Book Optimal Thinning within the Faustmann Approach

Download or read book Optimal Thinning within the Faustmann Approach written by Renke Coordes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest stands are thinned all over the world. Yet, there was hitherto no consistent theory which allowed deriving unambiguous conditions for thinnings as the harvest of trees prior to the rotation age. Renke Coordes closes this gap by proposing a new, more general view on the Faustmann model as the basic investment model in forest resource economics. With the introduction of mutual interdependencies between the trees growing in a stand and the opportunity to harvest trees prior to the rotation age, optimal thinning regimes can be derived and analyzed. The implications of the proposed model are thoroughly discussed against the background of practical forest management decisions. The author closes with adaptations to the problems of the management of mixed, multiple-use and uneven-aged stands and entire forests. In this way, a unified perspective on the management of forests as natural resources is offered.

Shortly after his arrival, there are a series of seemingly unrelated murders in the quiet middle-class township. Unbeknownst to the detective, there is a serial murderer afoot, who is both clever and brutal in his attacks. Four murders go unsolved followed by the death of an earlier victim who survived the attack initially. As the detective believes he is closing in, he is badly injured when a truck, laying in wait for him, crashed into his car on his way home from work. A clever scheme by the detective and local law enforcement to catch the murderer in a trap backfires.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jon Derek Croteau brings a heady mixture of raw emotion, pathos, and humor to his powerful journey from self-hatred and punishment to self-affirmation and healing as a gay man in My Thinning Years. As a child, Jon tried desperately to be his father’s version of the all-American boy, denying his gayness in a futile attempt to earn the love and respect of an abusive man. With this he built a deep, internalized homophobia that made him want to disappear rather than live with the truth about himself. That denial played out in the forms of anorexia, bulimia, and obsessive running, which consumed him as an adolescent and young adult. It wasn’t until a grueling yet transformative Outward Bound experience that Jon began to face his sexual identity. This exploration continued as he entered college and started the serious work of sorting through years of repressed anger to separate from his father’s control and condemnation. My Thinning Years is an inspiring story of courage, creativity, and the will to live--and of recreating the definition of family to include friends, relatives, and teachers who support you in realizing your true self.In 1996, Jon wrote a song dreaming about finding a love and being able to live openly and freely. The song lyrics are in My Thinning Years and he recorded the song this summer with Broadway great Miguel Cervantes for others to hear. The song is available on iTunes and Spotify and profits will benefit The Trevor Project.

Book Cass Turnbull s Guide to Pruning 2nd Edition

Download or read book Cass Turnbull s Guide to Pruning 2nd Edition written by Cass Turnbull and published by Sasquatch Books. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing about pruning is obvious; in fact, most of it is downright counterintuitive, says expert Cass Turnbull. This second edition of her definitive illustrated guide adds 40 percent new material, with more coverage of different kinds of trees, shrubs, and ground covers and how to prune them for health and aesthetics. The book is organized around the most common types of plants found in Northwest gardens: evergreen and deciduous shrubs; bamboos and tea roses; rhododendrons, camellia and other tree-like shrubs; hedge plants like boxwood and heather; clematis, wisteria and all those vines; and detailed information on trees by species from dogwoods to weeping cherries. In her trademark witty style, Turnbull also addresses tools, landscape renovation, and design errors. Included too are her amusing Ten Commandments for gardeners, which feature such treasures as "Thou shalt not weed-whip the trunk of thy tree, nor bash it with thine mower, nor leave anything tied on thy tree or the branches of thy tree, as is done in the land of the philistines."

Book Philosophy in Ireland

  • Author : Susan Gottlöber
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2019-08-29
  • ISBN : 1527539172

Download or read book Philosophy in Ireland written by Susan Gottlöber and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents an overview of various aspects of the quite diverse philosophical developments that have taken place in Ireland, both past and present. With contributions by some of the leading thinkers in their field, this book is based, although not exclusively so, on papers given at a conference held at Maynooth University, Ireland, in 2012 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Irish Philosophical Society. Rather than treating philosophy in Ireland in a systematic and comprehensive way, the contributions give the reader a glimpse of the state of philosophy in Ireland today. They show that, from the beginning, and throughout the centuries, the philosophical tradition in Ireland has been characterised by dialogue. This dialogical aspect of Irish philosophising remains alive today. The book demonstrates how this engagement encompasses the past as interlocutor, as well as interactions with the philosophical debates that take place outside of Ireland, both on the continent and within the Anglo-American tradition. The volume puts forward a strong argument that the future of philosophy in Ireland should not move towards an ever-greater specialisation, thereby resulting in the isolation and impoverishment of individual philosophical traditions. Rather, it argues that the different traditions should remain, and should engage in dialogue with each other, with their philosophical and intellectual past, and stay steadfastly connected with the society around them.
