  • Pages : 396 pages

Download or read book North Macedonia written by Thammy Evans and published by Bradt Travel Guides. This book was released on 2019-06-06 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bradt's North Macedonia remains the only standalone English-language guidebook to this increasingly popular destination available outside the country. Originally written by Thammy Evans, a political analyst who lived in Macedonia for five years, this new edition has been thoroughly updated and restructured to make it even easier to use by Philip Briggs, arguably the world's most experienced guidebook writer. Coverage of national parks has been increased and hiking information has been fully integrated to make it more accessible to casual users. Introductions to many points of interest have been expanded to give more of an overview of what the attractions are and there are several new and redrawn maps. Of all the new countries formed following the break-up of Yugoslavia in 1991, Macedonia was the only one to attain independence without bloodshed. This is a small land that offers huge variety to travellers, from the oldest lake in Europe to soaring forest-swathed mountain ranges and from the millennia-old Neolithic rock observatory at Kokoni and Roman mosaics at Heraclea, to dozens of historic and actively-used mediaeval monasteries and mosques. Macedonia's urban centrepiece and main port of entry is the capital Skopje, now home to a wealth of Ottoman buildings, a lively culinary scene, and several world-class museums, while the main tourist hub is the pretty lakeshore town of Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its wealth of medieval churches and other architectural gems. A trio of national parks provide refuge to brown bears, grey wolves, the rare Balkan lynx and a wide variety of birds. And wherever you go, welcoming family-run tavernas and lively pavement cafés serve authentic traditional cooking and locally produced wine that ranks as probably the most affordable anywhere in the European Balkans. Wherever you go and whatever your interest, this is a country that offers countless rewards to independent-minded travellers and those who want to get away from the crowds. And with Bradt's Macedonia, you'll find everything you need for a successful trip.

Book A History of the Jews in Macedonia

Download or read book A History of the Jews in Macedonia written by Aleksandar Matkovski and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the Jews in the entire area of Macedonia, including Vardar Macedonia (the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia) and parts of Macedonia belonging to Greece and Bulgaria. Ch. 5 (p. 88-96), "The Onset of Nazism and the Second World War", discusses briefly German antisemitism in the 19th-20th centuries, the war, and the Holocaust. Ch. 7 (p. 108-206), "The Deportation and Liquidation of the Jews of Macedonia", describes anti-Jewish measures of Bulgarian authorities in Vardar Macedonia, including economic restrictions and the return of Serbian Jewish refugees to German-occupied Serbia. Dwells on the deportation of Jews by the Bulgarians from Vardar Macedonia and Aegean Macedonia to Treblinka in March 1943. The deportation from Vardar Macedonia was preceded by the establishment of a detention camp in Skopje, where ca. 7,300 Jews were interned. Dwells also on the deportation of Jews from Salonika. Contends that the Bulgarians did not permit the Germans to deport the Bulgarian Jews, because in 1943 Germany already was loosing the war, and Bulgarian leaders sought a way out of the cul-de-sac of their partnership with the Nazis. Only the Italians in their occupation zone in Vardar Macedonia were able to protect the Jews.

Book excerpt: German students of urban and regional planning from Berlin and Macedonian students of urban planning and architecture from Skopje will examine the construction of remembrance and its representation in the urban space of Skopje. Besides giving presentations on the theme, during a workshop in May the students will investigate specific sites of remembrance in Skopje and locate their nexuses of significance within different social contexts. Behind the ethnic divisions of the population lies the question of the similarities and differences between the various remembrance constructs. The workshop culminates in a presentation of the results and an exhibition in Skopje. At the final follow-up in Berlin the planned publication of the results will be arranged and the exhibition in Berlin organised
