Book Third Harmonic Generation with Ultra high Intensity Laser Pulses

Download or read book Third Harmonic Generation with Ultra high Intensity Laser Pulses written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When an intense, plane-polarized, laser pulse interacts with a plasma, the relativistic nonlinearities induce a third harmonic polarization. A phase-locked growth of a third harmonic wave can take place, but the differences between the nonlinear dispersion of the pump and driven waves leads to a rapid unlocking, resulting in a saturation. What becomes third harmonic amplitude oscillations are identified here, and the nonlinear phase velocity and the renormalized electron mass due to plasmon screening are calculated. A simple phase-matching scheme, based on a resonant density modulation, is then proposed and analyzed.

Book excerpt: Plasma harmonics is a new field of laser spectroscopy. The use of the solid elements of the periodic table, together with thousands of complex solid-state samples, largely extends the range of materials employed in plasma harmonics in contrast to the few light rare gases that are typically used. Thus the exploration of practically any available solid-state material through nonlinear spectroscopy comprising laser ablation and harmonic generation can be considered a new tool for materials science. Plasma harmonic spectroscopy exploits the spectral and structural properties of various ablated solid-state materials by propagating short laser pulses through laser-produced plasma and generating high-order harmonics of ultrashort laser pulses. The book describes the special features of plasma harmonics in laser-produced ablation plumes and discusses a wide range of nonlinear medium characteristics that can be produced by varying the conditions of laser plume production on the surface of a solid. This book compiles and details cutting-edge research in science and medicine from the interdisciplinary team of the Michigan Nanotechnology Institute for Medicine and Biological Sciences, who are currently revolutionizing drug delivery techniques through the development of engineered nanodevices. Edited by Istvan J Majoros and James Baker, Jr., two prominent nanotechnology researchers, this book is designed for workers involved in nanotechnology, macromolecular science, cancer therapy, or drug delivery research.

Book The Study of the Interaction of Intense Picosecond Light Pulse with Materials A Theory of Third Harmonic Generation in an Isotropic Nonlinear Medium with Ultrashort Light Pulses

Download or read book The Study of the Interaction of Intense Picosecond Light Pulse with Materials A Theory of Third Harmonic Generation in an Isotropic Nonlinear Medium with Ultrashort Light Pulses written by Chi H. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report contains the development of a theory for third harmonic generation (THG) due to a broad band optical pulses such as existing in the picosecond time region. The theory is than applied to several examples. Specifically, Maxwell's equations are used as the starting point and a wave equation for the THG is developed for a uniform plane wave in a dielectric, isotropic medium. The material parameters considered are the nonlinear susceptibility giving rise to the third harmonic, the respective phase and group velocities, and the interaction length. Three examples consisting of a sine wave, a Gaussian pulse and a linearly chirped pulse are evaluated. (Author).

  • Author : S.L. Shapiro
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-06-29
  • ISBN : 3662225743
  • Pages : 397 pages

Download or read book Ultrashort Light Pulses written by S.L. Shapiro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after the invention of the laser, a brand-new area of endeavour emerged after the discovery that powerful ultrashort (picosecond) light pulses could be extracted from some lasers. Chemists, physicists, and engineers quickly recognized that such pulses would allow direct temporal studies of extremely rapid phenomena requiring, however, development of revolutionary ultrafast optical and electronic devices. For basic research the development of picosecond pulses was highly important because experimentalists were now able to measure directly the motions of atoms and molecules in liquids and solids: by disrupting a material from equilibrium with an intense picosecond pulse and then recording the time of return to the equilibrium state by picosecond techniques. Studies of picosecond laser pulses-their generation and diagnostic tech niques-are still undergoing a fairly rapid expansion, but a critical review of the state of the art by experienced workers in the field may be a timely help to new experimentalists. We shall review the sophisticated tools developed in the last ten years, including the modelocked picosecond-pulse-emitting lasers, the picosecond detection techniques, and picosecond devices. Moreover, we shall outline the basic foundations for the study of rapid events in chemistry and physics, which have emerged after many interesting experiments and which are now being applied in biology. An in-depth coverage of various aspects of the picosecond field should be helpful to scientists and engineers alike.

Book Few Cycle Laser Pulse Generation and Its Applications

Download or read book Few Cycle Laser Pulse Generation and Its Applications written by Franz X. Kärtner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-09-14 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the physics, technology and applications of short pulse laser sources that generate pulses with durations of only a few optical cycles. The basic design considerations for the different systems such as lasers, parametric amplifiers and external compression techniques which have emerged over the last decade are discussed to give researchers and graduate students a thorough introduction to this field. The existence of these sources has opened many new fields of research that were not possible before. These are UV and EUV generation from table-top systems using high-harmonic generation, frequency metrology enabling optical frequency counting, high-resolution optical coherence tomography, strong-field ultrafast solid-state processes and ultrafast spectroscopy, to mention only a few. Many new applications will follow. The book attempts to give a comprehensive, while not excessive, introduction to this exciting new field that serves both experienced researchers and graduate students entering the field. The first half of the book covers the current physical principles, processes and design guidelines to generate pulses in the optical range comprising only a few cycles of light. Such as the generation of relatively low energy pulses at high repetition rates directly from the laser, parametric generation of medium energy pulses and high-energy pulses at low repetition rates using external compression in hollow fibers. The applications cover the revolution in frequency metrology and high-resolution laser spectroscopy to electric field synthesis in the optical range as well as the emerging field of high-harmonic generation and attosecond science, high-resolution optical imaging and novel ultrafast dynamics in semiconductors. These fields benefit from the strong electric fields accompanying these pulses in solids and gases during events comprising only a few cycles of light.

Book The Study of the Interaction of Intense Picosecond Light Pulses with Materials

Download or read book The Study of the Interaction of Intense Picosecond Light Pulses with Materials written by Chi Hsing Lee and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report contains the summary of the works performed in the entire period of this grant. The two-photon and three-photon photoconductivity effects in various semiconductors were studied. The effect was then applied to measure the ultrashort optical pulses. Two-photon pump GaAs bulk laser action was demonstrated. A theoretical calculation on the optical third harmonic generation with broad band picosecond pulses was made. Finally various aspects of the nonlinear optical interaction at the boundary of nonlinear media were investigated. The data agreed well with Bloembergen and Pershan's theory. The observation of the nonlinear Brewster's angle was reported for the first time in a transparent medium. (Author).
