Book Breaking through Barriers

Download or read book Breaking through Barriers written by Sherrie Brown and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breaking Through Barriers is a collection of events centered around the good fortunes and the struggles that the author has experienced. The author relives many of life's trials, battles, and some happy times, that result through the impact of decision making. Life can be joyful and engaging, but sometimes can be fearful and demanding. But no matter what life throws at us, we sometimes must break through the barriers of different forms of dysfunction, long suffering, bad judgement, and a host of other negative struggles that may imprison our minds, immobilize our bodies, and harden our hearts to successfully uncover all of life's pleasures, that the author believes we are destined to experience. The author often mentions her Christian faith, and how believing in God may not be a reality for some but has drawn her own conclusions from the most printed book ever published, The Holy Bible. The Holy Bible speaks of a Savior called Jesus Christ, who broke through so many barriers to save mankind. The author feels so deeply about her beliefs. She wanted to capture the essence of the message of the cross on her book cover. The author wanted to express to her readers that, like Jesus, we all have a cross to bear in life. And whatever struggles you face to bear that cross, you must to win and succeed in life! The author's faith in God has helped her conquer a large portion of her challenges, and many barriers faced. Faith enabled her present understanding that God is love and love conquers all. If you love yourself and you love others as you do yourself""no matter the size, shape, color, nationality""the majority of life's battles are mostly won. Sometimes we fight against each other because we have no compassion or love for someone who does not look like us or share our same beliefs. Somehow we must strive to get past the outer image, the physical, and look with our hearts spiritually, to find that unconditional love that conquers all! The author thinks the world would be a much better place to live if we changed our hearts and our interactions with all people, to improve the human race.

Book Making Black Girls Count in Math Education

Download or read book Making Black Girls Count in Math Education written by Nicole M. Joseph and published by Harvard Education Press. This book was released on 2022-08-16 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Black Girls Count in Math Education explores the experiences of Black girls and women in mathematics from preschool to graduate school, deftly probing race and gender inequity in STEM fields. Nicole M. Joseph investigates factors that contribute to the glaring underrepresentation of Black female students in the mathematics pipeline. Joseph’s unflinching account calls attention to educational structures and practices that contribute to race- and gender-based stratification in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines. The author also disentangles a complex network of historical and sociopolitical elements that influence the perception and experiences of Black girls and women both inside and outside of mathematics education. In her clear-eyed assessment of the intersectional difficulties facing this marginalized group, Joseph offers a critical view of the existing mathematics education research, practice, and policies that have neglected Black girls and women; confronts the problematic history of mathematics education policy; and considers imbalances in the current teacher workforce in US mathematics programs. She then provides practical, actionable suggestions for reform. Joseph invites students, families, and educators, as well as researchers, policy makers, and other relevant stakeholders to disrupt systems, structures, and ideologies. She calls for an end to racism and sexism in many areas of mathematics education, including learning environments, curriculum design and implementation, and testing and assessments. An essential read for anyone concerned about supporting the mathematical learning and development of Black girls and women, this work advocates for coalition-building so that greater, more equitable opportunities for learning and engagement may be offered to Black female students.

Download or read book To Advance the Race written by Linda M. Perkins and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the United States' earliest days, African Americans considered education essential for their freedom and progress. Linda M. Perkins’s study ranges across educational and geographical settings to tell the stories of Black women and girls as students, professors, and administrators. Beginning with early efforts and the establishment of abolitionist colleges, Perkins follows the history of Black women's post–Civil War experiences at elite white schools and public universities in northern and midwestern states. Their presence in Black institutions like Howard University marked another advancement, as did Black women becoming professors and administrators. But such progress intersected with race and education in the postwar era. As gender questions sparked conflict between educated Black women and Black men, it forced the former to contend with traditional notions of women’s roles even as the 1960s opened educational opportunities for all African Americans. A first of its kind history, To Advance the Race is an enlightening look at African American women and their multi-generational commitment to the ideal of education as a collective achievement.

