Book excerpt: An atmospheric and utterly compelling debut novel about a Jamaican immigrant living in postwar London, This Lovely City shows that new arrivals have always been the prime suspects — but that even in the face of anger and fear, there is always hope. London, 1950. With the war over and London still rebuilding, jazz musician Lawrie Matthews has answered England’s call for labour. Arriving from Jamaica aboard the Empire Windrush, he’s rented a tiny room in south London and fallen in love with the girl next door. Playing in Soho’s jazz clubs by night and pacing the streets as a postman by day, Lawrie has poured his heart into his new home — and it’s alive with possibility. Until one morning, while crossing a misty common, he makes a terrible discovery. As the local community rallies, fingers of blame point at those who were recently welcomed with open arms. And before long, London’s newest arrivals become the prime suspects in a tragedy that threatens to tear the city apart. Immersive, poignant, and utterly compelling, Louise Hare’s debut examines the complexities of love and belonging, and teaches us that even in the face of anger and fear, there is always hope.

Book excerpt: “Super cinematic and every bit as Agatha Christie-esque as its sounds... ifyou like murder mysteries, pick this one up!” -Emily Henry, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Book Lovers Named A Most Anticipated Mystery of Summer by Betches, Essence, Crime Reads and more! The glittering RMS Queen Mary. A nightclub singer on the run. An aristocratic family with secrets worth killing for. London, 1936. Lena Aldridge wonders if life has passed her by. The dazzling theatre career she hoped for hasn’t worked out. Instead, she’s stuck singing in a sticky-floored basement club in Soho, and her married lover has just left her. But Lena has always had a complicated life, one shrouded in mystery as a mixed-race girl passing for white in a city unforgiving of her true racial heritage. She’s feeling utterly hopeless until a stranger offers her the chance of a lifetime: a starring role on Broadway and a first-class ticket on the Queen Mary bound for New York. After a murder at the club, the timing couldn’t be better, and Lena jumps at the chance to escape England. But death follows her onboard when an obscenely wealthy family draws her into their fold just as one among them is killed in a chillingly familiar way. As Lena navigates the Abernathy’s increasingly bizarre family dynamic, she realizes that her greatest performance won't be for an audience, but for her life. With seductive glamor, simmering family drama, and dizzying twists, Louise Hare makes her beguiling US debut.

Book The City of Dreaming Books

Download or read book The City of Dreaming Books written by Walter Moers and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2008-09-02 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this whimsical fantasy adventure, a novelist’s search for an author takes him to a magical city, a villainous literary scholar, and perilous catacombs. Optimus Yarnspinner’s search for an author’s identity takes him to Bookholm―the so-called City of Dreaming Books. On entering its streets, our hero feels as if he has opened the door of a gigantic second-hand bookshop. His nostrils are assailed by clouds of book dust, the stimulating scent of ancient leather, and the tang of printer’s ink. Soon, though, Yarnspinner falls into the clutches of the city’s evil genius, Pfistomel Smyke, who treacherously maroons him in the labyrinthine catacombs underneath the city, where reading books can be genuinely dangerous . . . In The City of Dreaming Books, Walter Moers transports us to a magical world where reading is a remarkable adventure. Only those intrepid souls who are prepared to join Yarnspinner on his perilous journey should read this book. We wish the rest of you a long, safe, unutterably dull, and boring life! Praise for The City of Dreaming Books “German author and cartoonist Moers returns to the mythical lost continent of Zamonia in his uproarious third fantasy adventure to be translated into English, a delightfully imaginative mélange of Shel Silverstein zaniness and oddball anthropomorphism à la Terry Pratchett’s Discworld. . . . A wonderfully whimsical story that will appeal to readers of all ages.” —Publishers Weekly “A salmagundi of whimsy, imagination and book lore—remarkable fun.” —Cleveland Plain Dealer “Moers puts Tolkien through some sort of Willy Wonka sweetening process and comes up with characters such as Optimus Yarnspinner, who, names being fate and all, just has to be a storyteller.” —Kirkus Reviews

Edmund White, who lived in Paris for sixteen years, wanders through the streets and avenues and along the quays, into parts of Paris virtually unknown to visitors and indeed to many Parisians. In the hands of the learned White, a walk through Paris is both a tour of its lush, sometimes prurient history, and an evocation of the city's spirit. The Flaneur leads us to bookshops and boutiques, monuments and palaces, giving us a glimpse the inner human drama. Originally published as part of Bloomsbury's Writer and the City series, this book has sold consistently over the years, and will find a whole new audience in paperback.

