Many are unaware that East Toledo's verdant urban woodlands sprang from the work of just one man or that a local girl's meteoric rise in Golden Age Hollywood saw her play alongside Groucho Marx. Fewer still have heard of Officer Dell Hair, crime fighter and rhyme maker who walked the beat and walked into the history books as a celebrated cop-poet. These tales and more await as award-winning local broadcaster Lou Hebert shines a light into the forgotten corners of Glass City history.

Book excerpt: Toledo began the 20th century as it had ended the 19th—with a rapid expansion in industrialization, urbanization, and immigration. The titans of industry who shaped Toledo's early history continued to expand their fortunes and were joined by others who took advantage of the city's potential. A new industry emerged from the bicycle factories and wagon works of the 19th century—the automobile industry. It would dominate Toledo's economy in the 20th century. In addition to Jeeps, scales, glass, spark plugs, and transmissions, Toledo was also known for its civic reforms, strong labor unions, and fine cultural institutions during the 20th century. While Toledo never became “The Future Great City of the World” that Jesup Scott envisioned or even the futuristic “Toledo Tomorrow” that Norman Bel Geddes imagined, by the end of the 20th century, it was a successful city with an interesting past and a hopeful future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Facts and Historical Events of the Toledo War of 1835: As Connected With the First Session of the Court of Common Pleas of Lucas County, Ohio At the semi-annual meeting of the Raisin Valley Historical Society, held at Tecumseh, Michigan, December 22d, 1868, at the close of an able and important address on the subject of the "Toledo War," the following Resolution was unanimously adopted: Resolved, That the address of the Hon. W. V. Way, of Perrysburg, Ohio, on the "Toledo War," with such modifications as may be desired, if any, by the writer, be requested for publication by this Society. Dear Sir: Herewith we transmit you a copy of the Resolution adopted by the Raisin Valley Historical Society, requesting for publication your impartial history of the almost forgotten "Toledo War." This history is of renewed interest and importance to our people at this time, in view of the petition of the citizens of Lake Superior district to the Legislature of Michigan to re-cede to the United States, so much of our Upper Peninsula as was annexed by an act of Congress to Michigan, in exchange for the loss of territory on our Southern border. The petitioners desire the formation of a Territorial government over the Upper Peninsula, with the hope of obtaining material aid from Congress to develops its natural wealth, until admitted in the Uinon as a separate State. If Michigan generously accedes to the prayer of the petitioners, will Ohio be equally generous and return to us the "disputed territory," made classic in our history during the "Toledo War," as the battle ground of pioneer chivalry? Book excerpt: By World War I, Toledo's prosperity paralleled the growing popularity of the automobile, which transported citizens to impressive homes along the Maumee River, Ottawa Hills, Westmoreland, and Old Orchard. After World War II, stores, theaters, and businesses migrated out of 19th-century city boundaries as well. Toledo in the 1920s and 1930s boasted elegant department stores, the Commodore Perry Hotel, the towering new Ohio Building, and the legendary Paramount Theater. Great expressions of faith, Rosary Cathedral and Doc Hettinger's "Garden of Eden," were built. Depression years saw the Zoo, the University of Toledo, and the Peristyle at the Art Museum built. Toledo innovations, glass block and vitrolite, were used to great effect at the new Main Library building.

Book excerpt: The last place most 19th-century settlers wanted to move was the swampy, fever-ridden Toledo area. However, with the assistance of Irish and German immigrants, among others, Toledo was transformed from a village into a thriving city within 50 years. Captured here is the growth and expansion of the area through the indelible contributions of Toledo's architects. In 1850, Toledo had only 3,800 residents, but the introduction of canals and railroads quadrupled the population. Designated as the new county seat, major public buildings and hotels were built. Isaiah Rogers, one of the most famous architects in the nation, designed the Oliver House Hotel; Toledo's first architect, Frank Scott, planned many notable landscapes in the city as well as some of the most interesting houses; and designing almost every major commercial building in the city was Charles Crosby Miller. All of these, as well as David Stine and Edward Fallis, infused Toledo's pride into local landmarks of the past and present, including the Boody House, the Wheeler Opera House, the mansions of Collingwood Avenue, and the churches and breweries that complete Toledo's neighborhoods and downtown.
