Book excerpt: No horror film is truly mainstream, David Cronenberg has said, and it is for this reason that even the lowliest of them may be worth consideration. In this tenth anniversary revised and updated edition of They Came From Within, Caelum Vatnsdal adjusts the focus in Canadian horror films, and unwinds the history of this neglected genre to learn "why we fear what we fear and how it came to be that way." From the early Canadian infiltration of Hollywood in the thirties, to the flowering of Canuck horror films in the sixties and seventies, to the surreal products of the "tax-shelter" eighties and beyond, Vatnsdal shows how the Canadian horror film industry has, unwittingly or not, created a complex social, economic, and political portrait of a nation. Engagingly written, extensively researched, and lavishly illustrated with rare stills and poster art, They Came From Within is an invaluable addition of Canadian film criticism.

Download or read book It Came from Within written by Andy Stanley and published by Multnomah. This book was released on 2009-08-26 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where Did THAT Come From? You know that dreaded, sinking, I-can’t-believe-I-said-that-out-loud feeling? It’s a disconnect between your attitude and your actions. Or is it? “For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks,” states Matthew 12:33. Scary, but true: The words you “accidentally” speak and the actions you later regret are actually in keeping with what’s hiding in your heart. Andy Stanley’s life-changing message examines four conditions at the root of sour attitudes, hurting relationships, and regretful actions: guilt, anger, greed, and jealousy. This book will help you disclose the true state of your heart and turn what’s terrifying into what’s terrific. You Can’t Run from What Lurks Within More frightening than Frankenstein. More seductive than a vampire’s kiss. More destructive than alien invaders from another planet. They will numb your soul, steal your life, and threaten your most treasured relationships. Who are these creatures? Where do they come from? At the fall of mankind they were unleashed on the world, wreaking havoc and sending countless thousands fleeing from their homes. And their lair is found in the last place anyone wants to look – the mysterious depths of the human heart. You think nobody knows the real you. You think your secret is safe. Beware! These forces gain strength from darkness. And left to their own, they will grow in power and influence, like a lab experiment gone terribly wrong. But these monsters have a weakness. They can be defeated. You can escape their clutches and be forever free of their influence. Learn the truth–before it’s too late! Are you afraid to look inside? Suddenly a young wife files for divorce. Suddenly a college student’s grades drop and his attitude changes. Suddenly a man’s harmless pastime becomes a destructive habit. Each looks for someone else to blame. But the real enemy lurks within. Each of these people is a victim, but not in the way they might think. An invader, a deadly parasite, has wrapped its powerful, controlling tentacles around each victim’s heart. The heart. Not the organ that pumps blood through our veins, but that invisible, intangible place where we experience love, compassion, contempt, and jealousy. Like the physical heart, this other heart is highly susceptible to attack–by four nightmarish foes, in particular. Four malevolent forces that, left unchallenged, have the power to lay waste our homes, trample our careers, and leave our relationships in fiery ruins. But hope is not lost. There is a way to fight back. In this smart, revealing book, you will be introduced to these four invaders of the heart. More importantly, you will be given four weapons designed specifically to destroy them. Writing with deep honesty and gentle humor, Andy Stanley shows how you can overcome these monsters and save your world, starting now. Story Behind the Book Andy Stanley is the senior pastor of three North Point Ministries campuses with a cumulative congregation of more than twenty thousand. In his role he sees a tremendous number of people struggling with the same basic issues. This book is based on a message he spoke to his congregation to help them better understand, work through, and move beyond the problems caused by a hurting heart. From the Hardcover edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strength and unwavering faith conquer the most brutal circumstances in this masterful biography of survival against Nazi brutality. In Strength from Within, Amrom Gottesman explores the horrific story of his father, Leibish, enduring the ravages of the ghetto before he is transported to several concentration camps during World War II. While his family perishes at Auschwitz, Leibish survives and is tortured to the point of nearly dying too. Still, his journey to liberation is marked with divine encounters with good people, such as fifty-year-old fellow prisoner Mr. Springer, who shows him kindness despite the harsh reality of Dachau. Leibish's only living brother, Kalmen, has a separate experience during the Holocaust that eventually brings them together-older and much changed. At the height of World War II, the Gottesman family is transported to Auschwitz concentration camp, where most of them perish. Surviving this tragedy is a teenaged Leibish, who is moved to Dachau. There, he meets a comrade in Mr. Springer as they suffered brutal conditions. Leibish loses contact with his only living brother, Kalmen, until after the war-when both men have changed in unimaginable ways. This biography highlights Leibish's grueling train ride south when the Nazis had to abandon Dachau. The endeavor put them right in the crossfire of the Americans and Germans. With safety diminishing at every turn, how did Leibish survive with no family left? This detailed portrayal of one man's survival under Nazi brutality is a testament to the power of the human spirit. With superhuman strength and unwavering faith, Leibish clung to life and morality, rising above the physical and moral torture during the hellish war years. In spite of his personal suffering, Leibish extended himself to others with unbelievable sacrifice. It was his inner reserves of strength along with miraculous Divine intervention that sustained him and his only surviving brother, with whom he was reunited after the Holocaust. Strength from Within highlights the evils of humanity and the triumph of hope, even when surviving seems impossible This true story poignantly details how the human spirit survives war and can even thrive afterward when normal life settles in again. It also highlights how far hope can carry you, even on battered wings.
