Book excerpt: Two for the Dough is irresistible fun and powerful suspense entertainment from an acclaimed author who is already a national star. It’s Stephanie Plum, New Jersey’s “fugitive apprehension” agent (a.k.a. bounty hunter), introduced to the world by Janet Evanovich in the award-winning and bestselling novel One for the Money. Now Stephanie's back, armed with attitude—not to mention stun guns, defense sprays, killer flashlights, and her trusty .38, Stephanie is after a new bail jumper, Kenny Mancuso, a boy from Trenton’s burg. He’s fresh out of the army, suspiciously wealthy, and he’s just shot his best friend. With her bounty hunter pal Ranger stepping in occasionally to advise her, Stephanie staggers knee-deep in corpses and caskets as she traipses through back streets, dark alleys, and funeral parlors. And nobody knows funeral parlors better than Stephanie's irrepressible Grandma Mazur, a lady whose favorite pastime is grabbing a front-row seat at a neighborhood wake. So, Stephanie uses Grandma as a cover to follow leads, but loses control when Grandma warms to the action, packing a cool pistol. Much to the family’s chagrin, Stephanie and Granny may soon have the elusive Kenny in their sights. Fast-talking, slow-handed vice cop Joe Morelli joins in the case, since the prey happens to be his young cousin. And if the assignment calls for an automobile stakeout for two with the woman who puts his libido in overdrive, Morelli’s not one to object. Low on expertise but learning fast, high on resilience, and despite the help she gets from friends and relatives, Stephanie eventually must face the danger alone when embalmed body parts begin to arrive on her doorstep and she’s targeted for a nasty death by the most loathsome adversary she's ever encountered. Another case like this and she'll be a real pro.

Download or read book Heroes on the Hook written by John McDermott and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-08 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wounded soldier winced as he groveled in the wet and muddy shell hole trying to find more cover. The explosion of artillery shells made his ears ring and fear forced him into a fetal position. Each time he moved, pain from the shrapnel imbedded in his leg, burned its way through his mind and body. The continuous bombardment sent screaming shells from the Germans answered by Allied artillery followed by earth shaking convulsions that muffled the cries of men shouting for help-praying at the top of their lungs as they died. Sergeant Handson conquered his pain and fear as he looked around for his men. They were piled like cordwood from the bottom of his shell-hole to the top. Blood and urine mingled with warm brain matter trickled down from the bodies above him. It was too much-he lapsed into unconsciousness. This terrible memory would haunt him for the rest of his life. Many nights found him weeping in his bathroom, shaking with fear-shuddering, as imaginary body fluids flowed over his skin. He never told anyone, he preferred to pray his way from their horror.

Book Impact

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gerrit L. Verschuur
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1997-12-18
  • ISBN : 0195353277
  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book Impact written by Gerrit L. Verschuur and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-12-18 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most scientists now agree that some sixty-five million years ago, an immense comet slammed into the Yucatan, detonating a blast twenty million times more powerful than the largest hydrogen bomb, punching a hole ten miles deep in the earth. Trillions of tons of rock were vaporized and launched into the atmosphere. For a thousand miles in all directions, vegetation burst into flames. There were tremendous blast waves, searing winds, showers of molten matter from the sky, earthquakes, and a terrible darkness that cut out sunlight for a year, enveloping the planet in freezing cold. Thousands of species of plants and animals were obliterated, including the dinosaurs, some of which may have become extinct in a matter of hours. In Impact, Gerrit L. Verschuur offers an eye-opening look at such catastrophic collisions with our planet. Perhaps more important, he paints an unsettling portrait of the possibility of new collisions with earth, exploring potential threats to our planet and describing what scientists are doing right now to prepare for this awful possibility. Every day something from space hits our planet, Verschuur reveals. In fact, about 10,000 tons of space debris fall to earth every year, mostly in meteoric form. The author recounts spectacular recent sightings, such as over Allende, Mexico, in 1969, when a fireball showered the region with four tons of fragments, and the twenty-six pound meteor that went through the trunk of a red Chevy Malibu in Peekskill, New York, in 1992 (the meteor was subsequently sold for $69,000 and the car itself fetched $10,000). But meteors are not the greatest threat to life on earth, the author points out. The major threats are asteroids and comets. The reader discovers that astronomers have located some 350 NEAs ("Near Earth Asteroids"), objects whose orbits cross the orbit of the earth, the largest of which are 1627 Ivar (6 kilometers wide) and 1580 Betula (8 kilometers). Indeed, we learn that in 1989, a bus-sized asteroid called Asclepius missed our planet by 650,000 kilometers (a mere six hours), and that in 1994 a sixty-foot object passed within 180,000 kilometers, half the distance to the moon. Comets, of course, are even more deadly. Verschuur provides a gripping description of the small comet that exploded in the atmosphere above the Tunguska River valley in Siberia, in 1908, in a blinding flash visible for several thousand miles (every tree within sixty miles of ground zero was flattened). He discusses Comet Swift-Tuttle--"the most dangerous object in the solar system"--a comet far larger than the one that killed off the dinosaurs, due to pass through earth's orbit in the year 2126. And he recounts the collision of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter in 1994, as some twenty cometary fragments struck the giant planet over the course of several days, casting titanic plumes out into space (when Fragment G hit, it outshone the planet on the infrared band, and left a dark area at the impact site larger than the Great Red Spot). In addition, the author describes the efforts of Spacewatch and other groups to locate NEAs, and evaluates the idea that comet and asteroid impacts have been an underrated factor in the evolution of life on earth. Astronomer Herbert Howe observed in 1897: "While there are not definite data to reason from, it is believed that an encounter with the nucleus of one of the largest comets is not to be desired." As Verschuur shows in Impact, we now have substantial data with which to support Howe's tongue-in-cheek remark. Whether discussing monumental tsunamis or the innumerable comets in the Solar System, this book will enthrall anyone curious about outer space, remarkable natural phenomenon, or the future of the planet earth.