A woman of intelligence, conviction and courage. A woman born in a small town with big dreams. A woman much like many other women in America in her mid thirties slowly venturing along the crossroads of time bringing to full view the reflection of a female engulfed in past failures, fearful of future successes and searching for the solace that will mend the scars of a broken past. Under the smokescreen of a mid-life crisis, she emerges out of the ashes of yesterday's burnt romances and ignites a new flame of invigorated and renewed hope. In the complexity of the process, she finds the simple vision of her true self. Move with her through the trials, tribulations and triumphs in searching for that storybook perfect male image. Along her fallacy of fantasy, her world is laced with the linings of an often harsh yet profound reality. Looking for a comfort zone within the corridors of masculinity she searches diligently for hope, vision and guidance. Her search is not uncommon for it is shared by the masses of her gender population. Beneath the laughter and the pain, the sorrow and the narrow gain, she uncovers the shadowed mystery of self-love and the gallant glory of self-motivation. Her story will bridge through the hearts of America like loud thunder on a stormy night. Her pain will pierce the skin as quickly as the sharpest knife used by this country's greatest chefs. Her search for the often distant truth yet unveiled shall rivet your soul into a state of motionless drama and surround your very essence. For in an imperfect world, the truth is a mere shadow of total perfection as we all move venomously along the PASSAGE OF LIFE

Book excerpt: The Nordic Adventure: An Enlightening Introduction to Scandinavia is a distinctively powerful traveler’s memoir, which captured some of the enthralling, and sometime challenging, experiences of both Author and Celeta, husband and wife, who spent twelve exciting days touring Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Certainly, this intriguing traveler’s memoir captured some of the exciting and heartwarming experiences this loving couple had as they traveled from their home state of New York and privately toured the cities of Copenhagen, Oslo, Flam, Bergen, Stockholm, and Helsinki. Although the introduction to each of these Nordic countries was very brief, this loving husband and wife had magnificent sightseeing opportunities. All of the Nordic cities visited were aptly equipped with very knowledgeable tour guides who were brilliant in acquainting us with the social, political, cultural, and religious aspects of their city. Hence, this husband and wife were able to see the splendor and beauty of each of those fascinating cities. We walked through various sections of the inner cities and saw gorgeous parks and flower gardens. We saw beautiful and excited children enjoying their day at play. We also saw beautiful homes and neighborhoods. We saw the beauty of a peaceful people. Unquestionably, touring the capital cities of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland was a marvelous delight to us. After these countries had been described to us as a romantic lands of beautiful hills and mountains and gorgeous landscape, we discovered that the delights of Scandinavia were even more exciting. It was indeed a land of romance! Certainly, asking pertinent questions about the customs and mystique of each country, we feel much more informed about those Nordic countries and their people. After twelve exciting days of Scandinavian touring, we feel much more enlightened on the customs of these beautiful Nordic people. Last of all, our joyous visit to these Scandinavian countries was a joyful learning experience for both of us. We now understand more fully what is meant when one says that the Scandinavian people lived under the concept of the Nordic welfare model. Above all, we had a delightful, fun filled Nordic adventure. To God be the glory!

Book excerpt: This book examines urban experience from the vantage point of the global South. Drawing upon narratives coming from three key axes—communities, neighbourhoods, and market places—it lays bare the specificities of urban experience in contemporary Surat. It discusses a host of issues, including the ambiguity of urban experience, its uncomfortable ties with frames of the capital, and the politics of urban belonging that operate at multiple levels, shaping the contours of urban society. Musing on the subjectivities pertaining to the social and the spatial in a milieu of a fast-transforming urban landscape of Surat, Gujarat, the book is an exploration of how people perceive and associate with their surroundings, how they aspire, how they stigmatise others, the relation between the city and its migrants and castes, and at a broader level, between the capital and the city. An important contribution to the study of cities, the volume sheds light on how urban experience can be approached as a socially and spatially embedded concept. It will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of social history, urban sociology, urban studies, global South, and South Asia.

Book Journey to Italy

  • Author : Marquis de Sade
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2020-05-12
  • ISBN : 1487533063
  • Pages : 833 pages

Download or read book Journey to Italy written by Marquis de Sade and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1775, the young Count de Sade decided to turn a flight from legal trouble into an opportunity to undertake the "grand tour." He transformed his sojourns in Florence, Rome, Naples, and their environs into a philosophical travelogue; alongside advice on where to go and what to see, his Journey to Italy would include analyses of local customs and institutions, history and politics, natural phenomena, and the development of the arts. For today’s readers, Journey to Italy provides remarkable portraits of major Italian cities and the surrounding countryside, vivid accounts of aristocratic and popular entertainments, and a clear sense of what it was like to be a tourist in eighteenth-century Italy – from scams, rough roads, and unreliable guidebooks to learned interlocutors, balls, and nights at the opera. We witness Sade learning about the lives of Roman emperors, the machinations and misdeeds of pontiffs, the power struggles of the Medici, the ancient libertine world revealed by the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii, and a host of artistic examples and cultural practices – the material he would soon metamorphose into trenchant satire, gothic horror, and violent sexual fantasy. This book presents the first English translation of Sade’s unfinished and unpolished Journey to Italy along with his extensive dossiers of notations, sketches, plans, and correspondence. The translation is accompanied by extensive explanatory annotations and preceded by a critical introduction that provides biographical, artistic, historical, and intellectual context for Sade’s fascinating project, connecting his travels in and writings about Italy to his later famous and controversial works.