Book Twice as Hard

Download or read book Twice as Hard written by Jasmine Brown and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2023-01-24 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black women physicians’ stories have gone untold for far too long, leaving gaping holes in American medical history, in women’s history, and in black history. It’s time to set the record straight No real account of black women physicians in the US exists, and what little mention is made of these women in existing histories is often insubstantial or altogether incorrect. In this work of extensive research, Jasmine Brown offers a rich new perspective, penning the long-erased stories of nine pioneering black women physicians beginning in 1860, when a black woman first entered medical school. Brown champions these black women physicians, including the stories of: · Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, who graduated from medical school only fourteen months after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and provided medical care for the newly freed slaves who had been neglected and exploited by the medical system. · Dr. Edith Irby Jones, the first African American to attend a previously white-only medical school in the Jim Crow South, where she was not allowed to eat lunch with her classmates or use the women’s bathroom. Still, Dr. Irby Jones persisted and graduated from medical school, going on to directly inspire other black women to pursue medicine such as . . . · Dr. Joycelyn Elders, who, after meeting Dr. Irby Jones, changed her career ambitions from becoming a Dillard’s salesclerk to becoming a doctor. In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed Dr. Elders as the US surgeon general, making her the first African American and second woman to hold this position. Brown tells the stories of these doctors from the perspective of a black woman in medicine. Her journey as a medical student already has parallels to those of black women who entered medicine generations before her. What she uncovers about these women’s struggles, their need to work twice as hard and be twice as good, and their ultimate success serves as instruction and inspiration for new generations considering a career in medicine or science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracy Brown's Single Black Female is a taut, edgy, deftly spun novel about four friends grappling with the dramatic twists and turns of life, love and what it means to “make it” in America. Ivy Donovan is a successful stylist, entrepreneur, and single mom who has been loyal to her sons’ father, Michael, who’s serving a lengthy prison sentence. But life has gotten lonely over the years, and Ivy wants more for herself. Michael, however, isn’t about to lose his family. Coco Norris is well-off, single, childless, and struggling with her allegiance to emotionally unavailable men. When she finds a man who seems like he can give her everything she has ever wanted, Coco soon discovers that she has taken on more than she can possibly handle. Deja Maddox is a real estate agent who is married to Bobby, a police sergeant with the NYPD. They have assimilated, looking down on anything that doesn’t fit their buttoned-up, polished life. But Deja isn’t as satisfied as she would like everyone to believe. When Deja’s past returns with a vengeance, she’s forced to face herself as her “perfect” life begins to crumble. Nikki Diamond is a savvy, self-made businesswoman and social media darling who lives large and with no regrets. She’s also Deja’s little sister and thinks her sister can have so much more than her ho-hum marriage. And Nikki is all too happy to lend a “helping” hand to make that happen. Things come to a head when Ivy’s youngest son, Kingston, is caught up in a polarizing encounter with the NYPD. Everyone must figure out where they stand, including Bobby, who suddenly has to decide if his “blue life” matters more to him than his Black life and the Black lives of those he loves. Single Black Female highlights the nuances of Black love, the often tested bonds of Black families, what it means to face the world as a Black man and the joy and pain of being a Black woman.

Book A Black Girl in the Middle

Download or read book A Black Girl in the Middle written by Shenequa Golding and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A blazingly honest essay collection from a refreshing new voice exploring the in-between moments for Black women and girls, and what it means to simply exist “At thirty-seven years old I can say Shenequa is a big name and I’m a big, bold woman.” Shenequa Golding doesn’t aim to speak for all Black women. We’re too vast, too vibrant, and too complicated. As an adult, Golding begins to own her boldness, but growing up, she found herself “kind of in the middle,” fluctuating between not being the fly kid or the overachiever. Her debut collection of essays, A Black Girl in the Middle taps into life’s wins and losses, representing the middle ground for Black girls and women. Golding packs humor, curiosity, honesty, anger, and ultimately acceptance in 12 essays spanning her life in Queens, NY, as a first generation Jamaican American. She breaks down the 10 levels of Black Girl Math, from the hard glare to responses reserved for unfaithful boyfriends. She comes to terms with and heals from fraught relationships with her father, friends, and romantic partners. She takes the devastating news that she’s a Black girl with a “flat ass” in stride, and adds squats to her routine, eventually. From a harrowing encounter in a hotel room leading her to explore celibacy (for now) to embracing rather than fearing the “Milli Vanilli” of emotions in hurt and anger, Golding embraces everything she’s learned with wit, heart, and humility. A Black Girl in the Middle is both an acknowledgment of the complexity and pride of not always fitting in and validation of what Black girlhood and womanhood can be.
