Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Field instruction has traditionally been at the core of the geoscience curriculum. The field experience has been integral to the professional development of future geoscientists, and is particularly important as it applies to student understanding of spatial, temporal, and complex relations in the Earth system. As important as field experiences have been to geosciences education and the training of geoscientists, the current situation calls for discipline-wide reflection of the role of field experiences in the geoscience curriculum in light of practical and logistical challenges, evolution in employment opportunities for geoscientists, and changing emphases in the geoscience curriculum. This volume seeks to broaden participation in field instruction by showcasing diverse approaches to teaching in the field across the many geo-disciplines encompassed by GSA."--books.google.

Download or read book Tracks and Shadows written by Harry W. Greene and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intellectually rich, intensely personal, and beautifully written, Tracks and Shadows is both an absorbing autobiography of a celebrated field biologist and a celebration of beauty in nature. Harry W. Greene, award-winning author of Snakes: The Evolution of Mystery in Nature, delves into the poetry of field biology, showing how nature eases our existential quandaries. More than a memoir, the book is about the wonder of snakes, the beauty of studying and understanding natural history, and the importance of sharing the love of nature with humanity. Greene begins with his youthful curiosity about the natural world and moves to his stints as a mortician's assistant, ambulance driver, and army medic. In detailing his academic career, he describes how his work led him to believe that nature’s most profound lessons lurk in hard-won details. He discusses the nuts and bolts of field research and teaching, contrasts the emotional impact of hot dry habitats with hot wet ones, imparts the basics of snake biology, and introduces the great explorers Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. He reflects on friendship and happiness, tackles notions like anthropomorphism and wilderness, and argues that organisms remain the core of biology, science plays key roles in conservation, and natural history offers an enlightened form of contentment.

Book excerpt: Can a Depression Era Midwestern farm boy attending a one-room country school find success in the world unfolding around him? This autobiography addresses that general question by answering several queries into major events of these ninety years. What was learning like in a one-room country school of the late 1930s and early 1940s? How fares the first in his family to attend high school and then continue to earn bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees? How did experiences in military service shape the development of this individual? At two major land grant universities, how were issues of integration, war protest, cultural advancement, and academic expansion addressed. In retirement, what adventures lay in extensive travel and enrichment teaching? The answers to these questions are found in annual budget books dating to marriage in 1952, letters from occupation Germany, academic year calendars, family photo collections, Christmas newsletters, and the memories that these stir.

Download or read book History of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces written by Theodore W. Bauer and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before World War II the Army Industrial College, with its emphasis on the economic aspects of national security was a unique military college with no counterpart in other nations. World War II brought new recognition of the important role of the Industrial College. When the College was reconstituted as a joint-service institution after World War II, graduate level instruction was provided in economic mobilization, but emphasis soon shifted to the management of defense resources. The Industrial College of the Armed Forces was designated by its charter as an institution at the highest educational level in the Defense Establishment. The Alumni Association of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces undertook the preparation of this history to meet a long-recognized need for a comprehensive account of the development of the College. This project is especially timely in view of the 60-year anniversary of the Industrial College on 25 February 1984. The present study emphasizes changes in mission and the evolution of the instructional program. Extensive use was made of the annual reports submitted by the Commandants of the Industrial College to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Book excerpt: Searching for Spirituality in Higher Education brings together eclectic points of view on spirituality, drawing upon various theoretical perspectives to frame a discussion of spirituality in higher education. Following a comprehensive review of the current literature on spirituality, chapters examine the relationship between religion and spirituality and explore related legal issues. Subsequent theory chapters make no unified claims about the basis of spirituality, reflecting the speculative nature of an ethereal subject. The final section contains rich examples that explore ways to integrate spirituality in several academic disciplines as well as in student affairs. In its entirety, the book encompasses a comprehensive review of the salient issues related to spirituality in higher education. The volume will be useful in courses on religion, nursing, business, and the humanities.
