Book My Year of Living Spiritually

Download or read book My Year of Living Spiritually written by Anne Bokma and published by Douglas & McIntyre. This book was released on 2019-10-26 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2017, Anne Bokma embarked on a quest to become a more spiritual person. After leaving the fundamentalist religion of her youth, she became one of the eighty million North Americans who consider themselves spiritual-but-not-religious, the fastest growing “faith” category. In mid-life she found herself addicted to busyness, drinking too much, hooked on social media, dreading the empty nest and still struggling with alienation from her ultra-religious family. In response, she set out on a year-long whirlwind adventure to immerse herself in a variety of sacred practices—each of which proved to be illuminating in unexpected ways—to try to develop her own definition of what it means to be spiritual. In My Year of Living Spiritually, Bokma documents a diverse range of soulful first-person experiences—from taking a dip in Thoreau’s Walden Pond, to trying magic mushrooms for the first time, booking herself into a remote treehouse as an experiment in solitude, singing in a deathbed choir and enrolling in a week-long witch camp—in an entertaining and enlightening way that will compel readers (non-believers and believers alike) to try a few spiritual practices of their own. Along the way, she reconsiders key relationships in her life and begins to experience the greater depth of meaning, connection, gratitude, simplicity and inner peace that we all long for. Readers will find it an inspiring roadmap for their own spiritual journeys.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When life-changing pain is coupled with the welcoming of a new story for yourself, the word bittersweet just doesn't do it justice. You are quite literally in the middle - anchored between where you thought you were headed and where you're going now. In that uncertain middle space is where this story takes place, and maybe where you find yourself, too. The life Kelsey Baldwin had imagined for herself, the one she was right in the middle of, quickly crumbled around her on a single day as she was faced with a looming divorce while staring at a positive pregnancy test. It wasn't the way it was supposed to go. With each uncertain transition she went through - divorce, pregnancy, giving birth, moving cities, dating, raising a child without a partner - she clung to what she knew for sure: she was a strong girl and a brave girl, and the middle was not the ending. (Spoiler: that's why it's called the middle.)My story might look really different than yours, but I'm willing to bet you find threads from my messy middle that are also woven into yours.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a biography, but also more than that. Tolkien, one of the most celebrated authors of our time. This is the result of a thorough investigation, carried out between Spain and England, with the support, among others, of Priscilla Tolkien, daughter of the author, whose testimony provided previously unpublished insight into the connection between her father and Spain, through his guardian.

Book Getting Through It My Year of Cancer during Covid

Download or read book Getting Through It My Year of Cancer during Covid written by Helen Epstein and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2022-04-21 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just after Covid arrived in North America in spring 2020, journalist Helen Epstein was diagnosed with endometrial cancer — one of a predicted 66,570 new cases of cancer of the uterine body in the United States in 2021. About 600,000 American women have had it. A candid and eye-opening account of a medical steeplechase of surgery, chemo and radiation therapy, Getting Through It brings together reporting, statistical research and elements of memoir to tell a timely and important story about the changing nature of the contemporary medical world. Advance praise for Getting Through It: “In this eloquent narrative, journalist Helen Epstein brings her decades of skill to the tasks of chronicling the ‘badge of illness’ that a gynecological cancer diagnosis brought her. Unsparing in its measure of fear, chemically induced forgetting, and loss of control, we are treated to an honest appraisal of the cancer experience. This book is at once a reminder of our expectation of independence and the need for dependence that makes us deeply human.” — Susan M. Reverby, McLean Professor Emerita in the History of Ideas and Professor Emerita of Women’s and Gender Studies, Wellesley College “A fast read and eye-opening memoir that both doctors and patients will find valuable. Frank and funny, Epstein describes the myriad of life complexities, doubts, unanswered questions, and fears experienced by cancer patients and the people who love them.” — Audrey Konow, MD, Internist/Hospitalist, Providence St. Jude Medical Center “Getting Through It is a profoundly important book – not only for cancer patients, but for their families, friends, policy makers, and health care professionals. Epstein writes with breathtaking clarity about the challenges of undergoing treatment for a silent killer. Candid, compelling and psychologically astute.” — Helen Fremont, Author of After Long Silence and The Escape Artist “In this astonishingly candid book, Helen applies her laser focus to the day-to-day, sometimes minute-to-minute experience of experiencing cancer and its treatments during a pandemic. She describes a cast of fascinating doctors and nurses and the sometimes unexpected behavior of friends. Most beautiful is the inspiring portrait of her marriage with a partner who is there every step of the way. An enormously engaging, compulsively readable memoir.” — Susan Miron, Book Critic-at-Large

