Book The Quest for Conscience and the Birth of the Mind

Download or read book The Quest for Conscience and the Birth of the Mind written by Annie Reiner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new perspective on conscience as an as yet unrealized human potential, but a potential toward which human beings are naturally driven. A distinction is made between a "mature" or "healthy" conscience - a "conscience capable of maturation" - and the classical notion of the superego; it also postulates that the two may represent two separate lines of development. Conscience is seen to be inseparable from consciousness; the development of a mature conscience is seen to have its foundation in the development of a true or authentic self, while the classical notion of the superego is viewed as an often pathological manifestation of this natural mental potential. Theological ideas are relevant to any discussion of morality, conscience and guilt. Freud's and Bion's perspectives on religion are closely examined, revealing fundamental differences in their views of the mind. The author incorporates the metaphysical perspective central to Bion's concept of "O" as fundamental to an understanding of the development of a healthy conscience.

Book Apostate No More Bazoodee A Grenadian Quest to Think Outside the Box

Download or read book Apostate No More Bazoodee A Grenadian Quest to Think Outside the Box written by Seon M. Lewis and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most (if not all) Grenadians have grown up hearing stories of la diablesse, lagahou and sookooyant. But have you ever wondered about the origin of these stories? This book just doesn't re-tell these stories. It traces their origins, and looks at them as being influential in helping shape our self-identity and our interpersonal relationship. In fact, this book examines and critiques aspects of the Grenadian sociocultural and sociopolitical culture that seek, in many ways, to minimize and suppress the individual's search for self-identity especially as he or she tries to pursue knowledge that appears to be outside the socially accepted. In doing so, this book follows the author's journey as he analyzes old ideas and engaged with new ones. Also central to this book is that it seeks to help the individual develop his or her moral and ethical awareness.

Book excerpt: A fascinating look at Artificial Intelligence, from its humble Cold War beginnings to the dazzling future that is just around the corner. When most of us think about Artificial Intelligence, our minds go straight to cyborgs, robots, and sci-fi thrillers where machines take over the world. But the truth is that Artificial Intelligence is already among us. It exists in our smartphones, fitness trackers, and refrigerators that tell us when the milk will expire. In some ways, the future people dreamed of at the World's Fair in the 1960s is already here. We're teaching our machines how to think like humans, and they're learning at an incredible rate. In Thinking Machines, technology journalist Luke Dormehl takes you through the history of AI and how it makes up the foundations of the machines that think for us today. Furthermore, Dormehl speculates on the incredible--and possibly terrifying--future that's much closer than many would imagine. This remarkable book will invite you to marvel at what now seems commonplace and to dream about a future in which the scope of humanity may need to broaden itself to include intelligent machines.

Book Karma Mind and Quest for Happiness

Download or read book Karma Mind and Quest for Happiness written by Susmit Kumar and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Karma, Mind, and Quest for Happiness, Dr. Susmit Kumar seeks to explain certain facts of Tantric philosophy, such as the constituent parts of the mind, the effect of mantra on the mind, and how karma may be scientifically defined and explained. Until recently, people considered units of time and distance in terms of 100-200 years and 100-200 miles; astronomers now measure time and distance in billions of years and trillions of miles. Even so, science can study the scientific laws of only 4 percent of the materials in the universe, as it cannot "see" the remaining 96 percent, referred to as "dark matter" and "dark energy." Great individuals-such as Christ, Buddha, Moses, Prophet Muhammad, and Krishna-knew something about the workings of the Universe that is not common knowledge; this is why we claim their actions to be miracles or religious dogma. Furthermore, during the last 10,000 years, many saints in Asia have explored the human mind and its relationship with the Infinite. Most of them did it after first having established the limitations of physical pleasure and intellectual knowledge. When they started to explore the functioning of their minds and how everything around them was created, they developed a theory called Tantra. In Karma, Mind, and Quest for Happiness, Dr. Kumar will explore how Tantra is free from the distorting influences of time and place.

Book Science as a Quest for Truth

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bengt Kristensson Uggla
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2024-01-05
  • ISBN : 1527534464
  • Pages : 367 pages

Download or read book Science as a Quest for Truth written by Bengt Kristensson Uggla and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-05 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a unified theory of science by challenging some of the lingering myths and anachronisms associated with our understanding of what it means to be scientific. The book presents a new science narrative focused on the dialectics of discovering/inventing new worlds in an age of hermeneutics, and as an alternative to the prevailing view of the history of science as, largely, a confrontation between science and religion. It argues that the development of modern science is, in a complex way, intertwined with the history of the university, a knowledge institution that throughout the centuries has repeatedly managed to reinvent itself—so successfully, indeed, that it has paradoxically led to a fundamental crisis of identity today. The book suggests that, in order to recognize science as a quest for truth in a globalizing world of cognitive horizontalization, we need to transcend the false alternatives of objectivistic certitude (possessing “the Truth”) and relativistic resignation (“post-truth”) by means of a new focus on collegial practices.

Download or read book The Mystic Quest written by David S. Ariel and published by Jason Aronson, Incorporated. This book was released on 1977-07-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mystic Quest explains the major ideas and concepts of Jewish mystical thought in a way that the general reader can clearly understand. Drawing upon his own extensive research as well as on the growing body of scholarly material on the subject, Dr. David Ariel, president of the Cleveland College of Jewish Studies, presents the extremely difficult and complex elements of Jewish mysticism in language that makes it accessible to the layperson. Jewish mysticism is as old as the Bible itself. It is a rich and subtle web of secret teachings and practices that has been part of Judaism since antiquity and has sought to keep the original spark of religious experience alive through the centuries. It is the relatively unknown, esoteric dimension of Judaism that has nourished a deep spiritual power within a tradition of law, ritual, and observance. A central element in Judaism, the "mystic quest" has shaped both Judaism and Jews throughout history, generating the kabbalistic tradition and Hasidism, which continue to thrive today, As Ariel says, "This book is concerned primarily with the development and meaning of the Kabbalah, the principal tradition of mystical Jewish thought." The Mystic Quest begins with an examination of the variety of phenomena known in different cultures as "mysticism." Ariel then located the Jewish mystical tradition within the context of Jewish history and traces its evolution throughout the ages. Jewish mystical theories about the hidden and revealed God, the feminine aspects of divinity, the mystical Torah, and the concepts of the soul and human destiny are then explored in detail. Finally, the author considers Hasidism and modern Jewish mystical thought, discussing the role of mysticism in contemporary Judaism. In language accessible to the beginner, yet sophisticated enough to captivate the advanced student, The Mystic Quest fills an important gap in our knowledge of mysticism by bringing a comprehensive and fresh understanding of the subject to a new generation of
