and by Jean-Pierre Queille and Joseph Sifakis.

Book excerpt: Over the last four decades, the fashion modeling industry has become a lightning rod for debates about Western beauty ideals, the sexual objectification of women, and consumer desire. Yet, fashion models still captivate, embodying all that is cool, glam, hip, and desirable. They are a fixture in tabloids, magazines, fashion blogs, and television. Why exactly are models so appealing? And how do these women succeed in so soundly holding our attention? In This Year’s Model, Elizabeth Wissinger weaves together in-depth interviews and research at model castings, photo shoots, and runway shows to offer a glimpse into the life of the model throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Once an ad hoc occupation, the “model life” now involves a great deal of physical and virtual management of the body, or what Wissinger terms “glamour labor.” Wissinger argues that glamour labor—the specialized modeling work of self-styling, crafting a ‘look,’ and building an image—has been amplified by the rise of digital media, as new technologies make tinkering with the body’s form and image easy. Models can now present self-fashioning, self-surveillance, and self-branding as essential behaviors for anyone who is truly in the know and ‘in fashion.’ Countless regular people make it their mission to achieve this ideal, not realizing that technology is key to creating the unattainable standard of beauty the model upholds—and as Wissinger argues, this has been the case for decades, before Photoshop even existed. Both a vividly illustrated historical survey and an incisive critique of fashion media, This Year’s Model demonstrates the lasting cultural influence of this unique form of embodied labor.

Book Luttinger Model

Download or read book Luttinger Model written by Vieri Mastropietro and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Luttinger Model is the only model of many-fermion physics with legitimate claims to be both exactly and completely solvable. In several respects it plays the same role in many-body theory as does the 2D Ising model in statistical physics. Interest in the Luttinger model has increased steadily ever since its introduction half a century ago. The present volume starts with reprints of the seminal papers in which it was originally introduced and solved, and continues with several contributions setting out the landscape of the principal advances of the last fifty years and of prominent new directions. Contents:The Luttinger Model and Its Solution:An Exactly Soluble Model of a Many-Fermion System (Joaquin M Luttinger)Exact Solution of a Many-Fermion System and Its Associated Boson Field (Daniel C Mattis and Elliott H Lieb)Lattice, Dynamical and Nonlinear Effects:Luttinger Model and Luttinger Liquids (Vieri Mastropietro)The Luttinger Liquid and Integrable Models (Jesko Sirker)Long Time Correlations of Nonlinear Luttinger Liquids (Rodrigo G Pereira)An Expanded Luttinger Model (Daniel C Mattis)Applications and Experimental Test:Quantum Hall Edge Physics and Its One-Dimensional Luttinger Liquid Description (Orion Ciftja)A Luttinger Liquid Core Inside Helium-4 Filled Nanopores (Adrian Del Maestro)Some Experimental Tests of Tomonaga–Luttinger Liquids (Thierry Giamarchi)Bosonization and Its Application to Transport in Quantum Wires (Feifei Li)Generalizations to Higher Dimensions:Fermions in Two Dimensions, Bosonization, and Exactly Solvable Models (Jonas de Woul and Edwin Langmann)Luttinger Liquid, Singular Interaction and Quantum Criticality in Cuprate Materials (Carlo Di Castro and Sergio Caprara)Luttinger Model in Dimensions d > 1 (Daniel C Mattis) Readership: Physicists and theoretical chemists in condensed matter and/or nuclear-matter physics and graduate students in these fields, mathematical physicists working in the many-body problem, experimentalists in low-dimensional phenomena. Keywords:Luttinger Model;Luttinger Liquid;Physics in One Dimention;Many-Fermion Theory;Many-Body PhysicsReviews: “Luttinger's model has come to play such a dominant role in condensed matter physics that a book like this is most welcome and long overdue. The model, which grew out of Thirring's model, is not only soluble – it is also reveals a great deal about physics that is not easily seen by ordinary standard techniques. The authors have brought together well written articles on the history, current developments, and possible directions for future research, which will be useful to both students and advanced researchers.” Professor Elliott H. Lieb Princeton University

Book The UNCITRAL Model Law after Twenty Five Years Global Perspectives on International Commercial Arbitration

Download or read book The UNCITRAL Model Law after Twenty Five Years Global Perspectives on International Commercial Arbitration written by Frédéric Bachand and published by Juris Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UNCITRAL Model Law after Twenty-Five Years: Global Perspectives on International Commercial Arbitration is a celebration of the Model Law’s significant contribution to international arbitration law. It assesses and evaluates the Model Law’s impact on the development of a universal arbitration law for a complex and mobile transnational community of lawyers, judges and arbitrators. Written from the perspective of counsel, arbitrators, legislators and judges, this collection is bold in its coverage of Model Law practice. It considers questions of legislative implementation; pre-award issues such as the review of arbitral jurisdiction and the production of evidence; post-award issues such as judicial review of arbitral awards; interpretation and harmonization methods; and questions of future reform. This is one of the only books on the market that considers the application of the UNCITRAL Model Law in both great depth and breadth, and from multiple perspectives. It provides critical assessments and evaluations of the impact that the Model Law has had after 25 years in various aspects of the arbitral process. The issues covered pertain to both substantive and procedural elements; theoretical and practical; historical and evolutional. The UNCITRAL Model Law after Twenty-Five Years: Global Perspectives on International Commercial Arbitration adopts a comparative approach and covers practice in nearly all Model Law countries and many others. As a seminal critique of the progress that the Model Law has made to date, this collection of articles will be of great benefit to judges, arbitrators, lawyers, academics and anyone interested in the future of international commercial arbitration.