Book My Year in the Online Left

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eric W. Saeger
  • Publisher : Metro Clarion Media
  • Release : 2024-06-10
  • ISBN : 1732583536
  • Pages : 362 pages

Download or read book My Year in the Online Left written by Eric W. Saeger and published by Metro Clarion Media. This book was released on 2024-06-10 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2020, a veteran culture critic took on a social media experiment he called "Supersize Me Twitter" (he refuses to call it "X"). For one full year (which turned into four), he would post about politics every day on "leftist Twitter," but without "choosing a side" between Democrats, socialists, communists or progressives. This is the story of that bad idea and what he learned during that time. Informed by such thinkers as Alvin Toffler, Barbara Ehrenreich, Chalmers Johnson, Mark Blyth, Michael Hudson, Clara Mattei, Robert Ovetz, Steve Keen and dozens of others, this book is intended as a "travel guide" for activists, organizers and curiosity seekers alike. It demystifies such recent developments as the decline of corporate social media platforms, the rise of independent media (the "Fifth Estate") as it replaces the mainstream media, "punk economics," divisions within the "online left" itself, and why the US economic system has entered its "late stage capitalism" phase. The second book from Russian Nazi Troll Bots author Eric Saeger examines what a "unified online left" could accomplish by coming to agreement on real-world objectives, combatting divisive propaganda and joining forces, first by looking at alternative social media platforms, then by looking at the commonalities and differences between liberals and "farther-leftists," and finally by offering practical advice on activist strategies like hashtag campaigns and other techniques that could potentially augment the work of organizers involved in labor, climate and other areas of activism.

The intriguing story of a deliveryman who meets the world's smartest person and learns the secret of reality is threaded with a variety of hypnosis techniques that Adams, a certified hypnotist, used to induce a feeling of euphoric enlightenment in readers to mirror the main character's feelings as he discovers the true nature of the universe.Launched to coincide with the hardcover publication of its sequel, The Religion War (see opposite page), this first paperback edition of God's Debris will soon make the leap to a broader audience. As Adams designed it, the book will "make your brain spin around inside your skull" and drive readers toward The Religion War as they seek to confirm or deny the dizzying impressions and chaotic memories of reading God's Debris. The book provides one of the most compelling visions of reality ever experienced on the printed page. Along the way, readers will enjoy the Thought Experiment: Trying to discover what's wrong with the sage's explanation of reality. This is a book, as Adams says, to be shared and savored with smart friends.

Book Sixty A Diary My Year of Aging Semi Gracefully

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This is the thing, you see: I am on my way to being an old man. But at sixty, I am still the youngest of old men.” As acclaimed journalist and author Ian Brown’s sixtieth birthday loomed, every moment seemed to present a choice: Confront, or deny, the biological fact that the end was now closer than the beginning. Brown chose instead to notice every moment—to try to capture precisely what he was experiencing, without panicking. Sixty is the result: an uncensored, seriocomic report, a slalom of day-to-day dramas (as husband, father, brother, friend, and neighbor), inquisitive reporting, and acute insights from the line between middle-aged and soon-to-be-elderly.

