Download or read book Reassessing Early Safavid Art and History Thirty Five Years after Dickson Welch 1981 written by Abolala Soudavar and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Dickson once confided to Stuart Cary Welch "that twenty five years would pass before our fellow specialists would fully comprehend what we had achieved." The "achievement" he was referring to is the monumental double volume The Houghton Shahnama (1981), still ill-understood thirty five years later. Their "achievement" is a treasure trove of information that needs to be rediscovered and reused. Three recent papers that tried to discredit Dickson and Welch provided the impetus to revisit some of the complex manuscripts that they had analyzed, including the British Library Khamseh (O. 2265) and the Cartier Divan of Hafez, to discover historical details that provide a better insight into Safavid society.

Book excerpt: Filled with wit and wisdom, Thirty-Five Years of Bologna is the true story of Mike Pappas, a deli Manager who served up more bologna during his career than he cares to recall. Like a novel that interacts with a community of voices, Pappas writes in a style that involves the casual advice he picks up from his customers and some co-workers along the way. Thirty-Five Years of Bologna follows Pappas as he becomes a husband, father, and deli Manager and shares how he juggled working long hours with his busy home life. Pappas candidly retells humorous situations about an ever-changing pool of co-workers and managers who enter the deli scene as quickly as they leave. The picture Pappas paints will give you a new view of your neighborhood deli and the personalities that serve you sandwich meat and cheese. But Pappas ultimately learns that life isn't about the work you do, but the people you work with. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIRTY FIVE YEARS OF AUTOMATING MATHEMATICS: DEDICATED TO 35 YEARS OF DE BRUIJN'S AUTOMATH N. G. de Bruijn was a well established mathematician before deciding in 1967 at the age of 49 to work on a new direction related to Automating Mathematics. By then, his contributions in mathematics were numerous and extremely influential. His book on advanced asymptotic methods, North Holland 1958, was a classic and was subsequently turned into a book in the well known Dover book series. His work on combinatorics yielded influential notions and theorems of which we mention the de Bruijn-sequences of 1946 and the de Bruijn-Erdos theorem of 1948. De Bruijn's contributions to mathematics also included his work on generalized function theory, analytic number theory, optimal control, quasicrystals, the mathematical analysis of games and much more. In the 1960s de Bruijn became fascinated by the new computer technology and as a result, decided to start the new AUTOMATH project where he could check, with the help of the computer, the correctness of books of mathematics. In each area that de Bruijn approached, he shed a new light and was known for his originality and for making deep intellectual contributions. And when it came to automating mathematics, he again did it his way and introduced the highly influential AUTOMATH. In the past decade he has also been working on theories of the human brain.

Book excerpt: What's the big deal? Unlike a lot of people, Matt Beckford is actually looking forward to turning thirty. His twenties really weren't so great...and now he has his love life, his career, his finances -- even his record collection -- pretty much in order, like any good grown-up should. But when, out of the blue, Elaine announces she "can't do this anymore," Matt is left with the prospect of facing the big three-oh alone. Compounding his misery is the fact that he has to move back in with his parents. What's it all about, Alfie? Mum and Dad immediately start driving Matt up the wall, and emails from Elaine and nights out with his old school chum Gershwin aren't enough to snap Matt out of his existential funk. So he decides to track down more old schoolmates and see how they're handling this thirty thing. One by one, he gets in touch with the rest of the magnificent seven -- Pete, Bev, Katrina, Elliot, and Ginny, his former on-off girlfriend -- and soon the old gang is back together. But they're a lot older and a lot has changed and, even if he and Ginny still seem attracted to each other, you can't have an on-off girlfriend when you're thirty. Can you?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In January 1991 the Enoch Pratt Free Library opened the sealed manuscript of H. L. Mencken's "Thirty-five Years of Newspaper Work." Written in 1941-42 and bequeathed to the library under time-lock upon Mencken's death in 1956, it is among the very last of his papers opened to the public. Thirty-five Years of Newspaper Work, a one-volume abridgement of Mencken's much longer memoir, vividly pictures the excitement of newspaper life in the heyday of print journalism." "Here Mencken colorfully recalls his years - mostly with the Baltimore Evening Sun - as a reporter and a writer of editorials that always caused a stir among the public and uproars of indignation among his enemies. The volume includes important new material on his coverage of presidential candidates from 1912 to 1940 (Mencken on Harding's inaugural address: "a string of wet sponges") and the 1925 trial of the man he called the "infidel Scopes." Mencken also describes his brief stint as a war correspondent on Germany's subzero Eastern Front in 1917 and the perilous voyage back, which took him through Havana just as a revolution was breaking out. (He stayed to cover it.) He writes, with curious detachment, about the "inevitable" war and likely fate of Germany's Jews during a final visit to his ancestral homeland in summer 1938. And he describes colorful Baltimore personalities, shares local gossip, and offers candid - usually unflattering - portraits of the politicians and clerics he mostly despised."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would you do if you woke up one morning and learned you had lived for five years with a serial rapist/killer? How would you react especially when you knew he had been your stepfather? In this true story of Karen Woods, a fifty-something-year-old woman, you will learn how she reacted to that knowledge. When she was eight years old, her birth mother met and married Willie Roy Jenkins, a man who in 2013 was tried and convicted of committing the thirty-five-year-old Texas cold case rape and murder of a young woman. Enduring emotional and physical abuse from both, it so traumatized Karen that she suppressed that reality for over thirty-five years. Testifying at Willie's sentencing trial brought it all out into the open, plunging her into a raging depression that became full blown PTSD when she learned of his other victims. In this candid account of her life, she shares her sometimes rocky journey of healing given by the love of God. Karen tells her story in the hope that others suffering trauma will also find healing through God's love. Because with Him, all things are possible.
