He was a chaplain of the 1849 constitutional convention and served churches in San Francisco, Monterey, Santa Cruz, and Benecia. From 1862 to 1869 he headed the College of California at Berkeley, which was turned over to the University of California. Thirty years in California (1879) contains his recollections of Presbyterian congregations in Monterey and San Francisco and the founding of the Howard Presbyterian Church in Happy Valley. He describes religious and civil affairs in San Francisco through the 1850s and his role as head of the College of California.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Of California, for a Period of Thirty Years: Together With an Article on the Chinese Question We had contemplated publishing a book about two years ago, entitled Twenty-two Months an Itinerant in California. Our visit to the home of our childhood in Ohio at that time prevented the publication of the book, but very much of the statistics and numerous items intended for it have entered the history, and will no doubt serve a better purpose here than in the contemplated book. The map that we intended to publish would have cost too much to have justified us in making the financial sacrifice unless the subscribers list would have reached the number we called for when the announcement was made. The death of Rev. S. D. Ensley does not appear in the history. It was overlooked at the time for which we are sorry. His death is noticed in the minutes of 1868 as "having died during the last year." The resolution speaks of him in the highest terms, and offers words of sympathy to his bereaved family. We are very thankful to those who furnished us with items of interest for the volume now completed. Among the many who helped us are nearly all of the preachers now in the Conference. Rev. C. W. Gillett and wife will accept thanks for the Journals of Sloane and for their excellent Journal. Rev. Philemon Beck, also, for the early official records of the work in Yolo County. Rev. D. K. Flickinger is remembered for the indispensable help he gave us in the line of statistics and of engravings. We also thank Rev. G. W. Burtner for his very personal kindness to us in cases of extreme labors that were made lighter by his willing help. The article on the Chinese Question contained in the appendix is the result of close observation for several years. It is well for us to consider that there are matters connected with the disposal of the Asiatics among us that will involve questions of a kindred character too momentous for present undertaking. A question so completely interwoven with the very principles of our national existence and the sphere of our usefulness in the providence of God needs calmer thought than is fostered by an incited mob or an antipathetical politician urged on by his constituents. The writer speaks fearlessly and insists upon a fair and candid hearing. No vile invectives against these statements are needed. After 1904, Graves's professional life centers on his work as vice president and president of the Farmers & Merchants Bank, and his book details the banking community and his interests in orange growing and the petroleum industry.

He remained for only a year, returning to New York in 1859. A California tramp (1888) describes Kenderdine's adventures in 1858-1859: his trip west as a driver on a California wagon train, visits to San Francisco and life as tramp and ranch hand in Sonoma County. His memoir closes with his return via Panama in 1859. The last quarter of the book is a miscellany of Kenderdine's prose and poetry. Kenderdine's association with California was renewed almost forty years later when he made a second trip west; see his California revisited (1898).

Book excerpt: With this volume of the Casden Annual Review, we continue our policy of focusing on a single topic, and in this case the topic we have turned to is, quite literally, close to home: the Jewish role in California life. The aim of this volume is to stress the cultural aspects of the Jewish experience of coming to and living in the Golden State. While we cannot hope to present in this limited venue a comprehensive and detailed history of Jews in California, per se, it is our goal to consider a number of insightful perspectives on how the Jews, who settled in California, helped shape the Golden State's culture and were, in turn, themselves molded by cultural influences that were uniquely Californian. While this volume looks at the Jewish experience in California in general-nonetheless, particular emphasis is placed on Southern California. We begin our cultural history at a crucial moment in California history, the mid-nineteenth century in the after-glow of the California Gold Rush, where we encounter a European Jewish emigrant, fresh off the boat, who can (and did) get a chance to make a fortune in the pueblo of Los Angeles and, in doing so, helped define what California is. We conclude it with a personal, meditation from one of the latest group of refugees to come to the west, the Iranian Jews who were forced out of their ancient homeland some thirty years ago and who found in Southern California a particularly hospitable (yet no less difficult) place to transplant their cultural roots. In between, we are treated to a few choice snapshots of how life developed and changed for Jews in California as California itself evolved and grew. We firmly believe that there is something special about the Jewish role in California and even more so in Southern California-that here on the lower left-coast Jews have had an Americanization experience that is significantly different from that which Jews have had elsewhere in the USA.