Book My Year of Not Getting Sh tfaced

Download or read book My Year of Not Getting Sh tfaced written by Pamela Power and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2023-03-08 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After an exceptionally wild Mother's Day where she danced like there was no tomorrow, picked a fight with a stranger and collided with the floor, Johannesburg scriptwriter and author, Pamela Power, is forced to take a hard look at her drinking habits. She realises that although she does not need to find an AA group immediately, she might be a serial binge drinker and needs to take back control. In this honest, yet humorous account of her year of not getting sh*tfaced, Pamela examines her long relationship with alcohol. She is shocked to realise just how much of a crutch alcohol has been for her. There is always a bottle of wine or prosecco around to help her manage the many demands of life as a freelancer and a parent. Pamela starts her journey to sobriety at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic as her family faces financial troubles and life in the suburban parks of Johannesburg isn't so blissful anymore. Through her, we experience all the frustration, irritation and surprising benefits of going dry. In dealing with her dependence on alcohol, Pamela also confronts her troubled relationship with her parents. While many other sober-curious books portray sobriety as the only answer, in the end Pam finds a sweet spot between total sobriety and binge drinking: moderation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are Christians capable of believing? Is it faith or delusion? Or is there something wrong with me? I do not believe in spirits, gods, miracles, resurrection or eternal life. But I will seek to cast off my prejudices and give God a chance. At least for a year. Danish writer Svend Brinkmann spent a year with God, exploring faith and religion through the eyes of a sceptic. Each month, from January to December, he grappled with questions that had nagged at him since he was a child: Why does God let the innocent suffer? Does science disprove the existence of God? Does faith make you a better person? Can you doubt and still believe? It became a year of deep reflection and surprising revelations that challenged the bounds of his scientific worldview and led him to a new appreciation of faith and its place within a secular, mostly fulfilled life.

Book Back to Troublesome Creek

Download or read book Back to Troublesome Creek written by Duane Acker and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A former university president tells about his later encounters in the federal bureaucracy, including an agency with more people than work to be done and how special projects get included in appropriation bills. He also relates global encounters, including a four-acre Philippine farm that financed two children through college, Guatemalans being paid with food aid for digging the trenches for their sewer system, a Bolivian farmer proudly showing his harvest of drying coca leaves, and Eastern Europeans difficult transition to free enterprise. Back in Washington, he describes political pressure to finance a cigarette manufacturing line in Turkey and a pork research center in his home state, and how membership in his home town country club risked his nomination to be assistant secretary of agriculture. Returning to operate his home farm yielded more anecdotes, including a near collision in the cornfield with a somersaulting Plymouth, potential embarrassment of dragging an implements tongue mid-field, and the obstacles in building an egg layer facility that now employs twenty eight local people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Called “remarkable” (The Wall Street Journal) and “an ambitious, colossal debut novel” (Publishers Weekly), Helen DeWitt’s The Last Samurai is back in print at last Helen DeWitt’s 2000 debut, The Last Samurai, was “destined to become a cult classic” (Miramax). The enterprising publisher sold the rights in twenty countries, so “Why not just, ‘destined to become a classic?’” (Garth Risk Hallberg) And why must cultists tell the uninitiated it has nothing to do with Tom Cruise? Sibylla, an American-at-Oxford turned loose on London, finds herself trapped as a single mother after a misguided one-night stand. High-minded principles of child-rearing work disastrously well. J. S. Mill (taught Greek at three) and Yo Yo Ma (Bach at two) claimed the methods would work with any child; when these succeed with the boy Ludo, he causes havoc at school and is home again in a month. (Is he a prodigy, a genius? Readers looking over Ludo’s shoulder find themselves easily reading Greek and more.) Lacking male role models for a fatherless boy, Sibylla turns to endless replays of Kurosawa’s masterpiece Seven Samurai. But Ludo is obsessed with the one thing he wants and doesn’t know: his father’s name. At eleven, inspired by his own take on the classic film, he sets out on a secret quest for the father he never knew. He’ll be punched, sliced, and threatened with retribution. He may not live to see twelve. Or he may find a real samurai and save a mother who thinks boredom a fate worse than death.