Book Beneath the Black Palms

Download or read book Beneath the Black Palms written by Nolan Knight and published by Down & Out Books. This book was released on 2022-09-26 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beneath the Black Palms lurks the other side of living. Los Angeles—the siren, the beast—is the central antagonist within these eleven masterful, stylistically-diverse short stories. Nolan Knight maneuvers the City to destroy with open arms, its warm torments ushered for lonesome dreamers, outcasts, squares, con men and have-nots. A couple on the run fouls-up by taking refuge in a Mid-City roach motel; a gambler scrambles to save his life through a gauntlet of loan sharks; a young gang member’s dream of becoming a famous T.V. chef are dashed by turf warfare; these sordid tales and more await. Come for the sunshine, stay for the dread. No one is spared Beneath the Black Palms, the most unforgettable short story collection in recent years. Praise for Nolan Knight: “Knight’s slangy prose is a perfect fit for characters whose dreams die slowly or explosively.” —Publishers Weekly “The Neon Lights Are Veins is a dope-fueled gutter-punk odyssey through a gaudy nightmare version of Los Angeles. With echoes of James Ellroy and Nathanael West, Knight carves out his own bit of L.A. crime-writing turf in this impressive debut.” —Richard Lange, author of Rovers, Dead Boys, This Wicked World, Angel Baby, Sweet Nothing and The Smack “Nolan Knight is at the forefront of Hard-Ass-Noir. He’s the mad hatter of words and dark moody storytelling. He’s a creative crime-pugilist!” —Frank Bill, author of Crimes in Southern Indiana, Donnybrook and The Savage “Nolan Knight has written a dark, dirty and entertaining sewer ride through the neon-lit streets of Los Angeles. Imagine Nathanael West and Darby Crash writing a twenty-first century noir and you’ve got The Neon Lights Are Veins. Highly recommended.” —Jim Ruland, author of Corporate Rock Sucks: The Rise and Fall of SST Records, Forest of Fortune, My Damage: The Story of a Punk Rock Survivor and Do What You Want: The Story of Bad Religion “High action. Very fast paced. A great read. Highly Recommended.” —S.W. Lauden, author of Bad Citizen Corporation, Grizzly Season and Hang Time “Nolan Knight’s The Neon Lights Are Veins is unlike anything I’ve read before (and that’s saying something!). The novel’s story is a fast-paced mystery and caper, dragging the reader through the underbelly of the Los Angeles night, but most impressive is Knight’s style: in your face and no-holds-barred.” —Steph Post, author of A Tree Born Crooked, Lightwood, Holding Smoke and Miraculum “Hardboiled as all get out—no noir devotee will want to.” —Barry Gifford “Nolan Knight is at the forefront of Hard-Ass-Noir. He’s the mad hatter of words and dark moody storytelling. He’s a creative crime-pugilist!” —Frank Bill, author of Crimes in Southern Indiana, Donnybrook and The Savage “Amazing, beautiful, heartbreaking work.” —Allison Anders, writer/director of Gas Food Lodging, Border Radio, Mi Vida Loca and Grace of My Heart