Download or read book Go Back to where You Came from written by Sasha Polakow-Suransky and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the new far right poses a graver threat to liberal democracy than jihadists or mass migration? From Europe to the United States and beyond, opportunistic politicians have exploited economic crisis, terrorist attacks and an influx of refugees to bring hateful and reactionary views from the margins of political discourse into the corridors of power. This climate has already helped propel Donald Trump to the White House, pushed Britain out of the European Union, and put Marine Le Pen within striking distance of the French presidency. Sasha Polakow-Suransky's on-the-ground reportage and interviews with the rising stars of the new right tell the story of how we got here, tracing the global rise of anti-immigration politics and the ruthlessly effective rebranding of Europe's new far right as defenders of Western liberal values. Go Back to Where You Came From is an indispensable account of why xenophobia went mainstream in countries known historically as defenders of human rights and models of tolerance.
Download or read book M S P C written by Hector A. Cruz and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-07-01 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact of the matter is that God nested. What does that mean? Well, just like every female of the species prepares a place, or a nest if you will, to receive their offspring, so did God create a place to receive his most precious creation, man. It is believed and understood that females got this instinct to nest when they were formed. God first created his heaven (his abode) and everything within it--the angels and the mighty host of it all. The universe was next, including the sphere which we call planet earth. It was on this platform, planet earth, where God set the planification for the next level according to his creation. This small blue planet was chosen for such a task. The comparable form of understanding this would be the experience and conformity of our everyday life. The example: a man and a woman who are married, living in their own home, and expecting their offspring (baby). They would choose one of the rooms to be the nursery. This room would be cleaned, painted, and prepared. Furnishing it with things such as the crib, changing table, toys would be added, etc. All this, if not more, to welcome their precious one. The simple way to see the whole picture of our existence, including the nesting part, would be the country where this couple's house resides would represent the heaven where God is. The house itself would represent the universe where the galaxies exist. Planet earth would represent the room (nursery) of the house. All the renovations and accessories in the room would be Genesis chapters 1 and 2.
Download or read book The Posner Files written by Gerald Posner and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Definitive accounts of JFK’s and Martin Luther King’s assassinations by a Pulitzer Prize finalist and New York Times–bestselling author. Case Closed: A Pulitzer Prize finalist and New York Times bestseller, Case Closed is a vivid and straightforward account that stands as one of the most authoritative books on the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Drawing from official sources and dozens of interviews, filled with powerful historical detail, and including an updated comment for the fiftieth anniversary, Posner’s “utterly convincing” book lays to rest all of the convoluted conspiracy theories—concerning the mafia, a second shooter, and the CIA—that have obscured what really happened in Dealey Plaza on November 22, 1963 (Chicago Tribune). “By far the most lucid and compelling account . . . of what probably did happen in Dallas—and what almost certainly did not.” —The New York Times Book Review Killing the Dream: On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr., was killed in Memphis, Tennessee, by a single assassin’s bullet. James Earl Ray was seen fleeing from a rooming house that overlooked the hotel balcony where King was shot. An international manhunt ended two months later with Ray’s capture. Though Ray initially pled guilty, he quickly recanted and for the rest of his life insisted he was an unwitting pawn in a grand conspiracy. In Killing the Dream, expert investigative reporter Gerald Posner cuts through phony witnesses, false claims, and a web of misinformation to put Ray’s conspiracy theory to rest and disclose what really happened the day King was murdered. “A superb book: a model of investigation, meticulous in its discovery and presentation of evidence, unbiased in its exploration of every claim. And it is a wonderfully readable book, as gripping as a first-class detective story.” —The New York Times
Download or read book Defining Cult Movies written by Mark Jancovich and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2003-11-08 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection concentrates on the analysis of cult movies, how they are defined, who defines them and the cultural politics of these definitions. The definition of the cult movie relies on a sense of its distinction from the "mainstream" or "ordinary." This also raises issues about the perception of it as an oppositional form of cinema, and of its strained relationships to processes of institutionalization and classification. In other words, cult movie fandom has often presented itself as being in opposition to the academy, commercial film industries and the media more generally, but has been far more dependent on these forms than it has usually been willing to admit. The international roster of essayists range over the full and entertaining gamut of cult films from Dario Argento, Spanish horror and Peter Jackson's New Zealand gorefests to sexploitation, kung fu and sci-fi flicks.
