These names will be found in the report and information concerning them should be sent to the secretary. Up to April 1, 1920, four hundred and thirty-seven 1908 men had subscribed to the Harvard Endowment Fund. In the number of individual subscribers the class of 1908 is ahead of all other Harvard classes. It is felt that the remaining members of the class will feel inclined to join with us in maintaining this record. The campaign for the Endowment Fund will be continued indefinitely and a sub scription, no matter how small, will be received at the Har vard Endowment Fund headquarters, 150 Nassau Street, New York City. In the preparation of this report the class has had the benefit of the services of Mrs. Clinton B. Willey of Newton ville, Massachusetts, whose previous experience in Harvard College work made it possible for her to render the most valuable assistance in this connection. Her ingenuity, per Sistence and skill have been largely responsible for the un usually thorough results which we are able to present in this report. Imperfect as it is, it represents much effort to get at facts and present them. As you note its errors and deficiencies, please take pen in hand at once, and send me the data for the needed corrections. In some cases many more details might have been given, had it been thought advisable. Some of these may be found in the Class Book; and many more can be gleaned from the Secretary's indexed scrap-books, which will afford those interested much information and entertainment. The number of stars placed on our roll during the ten years covered by this Report invites serious reflection. The list includes fifteen: Beaman, Brown, Bullard, Duncklee, Forbes, Gage, Giffen, E. P. Gould, Hale, Hardon, Johnson, H. S. Shurtleff, Waggener, Weld, and Wigglesworth; and there now survive only forty-four of us: while the very large proportion of the temporary members of the Class who have gone to the majority since our college life began is peculiarly noteworthy. Of our thirty-three temporary members only eleven are believed to be now living... Let me avail myself of this opportunity to present a summary of the war record of the Class. Of the one hundred and fifteen men connected with us (of whom eighty-one received the A.B. in 1861, or later, as belonging to the Class) one hundred and twelve were living when the Civil War broke out. More than half of these (i. e. fifty-seven) enlisted in the service of the United States, and five entered the army of the Confederacy. He evidently intended to give it the characteristic of intimacy, and to include reminiscences and personal details hitherto un published. We have attempted to follow his general scheme, though knowing that no one could complete it as well as he. We adopt also, as far as possible, the recommendation of the Com mittee of Class Secretaries for a uniform arrangement of material. Their scheme included a biographical summary, obviating refer ence to previous reports. This was anticipated by R. Stone in his preparation for our Fifth Report; and, with the exception of some matter from the Sixth, we have repeated nothing from previous issues. The delay resulting from the long illness of our Secretary and his lamented death has enabled us to bring our history four years beyond our fiftieth, and we feel assured of your approval in constructing the final report on the plan proposed by the classmate who for fifty-three years so faithfully served us, and whom sixty-one will ever hold in affectionate and grateful remembrance. Disappointed in this, I sought to put the work into the hands of others nearer the centre of '61's planetary system. Those hands closed, not on it, but against it; and so scrap-book, and Compendium, and letters, etc., have traveled a thousand miles to bring mingled pleasure and pain, fatigue and recreation to one already overtasked. If the Report seems, in everything but accuracy, quite suggestive of Bro. Sibley's Triennials, consider that it has been prepared, not at the Hub, abounding in information, but low down in the Mississippi Valley, where Harvard men do not congregate; and by one not luxuriating in elegant leisure, but engrossed by perplexing cares. I send it out, not be cause I think it is what a Class Report ought to be, but because, in my pres ent situation, I have a peculiar sympathy for those classmates, who are far away from Alma Mater; and because I believe that they will be so much pleased' with even a meagre collection of facts and figures, as to be willing to supply for themselves from fancy's stores, the needed elaboration. It will be noticed that corrections of, and additions to, the first Report, 'have been incorporated into the body of this, for convenience of reference. The response made this year by the Class to the appeal for information. Is quite gratifying; and points encouragingly to a day when this matter will receive proper attention from all.
