Book excerpt: Excerpt from This Is the Furnishings Report of the Old House, 1966-1974, Vol. 10: The Adams National Historic Site, Quincy, Massachusetts Mr. Adams admired the 18th century ornamented brass thumb latch on the front door. This was Boston-made, he thought, since there were such craftsmen as John Clark, James Davis and William C. Hunneman who were known by his family. There was one very interesting characteristic of the front door; there was no keyhole. When I inquired about this, Mr. Adams explained that perhaps Leonard Vassall, the original builder, being from the West Indies had a household staff large enough that doors were always Opened for him. Then Mr. Adams remarked that here in Quincy, the inside of carriages of that period had no handles. A lady or a gentleman would have a frontman who sat beside the coach man and it was his duty to dismount and open and close the carriage door after the occupant was in or out. At the Old House since the time of John Adams. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Furnishings Report, Vol. 2: Sagamore Hill, Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, Oyster Bay, New York; Furnishing Plan The hall is clearly a passageway, having lost its living room character when the north room was built in 1905. Its furnishings reflect the post-presidential years, dominated as it is by the Cape buffalo, eland and oryx heads, elephant tusk gong, and other trophies of the ex-president's African trip and the World War I vintage shot-and-shell andirons. A 1918 photograph and the 1919 inventory of Theodore Roosevelt's estate, supplemented by Mrs. Roosevelt's 1948 estate inventory and 1948 photographs provide good documentation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isaac Vose was well known in his day among style-conscious Bostonians, his name synonymous with furniture of the highest quality and advanced design. His shop, the "first on Boston Neck," was in a prominent location and served as a familiar landmark in his South End neighborhood. Throughout the 1820s, 1830s, and as late as 1843, some nineteen years after Vose's death, auction advertisements explicitly cited his name as the maker of select furniture, with the association connoting quality and calculated to increase its sale price. This book gathers in one volume the known works of Vose as well as those attributed to him, and it is gorgeously illustrated throughout. The authors hope that Isaac Vose's work will gain recognition for its outstanding contributions to an American vision of classicism, albeit in Boston's more conservative, less "dashy" style.

Book To the Immortal Name and Memory of George Washington

Download or read book To the Immortal Name and Memory of George Washington written by Louis Torres and published by . This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Washington Monument is one of the most easily recognized structures in America, if not the world, yet the long and tortuous history of its construction is much less well known. Beginning with its sponsorship by the Washington National Monument Society and the grudging support of a largely indifferent Congress, the Monument's 1848 groundbreaking led only to a truncated obelisk, beset by attacks by the Know Nothing Party and lack of secured funding and, from the mid-1850s, to a twenty-year interregnum. It was only 1n 1876 that a Joint Commission of Congress revived the Monument and entrusted its completion to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In "To the Immortal Name and Memory of George Washington": The United States Corps of Engineers and the Construction of the Washington Monument, historian Louis Torres tells the fascinating story of the Monument, with a particular focus on the efforts of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Lincoln Casey, Captain George W. Davis, and civilian Corps employee Bernard Richardson Green and the details of how they completed the construction of this great American landmark. The book also includes a discussion and images of the various designs, some of them incredibly elaborate compared to the austere simplicity of the original, and an account of Corps stewardship of the Monument up to its takeover by the National Park Service in 1933. First published in 1985. 148 pages, ill.
