Download or read book This War Ain t Over written by Nina Silber and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Deal era witnessed a surprising surge in popular engagement with the history and memory of the Civil War era. From the omnipresent book and film Gone with the Wind and the scores of popular theater productions to Aaron Copeland's "A Lincoln Portrait," it was hard to miss America's fascination with the war in the 1930s and 1940s. Nina Silber deftly examines the often conflicting and politically contentious ways in which Americans remembered the Civil War era during the years of the Depression, the New Deal, and World War II. In doing so, she reveals how the debates and events of that earlier period resonated so profoundly with New Deal rhetoric about state power, emerging civil rights activism, labor organizing and trade unionism, and popular culture in wartime. At the heart of this book is an examination of how historical memory offers people a means of understanding and defining themselves in the present. Silber reveals how, during a moment of enormous national turmoil, the events and personages of the Civil War provided a framework for reassessing national identity, class conflict, and racial and ethnic division. The New Deal era may have been the first time Civil War memory loomed so large for the nation as a whole, but, as the present moment suggests, it was hardly the last.

Download or read book My War Gone By I Miss It So written by Anthony Loyd and published by September Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-03 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Undoubtedly the most powerful and immediate book to emerge from the Balkan horror of ethnic civil war' Antony Beevor, Daily Telegraph In 1993, Anthony Loyd hitchhiked to the Balkans hoping to become a journalist. Leaving behind him the legends of a distinguished military family, he wanted to see 'a real war' for himself. In Bosnia he found one. The cruelty and chaos of the conflict both appalled and embraced him; the adrenalin lure of the action perhaps the loudest siren call of all. In the midst of the daily life-and-death struggle among Bosnia's Serbs, Croats and Muslims, Loyd was inspired by the extraordinary human fortitude he discovered. But returning home he found the void of peacetime too painful to bear, and so began a longstanding personal battle with drug abuse. This harrowing account shows humanity at its worst and best. It is a breathtaking feat of reportage; an uncompromising look at the terrifyingly seductive power of war. 'As good as reporting gets. I have nowhere read a more vivid account of frontline fear and survival. Forget the strategic overview. All war is local' Martin Bell, The Times

Book excerpt: For six months in 1942, Stalingrad is the center of a titanic struggle between the Russian and German armies—the bloodiest campaign in mankind's long history of warfare. The outcome is pivotal. If Hitler's forces are not stopped, Russia will fall. And with it, the world.... German soldiers call the battle Rattenkrieg, War of the Rats. The combat is horrific, as soldiers die in the smoking cellars and trenches of a ruined city. Through this twisted carnage stalk two men—one Russian, one German—each the top sniper in his respective army. These two marksmen are equally matched in both skill and tenacity. Each man has his own mission: to find his counterpart—and kill him. But an American woman trapped in Russia complicates this extraordinary duel. Joining the Russian sniper's cadre, she soon becomes one of his most talented assassins—and perhaps his greatest weakness. Based on a true story, this is the harrowing tale of two adversaries enmeshed in their own private war—and whose fortunes will help decide the fate of the world.

It deals with a world that military history has preferred to ignore: the impact of war on wives, mothers, sons, daughters, relatives, friends - and on the soldiers themselves, once they were left to their own resources. The book contains their anguished correspondence to Prime Minister, John Curtin, which gives a keen insight into the suffering of families.
Download or read book Damn This War written by Julie Hankey and published by Icon Books. This book was released on 2023-11-09 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The love story of Zippa and Tony is nothing without the context of the Second World War. The war introduced them - they met as blackout wardens in London. It gave them darkened streets to wander in, hand in hand, then, by sending Tony away to officer training camps, it sharpened their hunger for each other, casting a glow over his comings and goings. It turned them into schemers and wanglers against fate and army regulations. It pressed them into marriage, and when the war decided to deploy him to North Africa, it whispered the urgent question of a baby. To which Tony, thinking of the war, replied maybe not; and Zippa, thinking of the war, said yes. In spite of themselves, the war experience was changing them both, and yet both were hanging on, looking back, suspended in memory and time, and living from letter to letter. Decades later, their daughter Julie discovered their letters, and piecing them together began to create a portrait of her parents and their relationship that was completely unfamiliar to her. Vivid, honest and completely absorbing, Damn This War! is a true insight into a wartime love story.
Download or read book This War So Horrible written by Hiram Smith Williams and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2006-09-03 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hiram Smith Williams, born in New Jersey, was an unusual individual. A skilled carriagemaker and carpenter, he traveled throughout the Midwest in the 1850s as an organizer for the Know Nothing Party and the candidacy of Martin Van Buren. When Van Buren failed to win the presidency in 1856, Williams spent two years wandering around Missouri, teaching school and writing poetry. In addition to his political activities, he served as a correspondent for several midwestern newspapers." "In 1859, Williams settled in Livingston, Alabama, where he worked as a carriagemaker. He quickly identified with the people around him and when the Civil War erupted in 1861, he supported the Southern cause. In 1862, he enlisted in the 40th Alabama Infantry Regiment, and through 1863 he served on detached duty as a skilled naval carpenter in Mobile. While in Mobile, Williams was active in the cultural and social life of the city and frequently appeared in plays as a semi-professional actor." "In 1864, he was reassigned to his regiment, part of the Army of Tennessee, which was camped in Dalton, Georgia. From February 1864 until autumn of that year, he participated in the Atlanta campaign as a member of a Pioneer unit, which was composed of men with construction skills. In that capacity he helped build bridges, roads, and fortifications, came in close contact with various headquarters, and sometimes worked as a hospital orderly. In late 1864, he accompanied the remnants of the Army of Tennessee on its retreat from Atlanta into Alabama. He then rejoined the 40th on duty in defense of Mobile harbor until March 1865, when he rejoined the Army of Tennessee in its attempt to stop Sherman." "Williams was taken prisoner just a few days before the end of the war, and spent three months in a prison camp at Point Lookout, Maryland. His diary records the anxiety of the prisoners in Federal camps immediately after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the harsh living conditions, and the continual desire for repatriation." "This War So Horrible is a remarkable diary. It provides a rare look at the concerns, activities, and experiences of the common soldier in a major Confederate Army during a critical campaign. What makes it so unusual is that Williams was well educated and literate. He did not write terse entries in his diary, but rather expounded at length on what he saw, felt, and hoped. While not anti-Southern, Williams was intensely anti-war and anti-military. Civil War students will find this diary useful because it is the only fully descriptive record of a member of the Pioneer Corps. Little is known about how these units operated and what the internal organization was like. The editors have deliberately chosen to let Williams speak for himself ... and the readers will find him lucid, cogent, compelling, and always interesting."--Jacket.
